"It is easy to understand why so many of us are fond of birds. They are lively; they are lovely; and they are everywhere." Opening sentences to "The life of birds", by David Attenborough. Such a memorable opening!

Super excited to share that our method to convert language models to byte-level has been published in @nature.com! This was originally the approach behind Bolmo. We now generalized it to other model families. All checkpoints (including new Qwen and Llama models) and data are public!

Ai2@ai2.bsky.social

Our paper on retrofitting language models to operate over bytes โ€“ the approach behind Bolmo โ€“ has been accepted to Nature! ๐ŸŽ‰ Weโ€™re also releasing new checkpoints that extend our method from Olmo to Qwen & Llama. ๐Ÿงต buff.ly/l5ILoNT

๐Ÿคฏ > TLDR: ARR faces a reviewing crisis: submissions are growing far faster than reviewer capacity. 38% of the ~17K May 2026 submissions came from authors with no available publication record

Tell you cat I said "THS THDPSSSSPS"

Dr. Jeroen W.P. Wijnendaele@drdragases.bsky.social

I am once again begging Hollywood to stop using the Greek alphabet for an Ancient World movie, if they can't afford to even throw a couple of quid at anyone with an inkling of the language. Unless they really think audiences are dying to see THS THDPSSSSPS

Today NeurIPS is announcing our official satellite event in Paris. After responding to the call from Ellis following the success of EurIPS in December, we are pleased to reach a new milestone by joining forces with the NeurIPS organizing committee for the 2026 edition.

๐ŸงตNew paper: "Lost in Backpropagation: The LM Head is a Gradient Bottleneck" The output layer of LLMs destroys 95-99% of your training signal during backpropagation, and this significantly slows down pretraining ๐Ÿ‘‡

In light of the current funding situation (worldwide), a modest proposal: instead of pouring billions of dollars into GenAI claiming "it *could* accelerate science and research," consider putting 1% of that amount in what *will* accelerate science and research. Namely, funding science and research.

Introducing Bolmo, a new family of byte-level language models built by "byteifying" our open Olmo 3โ€”and to our knowledge, the first fully open byte-level LM to match or surpass SOTA subword models across a wide range of tasks. ๐Ÿงต

From medicine to geo-guessing, humans can get incredibly good at solving visual recognition tasks. But how is this skill learned, and can we model its progression? We present CleverBirds, accepted #NeurIPS2025, a large-scale benchmark for visual knowledge tracing. ๐Ÿ“„ arxiv.org/abs/2511.08512 1/5

LLM log probs approx lie on low dimensional ellipses which are hard to "forge", check out Matt's cool work :)

We discovered that language models leave a natural "signature" on their API outputs that's extremely hard to fake. Here's how it works ๐Ÿ” ๐Ÿ“„ arxiv.org/abs/2510.14086 1/
