NEW: On Oct 20, Japan will launch its most audacious space mission. It’s hoping to fly to Mars, land twice (!) on Phobos (“fear”), steal pieces of that alien moon, and bring ‘em home. That’s right: to pull of this heist, Japan must confront fear itself. @science.org www.science.org/content/arti...

I hinted that there would be more images from the Juice flyby, so here is the timelapse of the full event! It's always amazing to get these views of our fragile Blue Marble from the spacecraft we send out to explore the solar system! 🔭🧪 #planetsci

Great day here at ESOC, staying in the control room with the team while the images came down and processing the JMC images. Earth proved to be a real stunner with Africa and Madagascar in full view. #planetsci 🔭🧪

A successful Earth flyby improves Juice’s course to Jupiter Earlier today, Juice flew just 8640 km above the Indian Ocean and snapped these images with its onboard monitoring cameras. 1️⃣Africa, by Juice monitoring camera 2️⃣Madagascar, by Juice NavCam 3️⃣Moon, by Juice NavCam 🔭 🧪 #planetsci

Coming up tomorrow, ESA's Juice spacecraft will fly past Earth for another gravity assist! I had the fantastic opportunity to help planning the JMC shots this time around. We're trying a bunch of new things with this camera, so I'm really excited to see how they'll turn out. 🔭🧪 #planetsci

Juice is returning to Earth, again 🛰️ On 28 September the spacecraft will fly by Earth, coming within 8640 km of our planet. The closest approach will be over the Indian Ocean at 13:45 CEST (11:45 UTC) 👉 www.esa.int/Science_Expl... 🔭 🧪 #planetsci

Here is a fun little animation showing how the shadows on Phobos change over the course of its short (7h 39m) day. The other image was actually taken two weeks ago, but since Phobos is tidally locked to Mars, it doesn't really matter. 🔭🧪
