New Substack post: ‘Edge Case Wars’ - Have the Culture Wars Been Misnamed? rolandmcs.substack.com/p/edge-case-...
Agreed! Stayed up for Ali fights and Nixon resignation and all sorts!
fully do not understand why people are getting mad at this, kids love staying up for naughty reasons, most adults will end up having to work through a hangover or a silly late night at some point, genuinely what is the problem here

"The present is different from the past, but that’s no use if you can’t remember the past. With feminism, the immensity of its achievements over the past 50 or 60 years disappears if you forget things used to be worse in ways almost unimaginable to those who didn’t live through them or study them."

One of the most interesting data analysts out there. Great read!
My brother wanted a London pub crawl. The result? My new Substack post: "Britain Lost 14,000 Third Places. They were Called Pubs. Is Your Local Next?" How private equity reshaped the local, which pubs are most at risk and most importantly what to do about it. open.substack.com/pub/laurenle...

legacy of Sir Tim Brighouse who did it in Birmingham and was then brought to London? www.theguardian.com/education/20...
Plainly put!
Pie theory www.taxresearch.org.uk/Blog/2025/08... Lisa Nandy, the culture secretary, is on the morning media round. She is treating the world to a dose of pie theory. She has actually referred to the need "for a bigger pie." And pie theory has never and can never solve any known economic problem.
Yep, made it worse
‘Medieval levels of health inequality’. Does not sit well beside Streeting’s superficial and zippy political ambitions for NHS, like ‘analogue to digital’. Goes much deeper mate and Labour have just helped make it worse with cuts to health welfare benefits www.theguardian.com/society/2025...

Almost every paragraph of this article describes another atrocity or war crime, with first-hand testimony from Israeli soldiers. Beyond obscene, and the callous indifference of the UK political and media establishment equally so. archive.ph/3LjoW
www.theguardian.com/society/2025... they want to understand whether there is a genetic reason for the incidence of acute pancreatitis and weight loss drugs? Surprised they haven’t just reached for alcohol and high tryglicerides
Ver well argued. As someone who has lifelong emotional and mental health disorders that commenced school age and also worked with young people I think universal rather than individually reactive is wrong
I’m in the Guardian today, arguing that we should stop them all-class mental health lessons in schools I've thought very carefully about ‘going public’ with this, because it's a sensitive argument to make, especially in the face of so many young people struggling. (cont 🧵) tinyurl.com/vun92cz7
I really do think I deserve the free book for this myth, just a few more likes please and I promise to actually read it and pass it on to someone who will read it when I’m finished
I regularly and happily debunk, not swimming for an hour after eating-probably one of the most pernicious and least challenged of urban myths
Joins a long list of both universal and targeted. Evidence is consistent, CYP choose the person they want to help them and not the service, also universal all effective therapy is successful because of the quality of the relationship and not the techniques used-an app is not a relationship!
This is a *key* new paper in the world of school mental health interventions A very large trial (N=6388) testing a universal CBT-based app for adolescent depression (13-14y) No effects found (on depression, anxiety, distress or insomnia) (🧵) mentalhealth.bmj.com/content/28/1...

Fuck Nigel Farage. Fuck disability registers, “overdiagnosis”, pity porn, and so-called bloated benefit bills. Disabled people have full, rich lives and add enormous value to the country. It is time for a new narrative. Who Wants Normal? is out now: linktr.ee/WhoWantsNormal

A welcome antidote to the xenophobic nonsense about "low-wage" migrant workers that floods the opinion pages of the Telegraph and Times. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...
speaking Truth to Power. What a stand to make!
The "he's not gonna listen to her" reactions are missing many points. Lots of other people are also hearing it. Lots of people can see him hearing it, then weigh what she's said with what he'll do. Lots of people can see her refusal to surrender these ancient teachings to the latest face of empire

Excellent John Harris column on the failings in care for adults with learning disabilities www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...
Dear John- as a sibling I take forward what my parents knew they could never finish. I and other siblings have even a less voice that parents of non school aged family members and the focus on the 'school age SEND crisis ' crowds us out even more.
Might be one of the most important, urgent things I've ever written: 50% of social care spending is on disabled people, but that part of the mounting care crisis is completely ignored www.theguardian.com/uk/commentis...

Worthy read as a reminder to self or how to nudge someone who may be lonely. Not everyone says hello but most say hello back!
As loneliness is topical again, here's a resource on what we can actually do about it (rather than just moan about it or make it the thing about us). If you find this resource helpful please chip in a quid to help pay me to make more. Thanks. www.bishuk.com/relationship...
