A 20% budget cut atop multiyear funding-induced cuts to research and direct terminations of projects underway will further degrade American leadership in science. This is early news & not even a proposal or appropriations - precisely the reason to speak out now. rollcall.com/2026/03/27/s...

Pleased to share the final version of this behemoth of a paper, now finally published. I guess I can retire now? www.nature.com/articles/s41... More functional data, many thousands of words removed, and a few other updates from last year's preprint.

On the side of small gripes: I'll never find reasonable to be asked to be online at 5am to review grants especially now that paylines are gone-and so are grants. It's unreasonably burdensome for all, even more so for those getting children ready for/to school. If the goal is inclusion, 5am is not it

It's a tragedy. I hope no one thinks that we are over the hump. This is quite literally how federally supported science goes extinct.

Congress rejected massive cuts to US science budgets for 2026, but much of the money still isn’t flowing to researchers. The culprit? The White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) is quietly slow-walking the release of funds. 🧵👇

This is an interesting article for those beginning down the cryoEM route for structure determination from the perspective of a crystallography lab. Not giving up on crystallography yet 😜 but I honestly can't think of a single crystallography lab now that isn't also using CryoEM in some capacity.

This is 252 R01s, only. The math is quite devastating

New and competitive renewal awards. The number of awards is 569 compared with more than 2200 through the same date in earlier fiscal years. All ICs have now made awards except for NIAAA, NCCIH, NLM, FIC, and OD. NEI (Eye Institute) made its first award during the new period. 3/4

This may end up being a hot take, but two things can be true at once: the new SciENcv is a pain, and it won't really affect things too much as most reviewers (...check notes...) actually use google/google scholar/REPORTER already

Soragni:Lab@alice.soragnilab.com

Maybe, and just maybe and controversially so, this buys into the concept that, by and large, reviewers will use google or google scholar + reporter, so why bother?? Obviously not a fan either, but there is the reality of what people actually do when reviewing applications that is of some comfort

Cells come in many shapes and sizes, with diverse physiological functions. But how do #organelles and their interaction networks remodel during #differentiation of stem cells into different cell types? Here’s what we discovered about neuronal differentiation: 1/13

Of so many things to be infuriated about, this is perhaps my biggest gripe. Pancreatic cancer patients, who face a future without hope, are being denied a potential game-changing therapy www.mskcc.org/news/can-mrn...

Crushing the mRNA industry in the US also probably destroys a bunch of cures for various cancers just as an FYI.

FDA's decision not to accept Moderna's flu vaccine filing has sent shock waves through pharma. With so much going on, in life and country, I have not been here as much as I used to. Posting about this big career change and reading the reactions, comments, and jokes, made me feel right back at home. Y'all know me too well. This space, like Twitter in the before time, is something else

Really nice article describing the molecular mimicry behind VITT in a very accessible manner. Original paper here: www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.... We all learned something, in this process.

My team and I are all moving to Colorado, where we have been met with incredible enthusiasm and such a welcoming environment. I am so thankful to everyone who helped make this next chapter possible, and to my team for being the best group of dedicated translational scientists ever

Many of you know it has not been smooth sailing at UCLA. I will share more in due time. I think there is value in discussing what happens when title, role, and mission are misaligned. Not yet, but stay tuned. For now, only good things ahead. If nothing else, we persevere ✊

In parallel I am serving as the Director of the Functional Personalized Medicine Initiative @ the Colorado Center for Personalized Medicine. Here, we are scaling our approaches into patient care, including a CLIA lab to deliver point of care organoid-based functional precision medicine solutions

Overly excited about this. It lets us substantially expand translational and clinical impact. I was drawn to CU’s laser focus on innovation, where solutions meet patients with real support. That is where impact happens, and it is our chance to build on the momentum toward patient-derived models

At CU Anschutz my team and I are working on two programs: on the one end, the lab will continue to focus on developing and deploying patient derived tumor models to study the biology and treatment responses of rare cancers as we have done for the past 7+ years

Last day at UCLA, fourteen years in the making. Very excited for what is ahead. Huge kudos to my team and our fantastic collaborators, they keep me going.

I have a 166,000 word, ~700 page document of how NOT OK scientists have been in the last year.

Making a faculty transition painful is one thing. Making it painful for trainees and lab staff is something else entirely. It is failure. It is not procedural. It is not an accident. It's a choice. You all can do better.

Academic transitions should not be painful. Period. They should be collegial and, if anything, an opportunity to reflect on what could have been done differently. This archaic hazing mindset should be a thing of the past.

We follow in the footsteps of Tony Letai, who led the Society for many years with clarity and vision. He has been a champion of functional precision medicine since its early days. I am deeply grateful for his leadership and mentorship

I am excited to honor our roots while moving forward with energy and purpose. Together, we will keep strengthening the evidence, building infrastructure, supporting trainees, and pushing functional precision medicine toward its rightful place as a core pillar of cancer care
