Latest from our lab! Detailed and committed work by Jennifer combined with Hiro's special skills👌. Wonderful collaboration with @nikogeldner.bsky.social lab (Damien and Etienne) and @jalonsos.bsky.social 👇
During secondary growth, primary protective barriers break, and a new one forms beneath: the phellem.
But what triggers phellem to differentiate and become a functional barrier? Our results show it’s mechanical cues from tissue rupture 🌱

Applications close: 1 November 2026
@mc-caillaud.bsky.social's talk at #SLS26 suggests actin-mediated regulation allows flexible implementation of a shared core strategy, favouring division perpendicular to the growth axis and symmetric partitioning, while avoiding lateral wall anchoring.

A major advice I try to pass on: science is only worth it if you can delight in the discoveries of others. It’s great to make your own discoveries but they are too few to sustain you over the long haul.
Europe always chooses science and partnership.
Japan too.
Japan is now officially associated with Horizon Europe.
This means Japanese researchers and organisations can take part in the world's largest public research and innovation programme.
Let's break new frontiers together.
In an heoric endeavor, Xiomin Liu, PhD student in the lab, characterized the dynamics and topology of the cell division machinery during cambium stem cell divisions. Super fruitful collaboration with the group of Sabine Müller (@phragmoplast.bsky.social).

I am incredibly excited and grateful to have received an ERC Advanced Grant for my project, WOODIER: What Makes Trees Woody! 🌳
This award feels like the culmination of many years of work carried out in our research group, and the biggest thanks go to my lab members. bsky.app/profile/erc.... 1/x
The results of the Advanced Grants 2025 are here!
Out of 3,329 applicants, 319 leading researchers have been awarded an ERC Advanced Grant. Congratulations to all! 🎉

Now we are ready to take the next step.
Unlike herbaceous Arabidopsis, trees produce proportionally much more wood than phloem because they need the extra wood to support their massive stems and branches. 6/x
In WOODIER, we will investigate how aspen trees generate this excess wood and how the dynamics of wood formation change across the seasons.
I can't wait to get started. Open positions available soon! 7/7

So, what is WOODIER about?
Over the years, our group has focused on understanding how the vascular cambium produces wood and phloem in Arabidopsis. This work has given us a detailed understanding of the molecular mechanisms that drive vascular tissue formation. 5/x

Really pleased to see Qing He’s work out in its final form (www.pnas.org/doi/epdf/10....). My group had previously shown that PXY-mediated regulation of cambium development had an ERECTA-mediated influence, but we didn’t understand the mechanism. 🧵
