Happy publication to @alicemiranda.bsky.social, whose book Side Effects is out today! It's a critical examination of the health care ripple effects of the Dobbs ruling, and I cannot wait to assign this in my Health Law & Politics class. thenewpress.org/books/side-e...
Colorado's health dept, in a webinar on the 'One Big Beautiful Bill,' said nearly 6k legal immigrants lost Medicaid at the beginning of this month, and more than 3k more are set to lose coverage next year. Several states are worried the policy will cost far more in emergency care than it will save.
@alicemiranda.bsky.social shows that abortion bans aren’t just restricting reproductive care—they’re disrupting cancer treatments, chronic disease medications, fertility services and lifesaving medical research.
I could *easily* come up with 3 reasons each of my nephews are special using my own brain. Also, the 3 answers the bot came up with for this little girl sound completely generic.
Kids are awesome. Getting to know them is fun. One of my nephews (12) plays the keytar in a rock band. Another (10) makes incredible ice cream cakes. The littlest (7) invents hilarious words/phrases like calling seltzer “sizzly water”. I could go on…
Thanks to @msmagazine.com for this thoughtful writeup of my book, which comes out on Tuesday.
"The collateral damage of abortion restrictions is proving vast and pervasive."
JUST POSTED: Today at The NYT we are publishing a major investigation into how President Trump used his executive powers to expose millions of Americans to greater cancer risks.
A six month-long investigation built on more than 10,000 pages of FOIA records. Read it

Ezra Klein: The Medicaid cuts haven’t hit yet. The Medicaid cuts are enormous. They are going to throw millions of people off of health care — millions of Trump voters off of health care. … I think we’re moving back into a period of health care politics.
Woah - boards of service in the Marines and the Navy are ignoring Donald Trump and Pete Hegseth's order to purge transgender troops from the military. "Navy and Marine Corps boards have voted to retain trans members in nine of 12 cases." www.nytimes.com/2026/10/23/u...
NEW: A ProPublica data analysis shows that delays resulting from USPS’ cost-cutting measures have endangered the validity of ballots mailed in rural areas.
Counties that voted for Trump in 2024 have been most affected.
“A good part of the impact will be on states that are rural and red states, and it definitely has put some Republican candidates in a position of needing to explain the policy, which is complicated and difficult to explain. And as they say in politics: if you’re explaining, you’re losing.”
Congrats to AHCJ member Alice Miranda Ollstein of POLITICO on the upcoming publication of her first book, “Side Effects: How Abortion Bans Impact Everyone’s Health." Check your local bookstore on Oct. 27! Share your own professional news here: healthjournalism.org/share-news
Important new book reflects on the broad effects of the loss of Roe. Wider aspects of even non-reproductive health care have been shaken by the ruling.
What a treat to join @leahlitman.bsky.social & the @strictscrutiny.bsky.social squad to talk about what the Trump admin may or may not do on abortion & what the reporting in my forthcoming book reveals about the wider medical impacts of the Dobbs decision. Preorder your copy of SIDE EFFECTS today!

NEW from me & @gardnerlm19.bsky.social: The Trump's admin's abortion pill study is using software developed by a researcher whose opposition to Covid mitigation measures & push to roll back vaccine recs has made him a lightning rod. subscriber.politicopro.com/article/2026...

Fascinating tidbit in this interview with former Texas House Speaker Dade Phelan (R-Beaumont), he says that Texas Republicans anti-transgender ads aren't "resonating."

NEW: A Texas mom is suing the anti-abortion group Students for Life for violating the state's ban on ordering abortion pills from out-of-state doctors. Students for Life filmed a video of themselves ordering the pills in Houston in an attempt to show how easy it is to circumvent the law.

Schrödinger’s abortion pill review: Speculation is running rampant as activists & lawmakers try to guess what's inside the black box that is the FDA review of mifepristone. Depending on who you ask, Trump admin is either stringing along abortion opponents or is plotting a post-midterms crackdown.
A team of financiers, techies, and government officials are talking on a government-run chat room about how to get Americans to use medical AI apps, turn over their medical records — and for the companies to profit.

I've been reading to my 3 nephews since they were born. The oldest is now 12. It's so fun to see them react to my favorite books -- gasping at the plot twists, trying predict what will happen next, asking for the definitions of words and expressions. Best part of my week.
Also, the point of reading to a baby isn't to impart information -- it's to build an association of reading with love and safety and family. A robot voice kind of defeats the purpose, no?
Abortion opponents are pissed that the Trump admin is punting its abortion pill review til March, calling last night's court-ordered update "alarming" & "disappointing." SBA accused FDA of "trying to peddle fool’s gold"
Students for Life posted: "Inaction. Inadequate. Indifferent to the destruction"
BREAKING: The filing is in. Little detail but the Trump admin says it it will issue a report on the safety of the abortion medication "not later than March 2027."
The Trump admin must update a federal court in Louisiana TODAY on the status of its ongoing review of mifepristone, a drug used in most abortions. Ahead of the filing, anti-abortion groups aired grievances ab the agency's narrow scope, slow speed & secrecy. They're unlikely to be satisfied today.
Bronx residents will be exempted from new Medicaid work requirements due to the county's high unemployment rate.
New York notified CMS that it intends to implement this hardship exemption. The threshold = 8% unemployment rate or 1.5x the national average (whichever is less).

Abortion rights groups aren't happy either, and are blasting FDA for launching what they see as a “sham review” w the predetermined goal of restricting the drug despite its extensive safety record. As is often the case with abortion, trying to please everyone results in pissing off everyone.
