I’m sure folks know this but you don’t need to know about dual cooling systems to know that you don’t want or need a data center in your community. Additionally, no, we don’t need a Black-owned data center in the name of a “seat at the table.” just to get out ahead on that foolishness.

Inside the humanities we’re slowly losing our minds as we shout this til we’re hoarse—of course education in the name of ROI is an ideological project! Of course, treating knowledge as a content strategy results in bullshit! Still bracing to read this eloquent call to close the business schools

“there are not a lot of people here working at the allentown airport. the same person who brought the stairs is the person driving the bus, and you’re not all going to fit on the bus. also, we’re not going to be able to unload your luggage from here, so you’ll get it later, somewhere”

(flying back to newark, flight was delayed multiple times due to weather, diverted to allentown for what was supposed to be a quick refuel, and then … broken)

"It's already here, what do you mean you think you can refuse?" is just another variation of the agency-stealing inevitability narrative. The future is not yet written, and we can shape it, starting with rejecting inevitability and claiming our agency. /fin

Something I will never understand as long as I live is phony intellectual Republicans giving free advice to Democrats. The only advice I have for Republican politicians I'd care to share with them can't be posted on here

"Jon Ossoff, my advice to him is, if you start calling your political opponents Nazis, maybe it's time to shut up. That's just not what we do here in this country." -- David Brooks, this evening. Remember, Brooks still gets very handsomely rewarded by the fossilized media for saying shit like this

Defund and abolish ICE. Melt down their weapons and shift its budget to social services and affordable housing. Ban everyone who led or worked for ICE from any government job. Corporate death penalty for the companies that aided them. Citizenship to all of its victims, should they want it.

I worry in the next few years we're all going to have to have some patient, complicated conversations with older or less media-engaged relatives who see the le epic trump takedown posts but do not stuff like this about who Gavin Newsom Really Is

It's easy - and correct! - to focus on just how ghoulish and profane this view of human creativity is. But even if you're the most cynical capitalist on earth, the evidence that people would enjoy entirely dehumanised content, at anything like a scale that would justify this hype, is extremely thin!

Imagine looking at the media landscape—music, books, movies—and concluding that it would be better if it were all simply infinite reflections of yourself, if you never had to be exposed to another personality, another experience, another life. Just you, you, you. Sounds fucking horrifying.

Probably reflects my weird tech-adjacent "career," but this was also surprising to me since most of my job interviews have either been over the phone or in coffee shops

Faine Greenwood@faineg.com

It truly never occurred to me that bringing iced coffee to a job interview would be a problem (not that I’ve done it myself, but I’m not a big coffee fan). Nor would I care if I interviewed someone who did. I wonder if this just a generational cultural difference we didn’t really notice until now.

I feel like a lot of people missed that Omelas is about how we think about utopia and ethical dilemmas and not really a metaphor for real societies because real societies suck ass and still have Omelas children for the love of the game.

When will the people who argued in April 2025 that Democrats should stay silent on immigration own up to being frankly just disastrously wrong about the politics of mass deportations? Their punditry basically bordered on enablement
