as someone who's got an autism + ADHD dx, I am astounded every time I see people say things like "autism/ADHD has nothing to do with <bad thing>" in response to some story about someone with said disorders who's done a crime, this is obviously not true in the general case!

worse, campaigns to destigmatise mental illness for middle class audiences have implied there is no link from mental illness to anti-social, dangerous and criminal behaviour, so the role of psychosis and other severe mental ill-health in violence gets downplayed

is there anyone in the free software/open source movement who's writing *actually good* thoughts on how current AI issues intersect with the philosophical underpinnings of free software/open source?

The sheer amount of news coverage over the ATO credit card drama is proof of the outsized role of modern gentry of small business owners in the political system (I say this as someone who has previously paid a tax bill with a credit card for pointsmaxxing purposes)

Incredibly disappointing for Shoebridge - who is one of the few Greens I've ever taken seriously on defence policy - to be abandoning Ukraine

Shane Carrow@shanecarrow.bsky.social

I was already probably going to break from 15 years of voting Green and return to Labor at the next election, but this is the final straw for me www.theage.com.au/politics/fed...

Having to wait ~20 minutes for a connection at the bus stop I'm currently sitting at is just a really awkward timing - long enough to be painful, short enough that walking to the nearest cafe, getting a beverage and walking back just doesn't quite feel worth it

My (low-confidence) impression, as a non-American, is that it's the other way around: when you can't win the political battles required to abolish the death penalty, energy is concentrated on the subsidiary issues which can be fought out in courts rather than legislatures

Max Kennerly@maxkennerly.bsky.social

That's where I've been for a while. We can't even reach questions about the death penalty itself because we fail essential predicates such as "fair and consistent criminal justice system" and "reliable death penalty verdicts that leave no reasonable doubt" and, as shown tonight, "humane execution."

the Commonwealth countries that abolished hanging didn't do so by arguing technical points of hanging procedure in court, they did so by just abolishing the death penalty

University police departments are a fascinating Americanism. How can each university (and I suppose every tiny city and town and village) have such a tiny force of its own and manage them to anywhere near the standards of modern policing?

Gamer friend messages me asking "should I get a 5600X or a 5700X for my media PC" and I'm like "well my main desktop is a... 3600X maybe [all I know for sure is it starts with a 3] so I think the 5600X will probably be fine"

I resigned from Google today. I enjoyed my work and loved the people, but my GDM team was working on a new generation of chips to make AI much faster and cheaper, and I think AI is already progressing too fast, so I had to quit.

My entirely irrelevant Medicare hack hot take: while the feds work out their policy, the ACT Assembly should legislate for AI agent liability and in doing so incidentally protect all the federal systems physically in Canberra

In particular, I wish their type of extremely online wasn't "watching silly amounts of their particular corners of YouTube etc and otherwise deliberately choosing to live under a rock about stuff that's literally front page mainstream news"

Wishing more of my close irl friends were *my* type of extremely online rather than *their* type of extremely online

Don't need them to be the same kind of addict I am, it's a very good choice to not be like me, but there are serious conversations I want to have with the people I trust most in my life but who are missing so much context

The most annoying thing about imposter syndrome is that sometimes you're actually a bit of an imposter and you actually have weaknesses and you can't convince anyone of this because they just tell you it's imposter syndrome

so I can't say I'm an expert on sniper tactics in modern policing or combat operations, but my understanding was that snipers don't normally pre-announce the specific structure from which they'll be sniping
