Firing the staff who map Kremlin disinfo ops because the work is "misaligned" is a political decision. Its a policy choice to stop looking. The ops dont stop when the analysts do, they just get a friendlier reception.

Ukraine was winning the war, so Trump kneecapped Ukraine to help Russia. I wish it weren’t that simple, but it is. Our president is in bed with our enemies.

Why has Trump escalated against Omar and other critics? We have analysis for you over on the @americansunlight.org newsletter. americansunlight.substack.com/p/where-trum...

Nobody likes that the internet has been overrun with fake shit, and it is materially, negatively impacting our relationships with our neighbors and our trust in literally everything. Republicans benefit from this environment, and therefore attempted to criminalize the study of information ops.

Great post from @ninajankowicz.com on last weeks pressure campaign from the Trump administration and Michael Shellenberger around #Disinfo2026. Make no mistake, this is a Putinesque attempt to shut down civil society and curtail the free speech of researchers and advocates.

The US government used to stand up for civil society, not brief against it. But that’s exactly what it did last week when a few researchers dared to ask if the US posed a foreign interference and information manipulation threat. My write up—and advice: open.substack.com/pub/wicziped...

RUSSIA TARGETED A BUS FULL OF CIVILIANS AND MULTIPLE APARTMENT COMPLEXES THIS WEEK ALONE. Maybe the ingrate is the guy who made the decision to fund that terrorism by purchasing oil in a last ditch attempt to boost his poll numbers?

I doubt Russia has tons of diesel to export. They're in a fuel shortage crisis. It'd be illegal, violating sanctions. And awful strategy while Russia is attacking Ukraine, menacing NATO allies, and helping Iran target Americans. But looks like Trump trying to jawbone markets before the midterms.

Incredibly honored to be included as a "censor" in Michael Shellenberger's latest fan-fiction release! What great company to be in, next to my censurous colleages. Never been happier to read 14 pages of bland, moderately-edited Claude-generated text in my life... www.public.news/p/europe-see...

Credit to the US for making the point the conference was trying to make about US foreign interference in European democracies for them, and bringing more attention to the conference and its themes than they could have possibly hoped for. www.politico.com/news/2026/10...

Screenshot 1: Panel description on 4 June 2026. Screenshot 2: Panel description yesterday, after GAC dropped out. Cosmetic edits, yes. Re-framing? Absolutely not. The "sentence in question" about the US acting, in specific cases, as a FIMI actor, remains substantively identical to the June draft.

Global Affairs Canada (GAC) claims it dropped out of #Disinfo2026 "following changes to the framing of several panel discussions." GAC was scheduled to chair my panel today on disinformation in the Arctic. But, our panel description hasn't changed since June...! Receipts in the next post below.

theglobeandmail.comCanada drops sponsorship of conference that cites U.S. as foreign-interference actorOfficials will no longer chair sessions at the event in Lithuania, including one on disinformation in the Arctic

The craziest thing about this whole scandal is that the Trump administration appears to be most aggrieved about panels in which AMERICAN participants were sharing the view from here. It’s just so blatant.

“What this amounts to is a purported defender of free speech at the state department using the enormous power of the US government to try to pressure Americans from criticizing their government.” www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026...

Shellenberger is seemingly preparing to smear a bunch of people attending a conference on disinformation this week. Ten bucks says he’s gonna claim the researchers there are cEnSoRiNg yOu!!!1 In reality they’re presenting their ideas. Talking. Debating. You know, using their speech rights.

Ben Shultz@benmshultz.net

Michael Shellenberger appears to be preparing another piece falsely claiming that a conference of researchers studying disinformation is tantamount to a shadowy cabal of censorship. Spoiler alert: conferences, in fact, are the definition of free speech. My response to his questions is below.

My thoughts about the UK's new National Centre for Information Defence. I think it can survive the 'censorship' backlash; UK discourse isn't as infected by conspiratorial brain rot (yet). But it's incumbent on the Burnham gov to fill the info void. www.thewayfinder.net/p/the-uk-get...

Wasn't that kind of them? (Of course, civil litigants have no private right of action for treason. Durrrrr.) As in Murthy, the court found the plaintiffs had no evidence for their claims: "allegations from Plaintiffs simply assume causation through conclusory statements."

So many good soup recipes here! Sharing my mom’s pasta fagioli recipe because several folks asked. It’s nothing fancy (and probably not very authentic, we’re polish!) but it’s a weeknight staple for us in fall and winter
