Ok I’m halfway through Abundance and like, what the hell, which part of this is about abundance? Was the title “Democrats say they are progressive but don’t wanna build affordable housing, and mRNA vaccine tech was overlooked until it saved us all” already taken?

Oh well I said all this before getting to the section of the book which advocates for more funding for domestic data centers so that the (presumed) superintelligent AI of the future is not controlled by a capricious dictator lol lmfao even

feeling sorry for the If Books Could Kill inbox as I have now finished and am certain beyond a doubt this book has been suggested to them eleventy kersquillion times

"late last year a tech exec was struggling with an impossible task" and it's literally thinking of what's cool about your kid, lmao these people are emotionally toast and should not be allowed to make decisions that impact humans

cool, cool

I mean I get it but I just think the premise is just fundamentally kinda dumb. The book says, imagine the future that geniuses will invent for us if we fund science and remove bureaucratic roadblocks. Which, ok, but imagine the present we could have if we funded the things that already exist

I usually do Halloween costumes with half of my ass, tops, and this year is shaping up to be no exception, but I have to say I’m pretty pleased with this handmade accessory

Kohen Wiley should be alive and any system that calls his murder justified should be torn to shreds

Ashton Pittman@ashtonpittman.bsky.social

JUST IN: The police shooting that killed 1-year-old Kohen Wiley as he sat in his mother’s lap in a Walmart parking lot in Senatobia, Miss., in June “was justified,” Mississippi Attorney General Lynn Fitch’s office said on Monday. Her office will not charge the white officer who shot the child.

This campaign isn’t just about me. It’s about my people. Election Day is November 3rd, so Minnesota let’s make our voices heard and show up for our people. Because this election isn’t just about your vote, it’s about our community💜

Guesses: Napster was a light p2p client, anticapitalistic and difficult to monetize, whilst Anthropic requires massive initial and ongoing investment, which capital loves Napster’s model ate directly into royalties of RIAA members, while Anthropic’s probably leaves big book publishing unfazed

Jen Taub@jentaub.bsky.social

Still trying to understand how Napster got shut down, but Anthropic is going public and still hasn’t paid us authors yet after stealing our work.

If you are the judge who signed this warrant betraying whatever principles you pretended to have in service of the whims of a 34-time convicted felon racist bilebaby, hope that works out exactly how it ought to for you

Definitely not wrong here. Hyperpersonalization = hyperfragmentation, each of us in a tiny custom little world sloppily tailored to our determined preferences and utterly devoid of meaning

union person@junlper.beer

this is the ultimate end point of capitalism, ai will completely atomize everyone and there will be zero shared experiences. there will be no culture, only pure consumption. this must be resisted

In France if you don’t fund schools or pay teachers enough the students will burn the entire country down. Anyways lmk if you want to donate to my kids’ read-a-thon

Minnesota is the fucking best and the Somali population here helps make it so. We stand up to dipshit demagogues trying to incite violence against our immigrant neighbors. You already FAFOed here once buddy

Laura Bassett@lebassett.bsky.social

Trump is desperately trying to incite a riot before the election so he can declare an emergency

Anne Carson’s Autobiography of Red is so weird and wrenching and funny and weird and tragic and imaginative and weird and utterly inimitable, and I often cite it as my favorite book of all time. So happy she’s getting recognition from my buddy Al Nobel

He’s right

25 years later and The Onion’s ParentCorner 9/11 explainer from immediately after the attack is a better understanding of the threat environment than the one produced by the U.S. government.

Nothing easier in the world for me but even if it’s hard for you you should learn about how Starbucks treats its employees, then stop going there.

when i worked at sbux in high school they kept scheduling me for like 35 hours a week and i kept saying i can't work this schedule i have to go to school. turned out they were hugely overscheduling kids to avoid giving enough hours to the adults that they would've qualified for health insurance

"Milo got arrested!" "That's good!" "By an unaccountable secret police force" "That's bad" "He supported them, though, so there's delicious irony at play." "That's good!" "But they came for him because fascist power has reached a point where petty infighting can lead to arrests" "That's bad"

There is so much amazing crop art this year at the Minnesota State Fair focused on the resistance to the ICE occupation we faced, this one in particular had me choked up.

Already running a soft 364-days-a-year boycott except when we go for thanksgiving and it’s the literal only place one can obtain coffee, but, fuck it, this year I’ll bring a kettle and a French press. pay your workers or eat shit

Starbucks Workers United@sbworkersunited.org

🚨BREAKING: Our union of over 12,000 baristas are officially calling for a Starbucks boycott. Read this statement penned by Starbucks workers on why a boycott from ALL customers, allies, and organizations is necessary to fight back against corporate greed:

btw this project is [always] seeking musicians to collaborate and/or gig with, and has existed in many permutations from full band to indie rock duo to looping guitar+cello, no musical idea is unwelcome (unless it involves using LLMs)
