Ontarians, the general population can get a flu shot on Monday! It's an early and mean flu year, so it's especially recommended.

there no conceivable time or occasion when you will find them in such countless numbers, and in gayer or more jovial spirits, than around a dead sperm whale

Basically, sometimes we've got to deprioritize the "Why are they like this???" question and be a little more curious about why, nevertheless, other sectors and interests want to associate themselves with tech assholes + gain something from joining in their project.

Do I know any (pref. Canada-based) researchers working on cognitive atrophy, AI, and (higher) education? Asking for a journalists.

The new season of Slow Horses is off to a great start. (Also, wow, it's been a good while since I've seen an artful establishing shot in a TV show).

Also, in light of the near miss US strike on a Chinese merchant ship, I'm asking: 🕯️Please Slow Horses writers' room / Mick Herron: find a way to work idiots with LLMs into the future of this series🕯️

Hey if your Dean ever comes up to you and says, "hey colleague we need you to become an emergency program coordinator with a few week's notice. You can just bank the course release that comes with that role and use it later," think about how--indefatigably--later is not now.

I've gotta run a welcome event for about 30 students in the same program, but in different years. I thus ask the necessary, brave question: Does anyone know any ice breakers that are actually good?

Nice bread and trains conspicuously missing from the strategic priorities/tech transfer list!!!

Dear @mark-carney.bsky.social, we want to bring the relationship with Canada to the highest level possible. I would like to work with you on opening the door for Canada to being the first associate member of the EU. And create a common prosperity and economic security space.

All nationalism is fake but "we founded an independent country because we were angry about the prevailing price of oil and natural gas and disagreed with federal policies regarding pipeline investment" is even faker than usual.

I will say this. Quebec separatists usually come from a genuine belief that Quebec is a distinct culture and nation that should be a country. Alberta separatists seem to think of separation as a big "I'm mad" button that will magically force Ottawa to write them checks for being very special boys.

Ontario is still writing its rules for datacentres. But Ford's pitchdeck for foreign investors explicitly markets Hamilton’s waterfront for deregulated AI datacentre development, including "sovereign" AI opportunities." Sovereign AI. Built for foreign investors. With no rules. #HamOnt

fucked up that nigel farage is a brexiteer and pro-crypto. makes it hard to criticize him, what with him being eurodivergent and a miner

My take on the feds' new AI data centre framework: It's basically just a copy of Trump's rate payer protection pledge. It rebrands voluntary corporate pledges as if they were government mandates. They're not. They're pinkie promises, and they're already falling short. www.cbc.ca/news/politic...

I want some to, gonzo journalism style, have a year where they exclusively publish and present at obvious scam venues. What would it be like to keynote at the Second International Conference on Biotechnology and Recycling? Especially if I know fuck all about that topic? Who else would be there?

Nothing brings people together quite like a mutual rejection of Big Tech’s AI data centers. “Each overstep brings legions more into the big tent of data center resistance,” writes Todd Paglia, executive director of Stand.earth in his op-ed in @commondreams.org. #GreenSky

Our findings help update and expand our account of the climate profiles of global telecommunications, with some neat policy implications for how to build a greener network. But I think the coolest part of the paper is how we got our data. In a small industry, where there's lot of privacy concerns/

and no one wants their competitor to know their internal numbers, you can get an academic under NDA to be a 'secret keeper,' reviewing everyone's numbers, and then calculating an average across several companies that can be the public figure. It's a good way of building trust and transparency!
