I keep being too busy to fully write out my rant about how this was (one of) the goal(s) of Elon buying Twitter. Black, brown, queer, trans, folks, women, etc (finally) had a (critical) say about tech that was being algorithmically amplified. He needed the echo chamber back, especially to hype AI.

Anil Dash@anildash.com

We're seeing it right now in tech; a number of prominent tech commentators (all coincidentally happen to be wealthy & influential white men? huh!) have all just endorsed returning to Twitter again. But they weren't content to just _be there_ — they also insisted it's not a hostile environment.

Bringing back shame, just in time for winter.

Have to admit I enjoyed this "AI disclaimer" in Anika Collier Navaroli's @columjournreview.bsky.social article on how journalists could and should write about AI. www.cjr.org/ask-anika/so...

“For all the recent talk of an impending AI apocalypse and humanity being annihilated in some catastrophic, amorphous, unknown, hypothetical manner, I think the more risky scenario is allowing would-be god machines to continue their unfettered engagement in today’s information war.”

How to keep AI from killing us with fake news, by @anikacolliernavaroli.com. www.cjr.org/ask-anika/is...

This week I learned that my students have no idea who Dick Cheney was. I then immediately learned that the words “sorry to this man” along with “KeKe Palmer meme” also had no meaning to them. I…still have not recovered.

I keep thinking about this post and how it basically describes the last several years of my career.

whewww I am trying to write the most boring half-ass essay about, like, "trust & safety" and you're just going to get everything I care about alongside/instead

Today I launched a new column in @columjournreview.bsky.social called Ask Anika where I answer questions about the ethics, law and best practices for journalists using new technologies! For my first missive, I wrote about why feeding unpublished drafts into LLMs gives me cause for concern.

cjr.orgAsk Anika: Should AI write my headline? In the first edition of our new technology advice column, Ask Anika, we learn what happens when you feed unpublished work into an LLM.

No one told me that one of the great perks of being a professor is getting to sit on stage and be memorialized forever in the back of every student’s graduation photos in various states of unflattering facial expressions.

“Who gets to be seen as fully human in this world? Our job is to expand that and to push and make that as wide as it can possibly be.” Artist Mimi Ọnụọha's work questions the contradictions of technological progress. Anika Collier Navaroli spoke to her for a special podcast series:

There was a lot in that interview. And I’m still struck by Ezra Klein saying that “there was a politics of content moderation that took hold that was more about enforcing boundaries of what were and were not ideas we should be engaged with - rather than about engaging them.” Like. Whet.

Once upon a time, I told one of these CEOs that the intersection of gaming and politics on his platform was going to be dangerous enough to lead to offline violence and get him dragged before Congress. He told me that I had “a problem hypothesizing issues.”
