Can we please stop reporting ads as gaming news?
These reports are released with dramatic numbers to get headlines and scare management into paying for consultancy.
You can't get the "headline findings and how the study was conducted" without emailing and likely need to pay for full results.
A new report, which interviewed 101 leaders from studios across North America and Europe, found that 94% said their studios use AI at some stage in development, but more than half said it isnβt deeply embedded into their production pipeline.
www.videogameschronicle.com/news/report-...
I've run academic studies in the past and its suspect just from what I can see:
1. "senior studio leaders" doesn't mean "people making games"
2. Changing how you report numbers like this is a common obfuscation trick
3. 100 is not a good sample, likely biased by an ex-PlayStation exec running it.
This absolutely isn't to have a go at VGC specifically, because I really like 'em. I also get why games sites need to find things to report on... But it is so tiring to see dodgy consultancy surveys like this reported as news when they are clearly fishing for customers.

Kenney Shape is now FREE! (and it'll remain free, forever) β¨
Previously a paid tool, I'm releasing it as a gift to the community. Today's update will be the final one, with no further updates planned. That way I can focus on new software & projects!

It's incredible isn't it, just how greedy people like Tim Sweeney are. They've made unfathomable amounts of money while treating their staff like shit, but they still think "what if we could treat people even worse, just to make some fictionally big number slightly bigger?"
Fuck all of them.
NEW: Epic Games has delayed its upcoming (not yet announced) Star Wars + Marvel shooter as it pivots to complete AI game development.
"No more hand-written code," a director told staff. All art "generated with full AI workflows."
Full scoop: www.bloomberg.com/news/article...
Lol, the response from Unity is obvious business speak gubbins.
"Itemisation is not scraping your work, it is a totally different thing that allows us to use your assets in our gAI systems and all undefined future things without asking. We're doing it for you, honest"
NEW: Unity is automatically opting Asset Store creators into supporting its generative AI platform, Unity Spark, via a process called 'itemisation.'
One dev told me the process should be "opt-in instead of opt-out" and said they are firmly against genAI.

If you're looking for an excuse to make a game (digital) and win a delicious pizza (physical) the next PIZZA JAM π starts November 6th!
itch.io/jam/pizza-ja...
So far Ive had pizzas delivered to Brazil, Canada, Sweden, Norway, USA, Italy, Taiwan, Poland, Germany, Argentina
one thing you learn from making a lot of things is that the nitty gritty details, the millions of tiny invisible decisions, ARE the art. The "higher level ideas" are not nearly as important or interesting
"AI lets you focus on the higher level ideas!!"
because we all grew up dreaming of becoming managers and CEOs
we all know the real artists at the very highest level are the shareholders, famously full of amazing ideas
Lol, are you kidding me? Microsoft Word/Powerpoint/Excel etc now all refuse to autosave files unless you turn on "All connected experiences" which turns on scanning your files and automatically saving files in the cloud.
Apparently its now impossible for MS to autosave a file on your local machine

Just saw this review for SOLAS 128 from a bit ago and I absolutely love how spot on it is π
Β£12.40 to help charity and get 7 cool puzzle games (where at least one of them is provably Turing complete) sounds like a steal to me!

Lovely news to start the week: SOLAS 128, my game about redirecting rhythmic pulses of light, is in a Programming Puzzles Bundle alongside 6 other awesome programming-esque puzzle games.
I'm a huge fan of The Signal State and Retro Gadgets looks really cool π

