Today I was asked “is it bad to deliver talks in a monotone” A question I’ve been asked before. But today my answer changed… the answer is “no”. Soon I’ll tell you why. Then you can fight me.

Today’s home: Oxford Today’s topic: Policy engagement Actions some of them took away: - submit a parliamentary question - re-form a defunct APPG - respond to a government Area of Research interest 💪 They didn’t even know those were actions you could take this morning. It’s a powerful course 💪

Note to self. Use sensible photos on linkedin so you don’t look like a weirdo when clients share your post. I was showing off my little biscuit. 🤷‍♂️

Had 3 request this week about if/how I’m working on REF impact Cases. I will be helping several institutions prepare their cases, but I’m limiting how many unis I’ll take on. So if you want to know how your cases stack up or need input on evidence capture - get in touch!

My accountant wants to put my fee up to £340+VAT a month. I feel this is too high. I do my self assessment & bookeeping myself. Plus I don’t do payroll. They just do VAT returns and end of year accounts. Any other small businesses happy to share thoughts? Feel free to DM.

Anyone been watching Wargame? I’m two episodes in and honestly just bought a wind up radio and torch. Real politicians are tasked with deciding the UKs response to a hypothetical attack and watch the consequences unfold.

Heading to a 9am lecture @glasgow.ac.uk just like I did for the first time 22 years ago (almost to the day) The only difference, I’m giving the lecture 😅 Excited to be the first speaker at the new Science Communication module for Life Science final years.

In 🇮🇪 virtually helping researchers use social media effectively by • using prompts & scheduling to improve efficiency • keep safe by limiting negative interactions • be a good neighbour, boosting others & fostering dialogue I’ve over 25 social media sessions scheduled between now and Christmas 🤯

For the Science of Star Trek event I looked at the periodic tables in Star Trek. In short: I wish I hadn’t. How do you undiscover elements?!

Can I tell you something that was surprisingly special about this event - Martin speaks like me It’s not just that we’re Scottish, we’re both from very working class areas outside Glasgow. In my whole career I’m shocked that I can’t think of having shared a stage with someone who sounds like me 🤯 🥰

New photos of the Science of Star Trek event @rigb.org. I’ve met most of the main Star Trek actors now, and Martin Quinn has to be the loveliest.

Hiya London. Fantastic view from the training room at the Royal Free Hospital today. Working with a group of researchers developing soft robotics to help care for elderly and disabled people.

Can I pull together a lineup or what? Truly incredible night celebrating Star Trek’s 60th Anniversary. We talked real space exploration, in show prosthetics, alien biology and chatted to Scotty himself, Martin Quinn 📸 James Klug

(Unfortunately Dawn Wages wasn’t able to join us in the end. Also if I didn’t ask you to be part of this, please don’t fall out with me. There are so many wonderful voices I would have loved to have included but we had to stick to 90 min)

Summer must be over, because I’m back on the sleeper 🚂🛏️ On a last minute emergancy dash to London for some recording work. It’s the fancy one tonight with my own shower on board ✨

For the first time in my career I worry about my ability to reach new clients. So many in the engagement/Researcher Development space are flooding socials with well performing ChatGPT content that I feel I’m getting lost in the tide.

Happy publication day morning to me!! Dear friend @chrislintott.bsky.social said on record that it was "Truly unique! Sparkling with charm and interest & uncompromisingly clear". In person he said "I don't want you to take this the wrong way, but it was surprisingly good" 🥳 Major compliment! 🤗🧪

I hate Action Learning. It actually breaks my brain. I mean I’m happy for you if it’s helpful but I will never go near it. Having useful information but not being allowed to share it. Mind blowing. Does not compute.

I don’t like this poster at the Science Museum. It asks “can you make a Khan” For context Khan is a superhuman produced through eugenics. I don’t think this is the correct springboard for Sci comm to use. The idea of eugenics shouldn’t be trivially dealt with or ignore the harm the idea perpetuates

🎂Happy 60th Star Trek 🎂 One trek photo for ever radio interview I’ve done so far today. Been lovely to celebrate the legacy of the show with the BBC regional teams today.

Men, if you ever feel lonely and need social contact - go to any WhatsApp group you are in, no mater how old or inactive, and ask “is it worth paying excess insurance on the rental car?” Charge your phone and clear your day.
