Given Trump’s Easter threats to carry out new war crimes in Iran, we should think one or two steps ahead about a coup attempt connected to the war. And then deter it. (1/17)

Although likely inconsistent with international or domestic law, I believe the strike on Iran was necessary. It weakens the “axis of evil” — with Russia tied down in Ukraine and Iran weakened — and may make China think twice about attacking Taiwan, possibly delaying a global conflict by 10–15 years🤔

OTD in 1921 Soviet invasion of Georgia began. Less than a year before we signed a treaty with them promising we'd never invade. Lying we won't & then invading anyway is a tradition I maintain to this day.

🇵🇱🇺🇦 Kyiv has just received 130 generators of various capacities, purchased with funds raised through the incredible Polish charity campaign "Heat from Poland for Kyiv" ❤️THANK YOU POLAND

When ‘strategic necessity’ becomes an argument for possession, the map of the world stops being stable. Today Greenland is framed as protection; tomorrow, someone else will be framed as a risk.

It increasingly appears that the real “enemies of God” are not the protesters in the streets, but the regime’s own cronies who hollowed out the system from within 👇

History shows that the cost of prevention is always lower than the cost of war. Better to be wise before the damage occurs than courageous when it’s already irreversible. Europe must act now !!

PM Tusk: Now we have a simple choice. Either money today or blood tomorrow. And I am not talking about #Ukraine only, I am talking about Europe. And this is our decision to make. And only ours. I think all European leaders have to finally rise to this occasion. So this is all that I can say.

Good start. Breaking energy dependence was essential. Now EU should show the same determination in building credible military and defence independence. True independence isn’t only about where our energy comes from, but also about our ability to protect our values and borders on our own terms. 💪🇪🇺

Ursula von der Leyen: We are entering a new era: Europe’s energy independence from Russian fossil fuels. Thanks to REPowerEU, Russian gas imports - both LNG and pipeline -are down from 45% at the beginning of the war to 13% today. Coal imports are down from 51% at the beginning of the war to zero.

December, 13 1981, Poland learned once again that “temporary measures” can last indefinitely if backed by enough tanks and curfews. The government called it a defense against “Western subversion,” but the only real threat seemed to be too much free thought per capita. 👇

Filming was banned, speech was monitored, and the only thing free was fear. But don’t worry — the Red Army was right there on the border, engines warm, just in case Poland needed a little more “brotherly assistance.” 👇

Tankies 1990-2025: European countries can't join NATO without asking Moscow cos Europe has limited sovereignty Tankies now: Why isn't Europe showing full sovereignty now in these "peace plans"?

Alaska showed power’s illusion: Trump bowed, Putin grinned, yet history refused to yield. Europe held, Ukraine endured, and weakness dressed as strength collapsed in plain sight.

Anders Åslund@andersaslund.bsky.social

Thoughts on Alaska one week later: 1. Trump's invitation of Putin to US soil remains a massive betrayal of everything that the US stands for. 2. His invitation did nothing positive: Putin won & Trump appears his obedient servant. /1

Whoever writes that "all wars end with negotiations" should be refuted by an decent foreign affairs journal, because it is not true in modern times. 1. World War I ended with revolution in Russia in1917 and Germany in 1918. /1

Land for peace with Russia would be the biggest invitation ever for Russia to continue with its aggression.

The Kyiv Independent@kyivindependent.com

⚡️Trump reportedly tells European allies, Zelensky that Putin open to land-swap talks. The comments came during a phone call on Aug. 6, just two days before U.S. President Donald Trump's deadline for Russia to agree to a ceasefire.

I agree with this about Putin. He has locked himself into a position that leads to the destruction of Russia. The West is still living in a dream world about a reasonable, realistic Russia that can be negotiated with.

Peter Hagedoorn@peterhagedoorn.bsky.social

He is not risking everything. He has no other choice if he wants to survive. He will never never give up the chosen path. Thinking about peace is western dreaming without any realism nor evidence.

Russian masscres of civilians only happen because the West keep allowing them. Russia is a terror and crime syndicate that has been given freedom to act with impunity. Ukrainian civilians, children, pay the price.

Trump and his officials claim everything’s fine despite the market crash and promise wealth for “all” Americans. It’s just like when Poland’s PiS officials denied the risk of inflation in late 2021 while secretly investing in anti-inflation assets. Likely the same story in the US. Buckle up 🤔.

Russian terror isn't getting attention either any longer. Every newspaper should be draped in black each time this happens. Leaders should flock to the cameras. Instead we have a deafening silence. Shame on all of us for accepting this.
