There's no one whose book recommendations I enjoy more than Josh's!

3. You can get a book recommendations newsletter that's not on a Nazi friendly playform! My monthly recommends an old book, a new book, a forthcoming book, and a book I haven't finished. It's fun! The books are almost all small press & all weird!

So in a radical career pivot, after not being invited back to teach this semester, I have taken up events bartending. It's been a little over a week now, but so far...I kinda really like it? It's so refreshing to have a job that I leave and go home, and don't have to keep doing!

Ultimately, I'd like to move into a real cocktail bar. I enjoy craft cocktails, both at bars and at home, and love the creativity that goes into them. What I mostly get to make now is like...vodka sodas. Experience the absence of flavor! It's refreshing when someone orders an Old Fashioned.

Also, attendees at catered events don't tip much. Best I've done in a day is $50. But shoutout to the National Association of Gay Pilots for being the best tippers so far. It would help if we were allowed to put out a tip jar, but you know... *aesthetics.* 😡

It gets me out of the house many more hours than teaching did, but the majority of my work hours when teaching were at home. And it was so hard to set boundaries around when I was working and when I wasn't. Now, I'm either working or not, and it's a clean divide.

It's also very social work, which is good for me. I don't enjoy being alone much, as most of my work, both professional and personal, has required. Now, I'm home for my creative work, and out for my money work. It's a good separation. And the money work breaks up the solitude of the creative work.

Same, at the peak of my webcomics days, I had separate bookmarks folders for daily, weekly, and monthly comics, and would start my day by opening one of the folders and clicking "Open all bookmarks." A lot of comics really tailored their sites to support their comic, so there was cohesiveness.

I remember reading people's webcomic in sites they made. It was charming and cool to see so I have a whole bookmarks file and would open that every week. Maybe it wasn't perfect and reach was different, but I think the trap of modern social media is to stay there and taking the risk to lose it all.

The most absolutely massive flex from the state fair exhibit. This quilt is made of 40 years of prize ribbons from various categories at the New Mexico State Fair won by Carol St. Clair Johnson. She also won a prize for this quilt.

Separating the art from the artist with JK Rowling is like separating the girl scout cookies from the girl scouts. Your opinion on the cookies is irrelevant, their purpose is to fund scouting. Which is good! But if every cent funded hate groups, it'd be bad, even if the cookies were yummy as hell

So, with the new semester about to start, Emerson still hasn't told me whether or not I have a job this semester. I'm going to go ahead and assume I don't. And even if they asked me this late, I'd decline. My teaching career has come to an end. I'm okay with this. I saw it coming from last semster.

I got hired by a catering company for events bartending, so that's a starting place. I hope to find my way into a craft cocktail bar more longterm. I'm excited about this! I love making cocktails, especially when I get to be creative with it. And it'll be nice to have work that I can leave at work.

So anyway...that's some stuff going on. I had a good run as a teacher. 2008 -- 2026. I loved working with my students. Some of the relationships I built there continue on, and that's deeply gratifying. But moving on to something new feels good to.

(It's nothing personal--the incoming class is very small, and they're overstaffed, so they just left all the adjuncts hanging in limbo. I suspect the goal is for us to self-select out so they don't have to actually terminate us.)

I was open about what was happening with my students, and on the last day of the semester, I arrived to what turned out to be my surprise funeral! They all wrote eulogies for me, and it was about as heartwarming as you can imagine. Truly the best possible note to end on.

@greaterpodston.bluesky.social Wandering Brussels with my family. J: I want the liege waffle I had yesterday. B: I have no idea where that is from here. Me: If we wander the streets randomly enough, we'll find it. Let's try this way. (One block later) Me: There it is! (Dimitri is me.)
