6. There can be controversy over drug approvals for people with rare conditions because there doesn't have to be as much evidence that it works. But people with rare conditions deserve treatment.

I wonder where dopamine disorder “encephalitis lethargica” and other virus-triggered complications sit in the ranking. “Experience”? life history, known as “age”and stage?

Ed Hagen@edhagen.net

Still, in my view the only profound differences between people are due to age: infants vs. adults. Otherwise, everyone is almost identical (and I'm open to swapping the order of sex vs. experience in this list): x.com/ed_hagen/sta...

A species can be common in an ecosystem and still be doomed. If it can no longer reproduce, e.g. due to degradation or climate change, it's likely already facing extinctioning. Sometimes ecosystems reflect land-use decisions from 50y ago as much as today's. New piece on ghosts, debts, and credits.

Gender dysphoria, needing meds to conceive or terminate and so on, labour needing to be induced. A spectrum from accepted to disputed needs People aren’t seeking treatments frivolously. Being human, requires care. I might be halfway there to no longer needing any 😂

But what interests me is how much overlap between conditions and treatments there is. My migraine meds are also mood stabilisers? Testosterone for menopause and for trans masculine health? Anti-androgens secretly in my birth control? Stimulants for POTS and ADHD?

This is not medicalisation of normalcy. Would have been sicker, had less function, without meds/tools. Most not helpful long term. Stuff has been awry, parts of me let other parts down. No name for this evolving condition. For others it encompasses EDhS, PCOS, metabolic, neurodevelopment, ME-CFS

Most HPV16 research treats the virus as genetically static. It is not. HPV16 isolates differ by up to ~2% of its ~7900 bp genome, and can differ in cervical cancer risk by >100-fold. We analyzed 4704 carefully-curated HPV16 genomes to study this variability. 2/9

Great paper. Can we then also conclude that rare recessive diseases would have been more common, where it not for the negative effects that are exerted on carriers?

Fun fact: Mendel originally planned to breed mice but the abbot at his monastery took offense at the idea of a priest having anything to do with sex, so Mendel switched to peas. Mendel was grateful that "the bishop did not understand that plants also have sex.”

People distrust healthcare, and often it's not the medicine itself. It's because of exceptionally negative experiences with medical "professionals." I'm a white male. And even I have experienced doctors treating me like total garbage. Makes me scared of how marginalized people are treated.
