Feel lousy w/ sinus infection & cough. Could finish last part of Mme Bovary, reread some Maigrets, start either Sonia & Sunny or Flesh, or browse through the new Norman Lewis anthology. Thoughts?

Even if no one else appreciates the genuineness of my grin this morning. #hardle Hardle 1/9/2026 | 3/10 🟨🟨⬛🟨🟨 4️⃣0️⃣ 🟩🟩🟨🟨⬛ 2️⃣2️⃣ 🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩 0️⃣5️⃣ Play #hardle on hardle.org

Annual village fireworks almost directly overhead last night. Created little cave in bathroom with musical distractions to ride out with dogs. This is how to check a that 14.5 yo dog’s hearing.

Thanks. Think I spied a Rachel Ingalls in back of shelf I couldn’t reach. Will go check love some Trevor, some not. But short stories a good idea. Did pull Nabakov stories, which I’d also forgotten I’d had.

Great new issue. Have just ordered new Stein bio from @blackwells.bsky.social, along with the newJess Kidd, some Donal Ryan, Fortnight in Sept, and the autobiography of Alice B (which I vividly remember reading in my first apartment, 40+ years ago).

On uptown B train. After guy with music on speaker left, violinist started playing—in space of 3 minutes—Hava Nagila, Lara’s Theme from Dr Zhivago, and the theme music from The Godfather. It’s quiet now.

Got an email at 8:56 am EDT that Pinckney on Hardwick and the Helen Garner diaries have been “despatched”!

As if things aren’t bad enough. Let me play around and see if I can get an order through. A large order. And if they accept my pre-orders then they have to ship them right?

Abashed that I’m not familiar with a lot of these authors, but am always up for a book sale. Suggestions welcome.

An amazing read.

The Atlantic@theatlantic.com

American war planning usually takes place in highly secure facilities. But the Trump administration planned its strikes on the Houthis using a group chat—and accidentally included The Atlantic’s editor in chief, Jeffrey Goldberg. theatln.tc/IuULQFiY

Am up to about p. 200 in “Lies and Sorcery” and while I enjoyed Part 1, am not sure I can managed another 600 pages of Cousin Eduardo, even if/when he becomes a marginal character. #nyrbwomen25

A great story about remembering and then trying to find stories read in childhood and adolescence. (Mine was for something called “Momento Mori,” eventually tracked down in anthology of stories from Seventeen Magazine.)
