Important point of comparison here in support of Micah's general thesis is also that Trump and Republicans are much less popular today than they were on J6, 2021. That fact reduces odds of attempted coup and successful coup still further.

Micah@rincewind.run

I think they bitch and moan and scream about FRAUD and get laughed out of court and spend the next two years getting in increasingly dangerous spats with congress where they just flatly ignore oversight and budget stuff, aided and abetted by the Court I don't think Jan 3 ends with gunfire

Dealing with Elon/SpaceX isn't even hard. Just nationalize that shit. Incorporate SpaceX into Nasa. Use Starlink to provide free/low-cost internet access to everyone in the country. These are national interests made possible with national investments. Time to put them to national use.

Kind of telling that a paid nepo-baby political operative engaging in transparent Islamophobia hasn't triggered universal condemnation. Like, we do not need to reflect on what this says about AES. He was polite and dismissive, as he should have been. Next.

SCOOP: 'Tommy' from the now-viral exchange with Abdul El-Sayed is Thomas Teepell, a former staffer for Republican Senator Josh Hawley with close ties to Christian Nationalist Sean Feucht. He's the son of a former Bobby Jindal staffer whose consultant work was instrumental in getting Hawley elected.

The only way to get FIFA reform is for the FAs that make FIFA all the money (England, France, Germany, Spain, Netherlands, Italy (?), Portugal, Argentina, Brazil) to threaten not to participate. UEFA could probably do it unilaterally, but it would look better with CBF and AFA.

I read every post if this thread from a DC courtroom today where government officials obfuscated nonsensically about destroying public parkland. Judge seems at her wit's end with DOJ/DOI officials. Unfortunately, much damage already done. Thanks @mollyroberts.bsky.social for the reporting.

gm! at 10 I'll be live-tweeting the emergency TRO hearing in Judge Reyes's "courtroom" (this is on Zoom) in D.C. Preservation League v. Department of Interior, otherwise known as the golf course case

Premier League broadcasters probably complicit in trying to sweep the whole thing under the rug. Otherwise the value of their broadcast rights goes down… for shame.

Alex Bloom@alexpbloom.bsky.social

The whole stadium is audibly chanting “cheat” and the commentators won’t acknowledge it.

They can’t treat this as any other game and any other team. Who cares how good the goal was? It was scored because they have a $1B advantage over everyone else (and the benefit of a dodgy refereeing decision).

Mark Kastner@mkstnr.bsky.social

This is embarrassing from NBC from an editorial perspective.

The whole League is under a shadow at this point and the ref handing City this game on a silver platter isn’t gonna do anything to help that. Of all the things he could have done today, that was the worst for the Premier League’s facade of integrity. Hopefully it leads to harsher punishment.

Top Darwin Award candidate for the year, methinks.

A man has died after he entered a tiger enclosure at Yorkshire Wildlife Park in England and was attacked by a Siberian tiger on Saturday, according to the police and park officials.

This is an essential point. I would only add that in democracy, the state acts to carry out the will of the people, so state executions turn us all into accomplices of murder.

It is hard to get people to understand that punishment cannot and should not be capriciously infinite. That, even for the most hideous crimes, there is a moral limit to the amount of suffering one can inflict in return. To take away someone's freedom *alone* is a huge violation, after all.

Too often, political arguments convince us that “things are really very complicated. Only adults/serious can understand.” This is really quite basic. Killing is wrong Two wrongs don’t make a right Every 7-year-old understands both things intuitively.

Good thread of all the complications to which I’d add the enduring value of financial cheating after the crime. Man City’s squad today isn’t possible without this. What to make of their (e.g.) 2024 title win?

Yeah it's not great when the organization ostensibly with the purpose of keeping us safe is endangering us in the name of keeping us safe. Only solution is overthrowing the leadership of the organization or building an organization actually committed to protecting Jews.

Leah Gremlinberg ❌👑@leahgreenberg.bsky.social

I have no idea how to have this conversation within Jewish circles but the very obvious path we're on is that the ADL is devaluing the concept of antisemitism by making it synonymous with Ms Rachel and Macklemore, spending down the capital of American Jews in service of a genocidal apartheid state

Here’s a screenshot where I can literally see only four lines of (non-sequential) text. This is a good piece, but the reading experience is awful. @thenation.com

The state of media… Less than one third of the screen is devoted to the article. Hadn’t clicked through on a piece in @thenation.com and yikes.

