FWIW I don’t think that AI is an existential threat, nor on track to become one. I do however think that the leaders of the biggest AI companies, AI’s strongest boosters, and some of the folks who are most adept at using it to exploit others are actively hastening along OTHER existential threats.

I think @goldwagnathan.bsky.social was the person who made this point but because we have collectively accepted Nazism is The Worse Thing in the World (correctly!) this means that clearly it's not mainstream and no one important could support it, and if you accuse them of such you're a hysteric.

The clearest evidence to me that human brains have some irreconcilable differences comes from the popularity of the idea that the only button a microwave oven needs is +30 seconds and how that doesn't fit at all with how much I would hate such a microwave with a passion.

I can't help but wonder if the name they have is something obviously fake, like Daniel Cooper.
