Mark Sutcliffe wins Ottawa mayoralty with 44% of the vote in a 36% voter turnout election: clearly not a galvanizing election. Only Councillor upset was in Kanata South: Erin Coffin defeats incumbent Allen Hubley. Election takeaway: women form majority (13 to 12) on City Council.

Ottawa has a brutal track record of picking mayors that are committed to blocking smart, proven progress. Will the city’s voters finally end that trend today? Locals whose judgment I respect say @jleiper.bsky.social would make an excellent Mayor. Remember, turnout wins elections. #VOTE #Ottawa

Ottawa, today we get to vote for Jeff Leiper. We pay a lot in city taxes. In exchange, we have a right to expect a city that works. Jeff has the experience and vision to fix Ottawa. Transit. Housing. Street safety. Ending corporate welfare to Porsche dealerships and OSEG. Join me to vote for Jeff!

In #OttCity this should be key: it’s so hard to get a progressive voice elected we can’t risk splitting that voice. Let’s get behind @jleiper.bsky.social for mayor and make #OurBestOttawa

In the Vancouver election, many thought Pete Fry and the Greens couldn’t beat Sim’s money advantage. “Turns out, they could—with a little help from their friends.” THREE progressive parties worked together proposing a coalition council, didn’t split the vote, and won instead of beating each other.

Starting today, October 26, COVID-19 and flu vaccines are available to everyone aged six months and older. Vaccination is the most effective way to reduce the risk of severe illness, complications and hospitalization from respiratory viruses.

There are lessons from the recent BC election (the snap election fiasco was foreseen): the decline in voter turnout to 48% is concerning. Most of the decline was at the cost of the NDP but even the winning Cons got less votes. Democracy demands participation but not so much here.

Seniors watching their every $? Did you tell them about your proposal at City budget to hike seniors bus passes by 18%?

mark-sutcliffe.bsky.social@mark-sutcliffe.bsky.social

I just wrapped up my latest stop on the #24in48 tour, in College ward, with a visit to the Algonquin College LRT Station. I’ve heard from families, students and seniors who are watching every dollar.

Nice that you are willing to upgrade & rehabilitate the Sawmill Creek Recreation Centre but there are many others in dire need of this work: average age is over 40 years! Yet you continue to deprive $ to maintain/repair/replace City's aging facilities & infrastructure with your low tax budget.

mark-sutcliffe.bsky.social@mark-sutcliffe.bsky.social

We need to improve and enhance our community spaces. Here in Gloucester-Southgate ward, I’ve committed to upgrading and rehabilitating the Sawmill Creek Recreation Centre. Recreation centres bring people together, give kids a place to play and help residents of all ages stay active.

So let's think about our growing City and the declining state of our recreation facilities. Since Sutcliffe has been elected the City lost an indoor rink (Belltown Dome) with no replacement on sight. Average age of arenas is over 40; Ottawa is expecting 600,000 more residents. Picture is dim here.

LRT3 to Barrhaven will happen well after the next term of Council. Why? First, LRT2 opens next year; it will take some time to work the bugs out & see how much ridership it will attract. Then both the Province (Metrolinx?) and the feds have to agree to pay for it. Good luck.

Should local taxpayers foot $150-million bill for new hospital? NO! Healthcare is provincial and we pay provincial taxes for this service. We should not be subsidizing the provincial government with local property taxes - is not $ needed to fix our aging infrastructure? #ottcity
