Someone asked me if this promo video was created using generative AI? I can tell you quite honestly, that I spent a full 20 minutes grimacing at my screen to come up with those lyrics. The video part was easy....and it's not AI. 3/3

My latest Under Review podcast is out and this time it's an honest reflective guide to dealing with redundancy. In the podcast I discuss many things relating to the process, which I think will help others who have been through the process or those facing it. podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/u... 1/2

Honestly this advice changed my life. "Just say ‘I disagree’." You have do that, but you don't have to do more than that. Don’t make some elaborate argument, don't call the person scum, just make it clear that you don't think like that. And get your mates to chime in, too.

𝗠𝗶𝗿𝘁𝗮 𝗚𝗮𝗹𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗰 𝗶𝗻 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲! 👏 In a Q&A, Mirta Galesic, who co-leads CSH's Collective Minds research group, talked about the best way to respond to hate speech – and why simply saying “I disagree” matters a lot. 👉 www.nature.com/articles/d41... 👉 Collective Minds research group: shorturl.at/xDr30

The catch? None. I’m doing this to build relationships and show what I can offer. If you want to work together on funded projects later, great, if not, you still walk away with practical solutions. If you think my advice was valuable, tell others you work with but there will be no hard sell. 4/5

Whether you need feedback on a specific project, guidance on a tool, help planning a dissemination strategy, bring your questions along. Please share with anyone involved in research projects who want to discuss how they can improve their activities, from research bid to impact gathering. 5/5

Bring your questions on: ● AI in research communication ● Social media (LinkedIn, Bluesky et al) ● Altmetrics ● Podcasts ● Video/animation ● Infographics ● Lay summaries and blogging ● Wikipedia and esoteric comms channels ● Research impact, ● Public engagement ● Reputation management 2/5

I’ll also be hosting a couple of free 101 introduction sessions starting with creating data driven infographics, followed by how to create your own simple research animation. I plan to release my online half day introduction to academic podcasting course for a very limited period for free. 3/5

Pesky emails and meetings getting in the way? You just need to give yourself permission to duck out for 3 hours and join a community of fellow academics and PGRs. Join me for another episode of Write Club Radio - the coolest writing retreat on the planet. bit.ly/3TCXzsc #PhDChat #AcademicWriting

My latest Under Review podcast is out. This time it's Open Educational Resources (OERs) under the spotlight with Prof Dawne Irving Bell. Dawne established the National Teaching Repository, so knows more about this topic than most. Apple podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/u... 1/2

Anyone else getting Microsoft Word Paperclip flashbacks every time they write an email thanks to AI's grammatical suggestions on amphetamines? Thankfully you can turn them off, so normal service may resume and you can expect wonky emails from a human being.

In the following years we saw various issues with Dropbox and Google Drive as academics had little no no guidance on what they could do safely to share documents with others. Finally measures were made and thankfully nothing major happened to cause public embarrassment. 3/4

But the lack of guidance and support meant we were skating on thin ice as they looked for shortcuts caused by the demands of their job. We're also seeing that with AI and will see it even more as we start to see how seemingly innocent collaborations with other nations aren't as they seem. 4/4

I recall writing my department's first information governance document alongside a IT colleague well over 15 years ago and it falling on deaf ears as senior management saw this as more of a hinderance than a help. 2/4

A snippet of next week's Under Review podcast where I chatted with the brilliant educational champion, Professor Dawne Irving-Bell about the importance of Open Educational Resources (OERs). 1/2

Dawne talks about the National Teaching Repository which she established to help educators share OERs. She discussed what's needed to make OERs more formally recognised as part of HE and the barriers to making resources open. And of course, picked a few things to sling into the Under Review bin. 2/2

It’s kind of embarrassing how susceptible academics are to this sort of nonsense. It should be straightforward to establish the existence or non-existence of prestigious honor societies or “academies” in fields you are nominally a leading expert in, for heaven’s sake.

Feedback for the first Write Club Radio was overwhelmingly positive. I am really pleased that the focused radio format worked for so many of those who turned up. There was a lot of chatter in the breaks and a lot of words written in the focused sessions and everybody loved the vinyl records. 2/4
