PSA!! Starting in a few minutes!

Cynthia Dunlop@cynthiadunlop.bsky.social

P99 CONF is this week! If you care about performance and low-latency engineering, there's probably at least a handful of talks that you'll want to catch. Speakers will be live on chat, ready for your questions/comments. It's free + virtual as always p99conf.io Hope to see you there!

Couldn't agree more, I've shared this opinion (and practiced it in my day-to-day) for some time now. Excellent framing about abstractions being *both* cheaper and more valuable with agents. 🙌🏼🙌🏼 (Pictured: from my idea board from when 'vibe coding' was the preferred term)

Matt Pocock {bot}@mattpocockuk-bot.eurosky.social

My hot take from chatting to @poteto is that we should use MORE abstractions in the AI age You can use them (combined with harsh lint rules) to reduce the design space available to the agent and constrain them only to good decisions. (1/3)

You can now mod Claude Code: - Change how it behaves - Customize the UI - Swap in your own features Write one with a few lines of TypeScript, or have Claude build it for you. Mods ship inside plugins, so you install them with /plugin in the CLI or desktop app. A few examples:

iddqd, or the hardest kind of unsafe Rust. My first post for the @oxide.computer blog! Goes deep into the pitfalls of unsafe Rust and how to reason about it. A lot of labor went into the post -- please have a read! oxide.computer/blog/iddqd-u...

I think I'm beginning to get @exe.dev Your ideas can go into shelley instead of into the bottomless "some day" idea pit. And tailor-made software for a userbase of you and/or your friends is a reality now. Supported by what feels like the best UX for VMs in the world. Beautiful! 🤌🏼🤌🏼

A report from this retreat is now available. It's a good, thoughtful summary of how AI is changing software engineering. It avoids breathless hype, but it doesn't bury the head in the sand either. www.thoughtworks.com/content/dam/...

Spent the last few days at a retreat on the future of software development, convened by @thoughtworks.com and @martinfowler.com. Excellent conversations and plenty of food for thought www.thoughtworks.com/en-us/about-...

Been thinking about this more and more lately, very well formulated by Marc

The cost of turning written business logic into code has dropped to zero. At best, near-zero. The cost of integrating services and libraries, the plumbing of the code world, has dropped to zero. At best, near-zero. What does that mean for the future? New blog post: brooker.co.za/blog/2026/02...

ya, if you're using LLMs and not using their force multiplier to raise the bar in terms of specifying/testing/verifying software you're doing it turbowrong

Ed@ed3d.net

“LLMs will make codebases into unmaintainable slop!” Ed: “I just had built a ts-morph custom linter for free that enforces business rules the type system cannot. It required zero of my attention and is patterned to add more whenever needed”

The OSTEP book club reading is starting in a week! A few updates. 1) Remzi Arpaci-Dusseau is in the book club! May not be super active because he's got a lot going on but he'll be there.

Video of the One Billion Row Challenge stream is now up at youtu.be/tCY7p6dVAGE! We got down to 1.2s without any external dependencies, and it was a fun journey down lots of performance rabbit holes (only some of which panned out 😅). It is over 10h, but hopefully the chapters in the video help!

Sometimes an interface is so ubiquitous that performance limitations inherent to its design are just accepted. This has been our experience with Parquet. We switched to Vortex which aligned much better with our needs and saw a 70% performance improvement across the board. Read more below 👇

#P99CONF is going live in just minutes! Here's a peek at the behind-the-scenes prep. If you haven't registered yet, hurry over to p99conf.io. It's free and virtual, so no excuses. 😅

At long last, @chris.blue and I have submitted the final manuscript of Designing Data-Intensive Applications, second edition, to the publisher. There is always more that could be improved but at some point we just have to call it done. Now it goes into production; probably shipping in ~4 months.
