Great opportunity. I absolutely loved my visit there — great people and good science and a cool town. And if this wimpy southern Californian enjoyed Helsinki in January you can hack it no problem.

University of Helsinki is hiring tenure track Assistant/Associate Professors. A main theme is Future Food and candidates with plant and crop breeding and genomics profile are encouraged to apply. Please share to potential candidates! The call closes November 16th. www.helsinki.fi/en/hilife-he...

Come back soon Yaniv! Preferably in June, so you can do some Scots pine crosses yourself!

As our three-month stay in Helsinki comes to an end, I’m leaving with a deeper appreciation for sauna, Moomins, the sea, pine seed development, my family, and especially my collaborator/host/friend @pyhatanja.bsky.social, and her lab members.

What a memorable day to give and listen to inaugural lectures of new professors at University of Helsinki! Here we are after the lectures with colleagues Fred Stoddard and Anne-Maria Pajari and the dean Ritva Toivonen from the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry. @helsinki.fi

It is a little bit depressing that 80 % of papers applying population genetic methods typically estimate π (nucleotide diversity per bp) wrong, and even worse, do not realize that when looking at the point estimates.

Baffling failure of a well-studied trade-off in plants to survive the transfer from greenhouse studies to the open field. Intriguing study from @derekseveri.bsky.social @plantevolution.bsky.social and colleagues in @plosbiology.org

You know over the years what I have been really bothered by? When I was in college, bryophytes were taught as if they were relics of the past. Its sole purpose was to demonstrate trait progression leading to angiosperm, w/o mentioning their importance in nature, research, or potential in biotech.

Who started this ridiculous habit of using K for thousands? 10K run? 10 kelvin run is freezing! And now in scientific writing too. I know there are big battles going on now, but I will focus on this one instead.

Still waiting for a reimbursement from a US University that invited me there to give a talk last August. My advice: do not ever pay the travel expenses yourself when invited and promised reimbursement.

Me to my lab members: "No need to stress about your Lab Meeting presentation. Just show us where you are at in your project". Also me: *spending 8 hours to prepare my own lab meeting presentation and getting nervous about it*.

The newer sequencing tech, Oxford Nanopore, is traded on the London exchange as part of the FTSE 250, and it is likewise having a rough day, down 10% today so far, 42% since Trump took office. These tools are how we genotype cancer, flu, measles, etc., by the way.

I do not talk about politics a lot here. But the way Trump and Vance talked to Zelenskyi is the most disgusting thing I have seen for a long time. So sad, we are not able to really stand up for Ukraine. We could do so much more.

Tanja Pyhäjärvi reposted

Zelensky is a wartime leader watching his people suffer and die under Russian attacks every day. To be lectured and lied to by Trump and Vance, as they defend the war criminal dictator committing these atrocities, is unimaginable agony. An everlasting shame for America.

Jim Sciutto@jimsciutto.bsky.social

Trump has not uttered a critical word about Putin but he and his VP publicly belittled the leader of the nation Putin invaded.

Tanja Pyhäjärvi reposted

Watched meeting between Trump and Zelensky and all I can say is that I have never ever seen something like that. IMO, disrespectful were Trump and Vance, not Zelensky. And not only to the US but to Ukraine and Europe as well.

A few warm days stimulate early-flowering trees. This hazel alder, Alnus serrulata, has opened long yellow catkins - male inflorescences - to release pollen to the wind. The red female inflorescence opens a bit later on an individual tree to minimize self-pollination. Are you seeing tree flowers?

People that use Mac, and have to deal with exchange/outlook and google calendars! Is there a solution, where only one calendar application would allow you to see, sync, invite and RSVP all accounts? The multiple calendar sync issues ruin my life and mental health!
