Unfortunately for this particular lizard, the bird didn't grab him by the tail. Most lizard families can drop segments of their tails, allowing them to escape a predator. This process is called caudal autonomy.

Our unlucky King of the Rock was swiftly replaced by a new male eager to take over his territory. I hope you #FoundThatLizard! Let me know in the comments! #lizard #science #game #nikon #wildlife #publiclands

At one site, we had a large male Yarrow's spiny lizard, Sceloporus jarrovii, the lizard you're looking for. This particular lizard liked to do push-ups on a large rock, making sure all other males could see him & be afraid. He also wanted the females to see him as the strong potential mate he was.

My advisor would see him year after year, atop the rock, posturing for all to see. One day, as this lizard was doing his push-ups, a bird swooped down and gobbled him up.

I just spent the last hour with a photo set where I knew there was a lizard but I didn’t know where the lizard was. I finally found it and it isn’t even a good photo 😭😭😭

I was at Olive Garden with my bestie, her daughter, and girlfriend. Daughter is eating her second bowl of Zuppa Toscana when she suddenly exclaims “I’m gonna be peeing a lot tonight!” Her mom is like “from all the soup??” “Yup😎” she says proudly 🤣😂🤣😂🤣

I also wanted to say thank you for helping me celebrate the scholarship awardees! Even though we are not doing an award this year, I will start fundraising soon for next year.

If you know of an organization or if you work for a company that donates to this kind of initiative, please reach out! Thanks again 🦎💜 #scholarship #herpetology #science #access

I’m so glad I finally got all those scholarship posts out! They been weighin on me something heavy 😮‍💨 I’m also excited to building a fundraising plan for next year. I hope to give out at least 5 awards. These small grants have big impacts on student’s careers!

Please help me in congratulating our final #FindThatLizard Scholarship Awardee Emilia Rodríguez. She is a Biotechnology undergraduate student from Ecuador, one of the most biodiverse countries in the world.

Emilia is also interested in toxinology and the study of snake venoms, particularly in the context of antivenom development and its importance for public health in Ecuador.

She hopes to continue building bridges between biotechnology and herpetology, contributing to conservation and One Health perspective in her country. #science #research #onehealth #herpetology

Please help me in congratulating our final #FindThatLizard Scholarship Awardee Emilia Rodríguez. She is a Biotechnology undergraduate student from Ecuador, one of the most biodiverse countries in the world.

She is currently an intern at the Animal Biotechnology Laboratory at Universidad de las Fuerzas Armadas ESPE and in the Amphibian & Reptile Management Area at Fundación Herpetológica Gustavo Orcés – Vivarium de Quito, the only NGO in Ecuador dedicated exclusively to reptile & amphibian conservation.

At the Vivarium, she provides daily care, feeding, monitoring, and handling for individuals rescued from illegal wildlife trafficking, witnessing the physiological and behavioral impacts of this trade on herpetofauna.

She is a graduate of the Autonomous University of Querétaro, Mexico, where she is currently pursuing a master’s degree in biological sciences. She has previously worked on ecological aspects of herpetofauna, such as the diet of lizards and axolotls.

Her master’s project focuses on studying the trophic ecology of an anuran community in the Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve, in the state of Querétaro. She is interested in making science available for everyone, especially children. Her favorite hobbies are reading and scientific illustration.

Around me in Central Ohio, we've been told that large corporate data centers are built on "low quality" land but around here, that "low quality" land is habitat for my beloved Grasshopper Sparrows, a species that has already declined 90%+ in the state making some stickers about that

When a child is told to stay away from a snake because it will bite them, or a toad because it will give them warts, they translate that as “Snakes and toads are bad!” when they’re not.

Maddy used her scholarship to attend the Junior Master Herpetologist Program (offered by The Amphibian Foundation). Taking her one step closer to her dream of becoming a herpetologist.

When she was in fifth grade, her art teacher shared a video of juvenile ball pythons pipping, and this was the start of her snake craze. After some research, she learned she could have A WHOLE JOB with reptiles.

She wants to be a herpetologist to inspire other young kids to follow their dreams, and teach people that reptiles (and amphibians) are not cold-blooded monsters. They are like humans in many ways, and it's good to teach this young.

Can you #FindThatLizard ? Last weekend's Lizard Art Walk was soooo much fun! During the event, I take folks on a short hike, and then we sculpt lizards out of clay. We talk about the different lizards we might see, the microhabitats they live in, and why they're important to their ecosystems. 🦎

It's so rewarding to share my knowledge about lizards with kids and adults alike. Growing up, I didn't know any scientists. I didn't have anyone to look up to. I want to fill a space that was missing for me so others can feel encouraged to follow their passions.

When I first started #FindThatLizard, it was a way to engage with people virtually because I lacked the resources and know-how to bring people together in person. (You’re searching for a western fence lizard)

It continues to be interesting to me just how many men, when presented with a clear and obvious answer to a test of morality and empathy, will nevertheless choose to "devil's advocate" themselves into a position of complete assholery

Puerto Rico is in a water crisis, as a US board slashes the island's social/infrastructure spend to protect corporate bondholders, and a developer tries to build a $2.5B private city on acres of untouched coastline. As one councilmember explains, much of this exploitation can be traced back to NYC.

After the hike we returned to the nature center where we made some lizards from clay! Our snacks and clay materials were generously provided through a grant by the Southwest Partners for Amphibian and Reptile Conservation. #lizard #parks #sciart #clay #nature

We had a blast! The morning was cool and cloudy so we worried that we might night see any lizards but right as we were about to hit the final stretch, a magnificent western fence lizard presented itself!
