A 56-year-old Mexican man held at a federal immigration facility in Laredo was found dead in his cell Saturday morning. His family says the center would not give him medicine for diabetes, high blood pressure and a heart condition. He is the 7th person to die in ICE custody in Texas this year.

Next comes a line of throw pillows promoting insurrection as self-care. May I suggest: “Be the January 6 you wish to see in the world.”

The German American Bund’s 1939 rally at Madison Square Garden featured enormous banners, American flags, swastikas, and a giant portrait of George Washington. But it was a political organization’s rally, not the federal government’s event.

Nothing says “visionary” like discovering the Trump train is all revenge, destination nowhere in 2026, when it was basically on the departures board.

Presidential history offers plenty of indignities but I’m struggling to think of a modern precedent for publicly inviting America’s principal strategic rival into a grievance against your predecessor(s)

Moby-Dick is the internet’s entire theory of dating: anxious (Ahab), avoidant (whale), and the deeply unfortunate vindication of “they always come back.”

Horror of horrors: I have discovered that I'm not 100% Lizzie--I'm a touch of Jane! This is a developing story because clear, vulnerable communication could probably resolve it all but that could also go badly so I’ll probably just go about my day! substack.com/home/post/p-...

substack.comMutually Assured Ambiguity; or, The Very Fine Art of Missing Each OtherToday’s post is a brief departure from my usual beat as I process the discovery that I am not, in fact, full Lizzie. No presidents were harmed—or even mentioned—in this account.

For better or for worse, the executive branch remains an extremely committed content partner!

As we head into the midterms and what is sure to be a... robust period of activity from the Executive branch, I highly recommend the perspective of presidential historian @AlexisCoe in Study Marry Kill: alexiscoe.substack.com?r=9h5 (very funny always on point)

At this point, if Trump ordered troops to deploy to Fifth Avenue with specific orders to shoot Trump’s political opponents on sight, a federal court would issue an injunction, but SCOTUS would overturn it, 6-3 “per curiam,” on the ground that nobody got shot yet, let’s wait and see.

David Barton’s flawed arguments about the founders and religion are influencing state legislators’ Christian nationalist policies. He’s widely read and a persuasive speaker— Note Barton’s claim in the linked WSJ article that because he “owns” some docs, he’s the authority— Twisted originalism

In 1812, Thomas Jefferson predicted that taking Canada would be “a mere matter of marching.” By 1815, thousands had died and the invasion failed. Trump has traded troops for tariffs but kept the ol’ imperial wager: pressure makes it pliant. The border says otherwise.

Presidential adultery has precedent, but they've kept the mistress, the gatekeeper, and the information system in separate rooms. If Harp is indeed Trump’s mistress, he has combined all three in one curious woman carrying a portable printer.

“Are mutton chops simply sideburns with territorial ambitions? Or can they be considered a beard that declines connection?” IMO… no beard!

A beard dispute! The archives do not speak with one voice. The two schools of thought: Strict Constructionist: No chin coverage, no beard. Substantial Compliance: Mutton chops that nearly connect constitute a beard. Cast your ballot!👇🗳️🧔‍♂️🙃 alexiscoe.substack.com/p/horace-gre...
