Because I'm in my feelings: thank you to everyone who fills this place with art, or music, or prose, or poetry, or game prototypes, or fun new apps, or jokes. We're dancing apes that live to smear ochre on the cave walls and imagine it a herd of bison. To tell ghost stories around the fire and […]

Got the Jolla Phone I pre-ordered ages ago, and it's pretty much what I expected – some nice ideas and fairly solid hardware. But boy does it massively validate Apple's decision to launch the iPhone with a really solid software keyboard; typing on this thing is miserable because there is no […]

They've also got the issue of the entire UI using the gesture iOS and Android use for 'back' for other things, which is the sort of thing that's fine and dandy until you add an Android app compatibility layer. Also there's no status bar because knowing the time is an outmoded concept, I guess? […]

People are quick to accuse the PHP patch of being LLM-generated, but we should also consider that PHP is just Like That

abadidea@0xabad1dea.infosec.exchange.ap.brid.gy

ugh. the patch is massive 🫩 the bug is based on causing an OOM condition and no-one ever accused the php interpreter of being neatly and elegantly architected, so the fix touches everything 🫩 the bugs go back many years but backporting the fix to all those versions is wildly impractical 🫩 the […]

Reminder (because I needed it) that you should also be inventorying any home servers/homelabs for #PHP apps today

Tech people are the worst at evaluating passkeys: part the umpteenth. Passkeys are meaningfully better for most people's security (and many, many tech people have password habits that are much worse than they think they are)

RE: https://hachyderm.io/@samhenrigold/117378417461740571 some more iOS dev pro tips: - if a method is deprecated, that means apple finished working on it. it's actually more stable. - if the main thread becomes slow, create a second main thread. - if a view isn't appearing, set its zPosition […]

remember: if a method has a double underscore prefix, they cancel each other out and you can treat them as public API foo = public _foo = private __foo = two privates cancel out = public ___foo = private again ____foo = if the teacher doesn't approve your app within 15 minutes you're legally […]

It is a big day for #Firefox with the release of Firefox 157. I have been involved in a small part of this update for quite a few months now and I am really pleased it is available for more people to use. This update brings some subtle interface changes as well as bringing back compact mode and […]

Back on my No Man's Sky bullshit and spending way too long building my beautiful son, the good ship _Asterion Swims in Starlight_ #nms #nomanssky

Just noticing that NMS's bokeh weirdly has the same issues as fake phone bokeh, despite photo mode presumably having access to the depth buffer

tfw you check out a Discworld book from the library just to make sure you've got Adobe Digital Editions (shudder) working and immediately read the whole thing in a single day

That was most enjoyable. What isn't enjoyable is that when ADE inevitably bites the dust, the only remaining avenue for library books in the UK will be Libby, the ebook reading app that gives you exactly three font choices, none of which are suitable for a novel (the three choices are `serif` […]

I think a youth misspent mucking around with console emulators has left me without the pathological fear of 'black bars' around video content. I just don't get it at all – they're literally not illuminated; you can just not look at them. Plus it's a good place to put subtitles and playback controls.

Does anybody have recommendations for a team level @1password replacement? In light of their backing DHH and his repulsive views I'd like to be able to recommend a replacement for my company. We need shared vaults, TOTP, and centralised user management and vault recovery as a minimum. #1password

#Audacity 4 is a really cool case study in how to do a comprehensive UI overhaul that people are actually really excited for (which is vanishingly rare in this industry). If you haven't seen it, @tantacrul's video from last year on the astonishing amount of work this was is fascinating […]

Why is ebook self-hosting such a disaster? Basically every other medium has more or less turnkey solutions, while ebooks seem to suffer from being the hobby of people who adore USB cables and never impulse buy a book while away from their bespoke DRM removal pipeline

Went to the Ulster Museum's last night and coloured in a dress to look like a bumblebee. I can fully recommend going to a museum and doing this

I tracked these down out of curiosity. Here's the proposed packaging and receptacle labels to be used EU-wide (and in Northern Ireland) from 2028. Apparently everybody agrees that colour is useful, but nobody wants the same colours, so this is the current […] [Original post on tech.lgbt]

RE: https://mastodon.social/@Mastodon/117117221397911074 Big wins here, especially getting rid of the current multiple sidebar design. People struggle enough to use (or even notice) a single sidebar IME, so two was really pushing it

The fired Rockstar workers are asking supporters not to boycott GTA 6, but instead, to directly support the union's legal costs as it approaches next month's employment tribunal.

Don’t boycott GTA VI. Fight for justice for the people who made it: youtube.com/shorts/hhIES... T-shirt preorders open now! All proceeds from the t-shirts, which are ethically made and designed by us, will go towards the fired Rockstar workers’ legal funds. bit.ly/4xLc4IP