As I begin the downhill slope, already going reasonably fast (at least 20-25 mph), said Unhinged Motorist honks at me. I don’t move. In another 10 seconds, I’m up to 30-35 MPH (I topped out at 35 MPH).

I am now well above the speed limit, so this guy is honking at me why, exactly? Eventually, he passes me *in the bike lane on the right* while shouting abuse at me out the window before swerving to cut me off back into the main traffic lane. He must have been going 45 MPH.

For the DC locals, I was biking down into Rock Crock Park from the west side on Tilden. There’s a bike lane there, but it is often covered with loose gravel, has a few manhole covers, and can be victim to surprise car door openings. So I biked in the road.

Yes! Stop with the notion that public opinion can’t be shaped! It absolutely can and it’s the job of leaders to do so.

Immediately after Jan 6, Trump’s approval ratings tanked to the lowest point of his first term (to roughly where they are right now, in fact). It was only as time went on, and elite institutions signaled that maybe it hadn’t been such a big deal, that people stopped caring as immediately

They’re genuinely going to have to set up a temporary office of investigation into crimes against democracy or something. There are so many little things like this and no one who participated can be welcome back in public life ever again.

Khashoggi's Ghost@urocklive1.bsky.social

This is insane. The U.S. Attorney's office in Chicago has spent the past year investigating Judge Juan Merchan's daughter Loren's ties to a Democratic fund-raising firm whose clients included Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. Merchan presided over his corruption trial where he was convicted 34 times.

DoorDash, you don’t need to address the DC Council, you need to address us — your customers, restaurant workers, and the drivers making your billions in profit possible. Withdraw your support for #HR9720. Oppose federal attacks on your drivers and the DC community. Until then it’s #DeleteDoorDash.

Martin Austermuhle@maustermuhle.bsky.social

In a letter to the D.C. Council, Door Dash says its recent advocacy for a House GOP bill that restricts D.C.'s ability to determine taxes and fees reflected its opposition to a new 20-cent delivery tax in D.C., "not D.C.'s broader ability to... govern autonomously."

My apologies to Enzo. I really underrated his shitheadiness here.

This is why as good as Ossoff is (and I like him a lot), if AOC runs, I really she wins the nomination easily. She has 30-40% of the primary vote in the bank. There’s no other clearly left person running. Khanna? Lol. And the centrists are going to struggle to rally around 1 person.

🗽LOLGOP🗽@lolgop.bsky.social

Just saw Sanders, AOC, and Abdul last night, and the self-evident answer is that AOC is Bernie's successor and that's it. Having Abdul, and eventually Mamdani, in the Senate would eventually fill the Bernie gap there, but as a presidential prospect, she it.

It’s possible the centrists and the normie right wing unite around Ossoff or Pritzer or someone, but I struggle to see that happening before a lot of the primary has already gone badly for them.

We will all have to be vigilant to not give in to slop. AI is just massively degrading every product in the name of efficiency. The only means of counteracting the trend is to move your $ (eyeballs, digitally) elsewhere.

Can’t wait for Andorra to get their first ever World Cup victory when they beat Laos in the play-in tournament!

I’m pro BlueSky, but the ability of this place to reduce every narrative to “Trump Bad” is frustrating. Even the jokes about Trump being the reason why the USMNT put in a stinker of a performance against Belgium or “we got what we deserved” serve to make Trump (not the team) the story.

That is a 0.03 xG shot that gets a 0.68 post shot xG and yeah that accurately captures that that was a fucking insane hit. What a game man.

They should have a panel of 9 former referees who read the original rules set down at the various English public schools, determine what CW Alcock would have thought, and change the outcome 3 years later.

Michael Caley@michaelcaley.bsky.social

and then there's the goddam penalty / red card VAR where you have fundamentally subjective questions which rarely have a single obvious right answer being puzzled over for a few minutes while the game is paused, and that sucks as hell for minimal benefit and I wish we'd just phase it out entirely

Whether the ball slightly deflects off one or another player on a set piece should be irrelevant. This would also un-undo a lot of goals scored (then overturned) by “player in keeper line of vision,” about which, who cares?
