Thrilled to share my new feature about a plucky group of scientists investigating the effects of rising temperatures on animal nervous systems. Come for The Blob, stay for the "unflappable" bird brains!

The Transmitter @thetransmitter.bsky.social

Many aspects of animal physiology contribute to temperature tolerance. But “the nervous system is one of the major drivers of animal expansion,” says Wolfgang Stein. #neuroskyence By @sarahdeweerdt.bsky.social www.thetransmitter.org/environment/...

Panera manages to make the most timid of product recommendations. When a brand says "You might also like..." they're expressing uncertainty using language called "hedging." Have you seen a brand make the most lukewarm, uncertain pitch for its own product? Leave a comment to tell us about it.

But do these qualifiers make a message more or less influential? Well, in this month's episode of Opinion Science, Dr. Demi Oba reveals that it depends on what kind of hedge it is. Would you trust a brand more if it sounded certain - or careful?

From episode 119 of Opinion Science, featuring Dr. Demi Oba. His research highlights how people express various kinds of uncertainty, and some of it can be persuasive--even more persuasive than expressing certainty.

The underlying study has no control group and only enrolls people with poorly controlled asthma. It's just pre/post comparison of asthma symptoms. Results are entirely consistent with reversion to the mean. Or seasonal change, for that matter. Come on people, we can do better!

Sammy Roth@sammyroth.bsky.social

Insane new research. Scientists gave asthma patients free electric stoves to replace their gas stoves, then checked to see if symptoms improved. Not only did symptoms improve, ditching gas was *better than medicine.* Details in today's newsletter: www.climatecoloredgoggles.com/p/electric-s...

Another clip from this month's bonus episode on Patreon, featuring Jake Teeny. Jake shared his thoughts on the use of AI in behavioral science, including how and when trainees benefit from AI tools (or not).

A peek behind the scenes at Opinion Science, featuring a conversation catching up with the show's first-ever guest, Jake Teeny. This full video bonus episode of the podcast is available now on Patreon.

When people see their political party talk about why their positions are morally correct, it inspires people to take action and express their support for that party because they feel especially proud. From ep 118 of Opinion Science with Dr. Jae-Hee Jung.

Key Takeaways: - Pride is key to understanding why appealing to moral values can mobilize supporters to take action. - Contrary to the popular belief that moralizing must spark partisan backlash, inclusive moral messaging can actually move the needle among people who aren't already on your side.

880 NOAA firings, plus over 1,000 deferred resignations or buyouts. “These forced the National Weather Service to halt or reduce weather balloon launches at 11 locations…And that loss of data then translates into less precise forecasts, more uncertainties in the forecast.”

Here’s Why Weather Forecasts Have Seemed So Inaccurate Lately. Meteorologists simply aren't able to gather as much data as they used to, and you're suffering for it. gizmodo.com/heres-why-we...

Can we quit it with the 200-page supplementary materials? Or at least let's just all explicitly agree that these bloated supplements have NOT been peer-reviewed. Sincerely, Guy who still prints out papers to read and didn't realize the reviewer PDF was 200+ pages
