Separating the art from the artist with JK Rowling is like separating the girl scout cookies from the girl scouts. Your opinion on the cookies is irrelevant, their purpose is to fund scouting. Which is good! But if every cent funded hate groups, it'd be bad, even if the cookies were yummy as hell

even though* the cookies are* yummy as hell Let's not used the contrapositive subjunctive in this clause, Ryan, we're talking about Thin Mints here.

And in any case, ‘separating the art from the artist’ is for literary analysis where you don’t try to guess what the author had in mind but rather what the text is saying to YOU. Which is probably what fans did to like this pro-status-quo pro-slavery series…

I'm sorry to say that around book 5, I thought that the series was really going to go somewhere positive. But no, the happy ending is that Harry becomes a cop and nothing ever changes. 🤮

Wait, what? I'm french, where scouting is a pretty abhorrent right-wing/christian/paramilitary indoctrination organisation, and somehow never questioned the possibility of it being different in the US. But how could they be different, they have the friggin' uniforms?!

In the US, both groups are focused on building both social and wilderness skills. However, the boy scouts lean slightly more conservative, while the girl scouts (completely separate organization) are more focused on equality and progressive values.

In particular, the boy scouts were heavily associated with the Mormon church for over a century, but in 2019 that partnership dissolved over the Boy Scouts of America organization allowing gay scouts/leaders, as well as trans youth and girls. So ~20% of the conservative participants left recently.

I like to mention pretending to remove milk from a coffee macchiato to illustrate this very point. ☕ Any sympathies I could have for the HP story in its own have long been displaced by the dark shadow cast by her author and the very real villain role she now portrays.

I am quite famously against book banning. But if a hate group somehow got the rights to my books and sold them as a fundraiser, I would urge you not to buy my books. That is not book banning, that is refusing to finance harm to others.
