I am hiring! There are probably about ~12 people in the world who meet exactly what I'm looking for, so we're open to considering teaching a 13th person to do what I do provided they already have a strong background in Bayesian statistics (non-negotiable) docs.google.com/document/d/1...

I appreciate that Claude is great at telling me shit that I already know 😮‍💨, but at least it confirms my strategy is correct

Once again, a subscription service called Democrats+ that, for a modest monthly fee, guarantees you won't be contacted by any Democratic campaign would be a wildly successful fundraising strategy.

Laurie Voss@seldo.com

And now back to my full time job, texting the word "stop" to every living Democrat.

I've always thought it was rather fucked up that you could tell someone, "Welcome to the campus, you need to do x and y by date z, and you'll have a relatively stable job for the rest of your life, provided you never fuck your students," and an alarming number will still proceed to fuck a student 🤦‍♂️

Micah@rincewind.run

every male college professor apparently needs to be given a starter pack here is your office, here is your chair, here is a buzzer that will shock you every time you think about fucking one of your students

This is one thing America has indisputably done better than the rest of the world (looking at you, Europe) over the last ~25 years. When I was a kid, restaurants still had smoking and non-smoking sections. Today, the idea of someone smoking inside a building is offensive to most people.

Fewer people smoke. Everyone’s healthier and all and that’s great but personally I love that I can eat a meal at a restaurant without feeling like I got strep throat.

Saw someone on LinkedIn today say all the "mildly autistic" people are going to leave tech because AI handles the tedious minutiae now, and the real work is system design 🤦‍♂️ Like, 8/10 of the competent software/systems architects I've ever known were definitely somewhere on the spectrum.

Simulated test data we're running through the system, but proof that it works and that my ggdist to plotly port functions correctly 😎

Spent the day building a Python Shiny application for a health and performance monitoring interface for the new system, and I have been painfully reminded that front-end development is such a pain in the ass

Yeah, I think this is a pretty solid career goal

Soxx@soxxoxsmox.bsky.social

God let nothing I do in my professional career ever be described as “defective at a level that’s challenging the imagination of many of the engineers studying the incident”

Okay, so the downside of having your personal GitHub account tied to your work team space is that when your CI runs start failing, you get a torrent of alert emails to every email linked to your GitHub account 🙄😬

I have to choose between ignoring these or getting out of bed and adding a new deploy key to the GitHub repo 😮‍💨

Some resume advice that runs contrary to the "focus on outcomes, not tools" advice: If you say you built something, but provide no details about it and have none of the skills I would expect someone who had built something like it to possess, I'm going to assume you're lying or did it very poorly

You don't need to include all the technical details (though you should be able to discuss them), but if you have a bullet point that says "built a dynamic personalization system that increased ARR by X%," that tells me absolutely nothing about your experience and qualifications.

No one outside of the SF Bay Area thinks or talks like this, and it's because those people live in a toxic bubble that constantly reinforces their own insanity. It's hard to reach any conclusion beyond the fact that nothing anyone who lives and works in SF Tech says should be taken seriously 🤷‍♂️

This is a researcher at Anthropic. Some of these people have lost their minds! What is mainlining Claude all day doing to them?

If I were building a company I would simply try harder to not build a product that results in the company being the defendant in multiple wrongful death lawsuits involving children

Practically speaking, even if it were technologically and financially possible to build a flying car, it still couldn't happen because people can barely drive on the ground. Imagine how terrible things would be with flying vehicles

This post is unavailable.

Like, it adds a whole new dimension to crash-test safety because now you're not just worried about the collision itself; you're worried about hitting the ground afterward.

OTOH, it is basically impossible to make the fatality rate of a mid-air collision anything less than ~99.9%, so crash safety isn't even a concern anymore, and 100% of your effort goes towards the harder problem of preventing crashes in the first place.

This isn't posted on any job board because doing so in 2026 gets you flooded with a million emails and messages from people who don't exist and from robots. If you're interested and think you might be a good fit, DM me.

I was doing some feasibility investigations to make sure my wild ideas will work in practice as I write up a data science roadmap for the next year, and I was unpleasantly reminded that the flow sensors I installed in my desktop have built-in acoustic alarms that trigger above a certain temp 🤦‍♂️

I've got Claude monitoring the hardware sensors, so after a run finishes, it waits for the GPU loop temperature to drop below 40°C before starting the next run.

Tubing is acrylic, so I could probably raise the alert threshold to ~55C, but that would require stopping what I've got running, booting into Windows, and tweaking settings in Aquasuite, which sounds like way too much effort.

Welp, I've canceled my return flight and called the whole thing off because they decided they didn't want to pay cash for a Marriott or Holiday Inn for 3 nights until they could book a room using points 🤷‍♂️

That last one was when I lost it and told her to send me proof she'd booked a hotel for me from Thursday to Sunday, or she was on her own. And now my wife is mad at me because my mother started crying and then left, and I'm at that point where I really don't give a shit.

1 week ago: Oh, and I have to take her five cats and a dog in the truck too, so we have to drive all 1,100 miles in one stretch. Today: Apparently none of the Holiday Inns within an hour of Baraboo, WI, can be booked with points Thursday - Sunday, so I'll have to sleep on the couch 2/n

I'm helping my mother move from Texas up to Wisconsin on Thursday, and I got some new noise-canceling headphones after being told we're gonna have her five cats in the F-150 with us. When Marshall says "Active Noise Canceling" man they mean it. You can't hear anything else with these things on.

A tidbit of wisdom that it took me many years to come to terms with: The goal of private-sector experimentation isn't learning. Learning is a nice-to-have, but meaningless on its own. The goal of private-sector experimentation is, first and foremost, to maximize revenue or minimize loss.

I paid $2199 for my RTX 3090 and $1500 for my RTX 3080 TI back in 2021, and I thought that was egregious. The cost of GPUs has been utterly fucked for years

Staking out my bet that if Texas goes purple, specifically with a Democratic governor or U.S. Senator, I will eat a cowboy hat

This is unequivocally correct, and let's be honest that we've reached the point where people who don't agree with this are traitors and ought to be treated as such regardless of party affiliation.

Patrick Wyman@patrickwyman.bsky.social

There is absolutely no viable path forward for this country that doesn’t hinge on extreme accountability for everyone involved in this administration. They’re going to whine about politicization and credulous media types will echo them, but the thing is, they’ve committed tons of obvious crimes!

Without accountability for blatant, well-documented lawlessness, the rule of law is dead. And if the rule of law is dead and buried, America has no future. Right now, it's on life support, and in 2026-2029, Democrats will be tasked with deciding whether to pull the plug or try to revive it.

After 6 fucking tries we finally got the damn thing installed. The holes in the template for the cabinet bottom that came in the box don't match the microwave.

Jordan Nafa@ajordannafa.com

The amount of fucking work involved in installing a new over-the-range convection microwave is obscene with a tile backsplash and a recessed cabinet bottom. Worst fucking appliance to try and install yourself.
