The mystery of the Universe is its comprehensibility. Computational psycholinguist, I guess, but not a professional account. Opinions etc etc my own. he\him (pfp cc. Dustin Nguyen)

Preparing for my mid-semester piano recital like my students study for their midterms (the night before, after having ignored it for the past two weeks) 😅

Sooo our department building got so flooded that even non affected offices and labs are being “boxed up” without ETA from betting back in 😭🙃

I’m gonna be in Montreal (for #NWAV54 !!) for a few days! Suggestions accepted to things to do in a lil free time (food! Places to walk and see nice things! More food and maybe music? Art?)

"Syntactitians please stop talking about computational efficiency without a well-specified notion of a) computation and b) efficiency" 2026 challange

NEW: In March the White House released an FY27 budget request that zeroed out the National Science Foundation's directorate of Social, Behavioral and Economic Sciences (SBE). For months it was unclear what would happen. Now, with FY26 over, the damage to SBE is coming to light. My reporting:

🧵 New preprint! Speech is noisy, yet we usually understand it. I used eye-tracking + a self-supervised speech model (HuBERT) to show that speech comprehension unfolds as real-time Bayesian "noisy-channel" inference & that listeners tune their noise model to their environment 👇 osf.io/preprints/ps...

I don’t know that we have made it clear enough to the general public/international community how the NSF is just…not funding social and behavioral science research anymore? Like?

I'm recruiting 1-2 PhD students to join our lab in Fall 2027, through either Computer Science or Information Science at the University of Colorado Boulder! Looking for people with interests in NLP plus [healthcare | literary studies | narratives | social media | etc.]. Join us! 🏔️☀️

cls-lab.comCLS Lab — Culture, Language, & Systems | University of Colorado BoulderThe Culture, Language, & Systems Lab at CU Boulder studies the language systems that transmit and shape modern culture, from internet platforms to literary archives to language models.

The university: let’s take a thing everybody thinks works Perfectly and that supports local food makers and…make it not so in the name of “serving the campus community better” 😩🙃

Like, yes I intellectually understand it’s just a matter of getting used to it but! I hate it! I just can’t get the temperature in my pots right 😩😩😩😩

I will accept bracketed representations BUT PLS You can not just say “this moves from inside <vaguely defined giant XP which might be violating 10 different moving conditions> 😭

Excited to share a preprint of work done in collaboration with @emilynguist.bsky.social ! osf.io/preprints/ps... TLDR: some effect sizes are larger in lab than on web-based platforms. So when evaluating quantitative predictions, considering the testing platform can be important! 1/n

This paper introduces a wide range of encodings for constituent parsing as sequence adaptations of parsers from other paradigms that had not previously been cast under the sequence-labeling framework. Not that it matters anymore since the NSF is dead, but it's *really* demotivating to have a proposal consistently ranked Excellent and still go unfunded. I know it is a lottery and there is no money etc etc but SIGH.