This shows the madness of our current political environment. Papers and politicians are spending endless political capital othering at risk groups and inventing moral panics.
Whereas most people actually want others to be safe, and governments to spend time fixing energy, housing, and fuel costs?
Control: Resonant is already absolutely batshit in the best possible way, and I'm only 1.5 hours in.
Plus I love the fact after all the recent discourse Resonant has dozens of options for customising the UI and goes "hey, what if we had players follow glitching pigeons rather than a waypoint?"
Honestly this might be the most Remedy Remedy have ever been and I'm so here for it. These are all taken less than an hour in...
(These were in previews so I'm not going to share any other shots, but yeah... it's a real looker so far!)
Gotta love this Discord '90% of people won't need to be validated' thing. Total garbage, as expected.
My throw away test account that has existed for 6 months, has no profile, and is in no servers? Verified Adult.
My account that has existed for 10 years, has a profile, in servers? Unconfirmed π€·
Removing credits like this is childish behaviour. Worse still, it's punching down rather than lifting up other creators and designers.
I have huge respect for Alan's response, and the New Voices grant is such a cool thing! Still, maybe consider picking up a different puzzle game instead?
Earlier versions of the game did acknowledge the creators of the original games at the start of each section, and I consider it unacceptable that this was removed at Jonβs direction. Stephen Totilo noticed this change and wrote a nuanced article here: www.gamefile.news/p/a-complica...
As Order of the Sinking Star is coming out next month, in advance of review coverage coming in I wanted to add one thing to my last statement about the game: bsky.app/profile/drak...
(note: at that time I didnβt have a separate personal account)
So, βOrder of the Sinking Starβ by Thekla was just announced, which takes several small free games (two of which are mine) and gives them a major graphical upgrade and mashes up their rulesets. I havenβt been very involved but itβs a great concept and looks cool.
PSA: my vector graphics library for Godot and Unity is currently free on itch. Iβm in desperate need of feedbacks please do try it out!

It's so wild to see the BBC uncritically repeat Microsoft saying "hey our main competitor might destroy the world, but our tech is fine" as if it's fucking news.
I dunno, maybe there is a really obvious ulterior motive there that the bare minimum of thought would have noticed?
look lads. the newswire burst that Xbox CEO Asha Sharma spends "hours" responding to CS tickets - whether true or not - is low hanging corporate propaganda. throw that shit in the trash. it's an insult to your intelligence.
I was looking forward to the Steam Frame, but after reading the reviews my interest has just evaporated. I'm totally baffled why they put so much effort into meh speakers, and haven't made it easy to use wired headphones?
And no new game? It feels like its been sent out to die, which sucks.
Honestly, the best thing about the new Wolverine game is that I can update all my "this is how not to do it" slides.
Would have been better if they'd released it with a bit more prep time before semester starts, but still.
Jokes aside I think it's really interesting to talk about this repeated cycle of overcorrection against player friction and this is just the latest game in a long list. Nintendo are really helping me out too, making the Navi references relevant again too!

βCOYOTE VS. ACMEβ has now officially surpassed the $30M amount Warner Bros. originally planned to write the film off for.
The film is now projected to earn over $60M domestically.
Daniel is sharing his starter pack of game devs that don't use AI, so I figured rather than just repost it, I would quote post it with my three no AI game dev starter packs.

Creating this no-ai indie games starter pack is one of the best things I ever did on BlueSky. Lots of great developers in here, making things with their own hands, some of whom I might not have found otherwise!! go.bsky.app/78u8M6Y
πHISTORIC GREEN WIN!
Local housing campaigner Lorenzo Martinico has made history by becoming the first Scottish Green to win a council by-election in Edinburgh.
Congratulations to Lorenzo and the Edinburgh Greens.
I've been thinking about this all day and I just hate it all the way down. Extra busywork, ugh. You have to hold a button to make each one, uuuuugh. It is for a tiny buff for a tiny amount of time? UUUUUUUUGH.
It's nothingy. Faux-content. It's bland, boring UI elements pretending to be game play.
I snagged a Pebble Time 2 earlier this week and, of course, I immediately wanted to make my own watchface so...
Here's my first attempt! An Art Deco Sundial where the sun/moon moves around the border with the time. Plus step tracking on the middle!
The Portal mod I worked on is finally released!! Wow!
I made the escape sequence, which is pretty significantly altered from the original, but structured around mostly the same gameplay beats. I'll follow up with some screenshots once I'm off work.

I see Google is getting more pressure from shareholders for all the money they're wasting on gAI! An obnoxiously large 'Ask Gemini' button has appeared somewhere you might accidentally click it and it's animated just in case you might miss it.
I have all 'Smart Features' turned off too. Aces.
I'm so tired of creatives on YouTube jumping on gAI.
It's so disheartening to see them throwing other creative disciplines under the bus for exploitative tech from thieving billionaires.
So many musicians going "AI is ruining music so I made this using Claude"
The cognitive dissonance is strong.
