Feels like every day we are hearing bad news about the humanities, but this stat is pretty shocking. Graduate research production has roughly declined by half in 10 years.

Humanities dissertations have fallen by 49 percent since 2015, compared with a drop of 4.5 percent in the social sciences, according to a new analysis of nearly 445,000 dissertations in these two fields over 65 years. Explore the data: https://chroni.cl/4yxUZ4S

On Friday 20 November, UCU members at universities across the UK will come together for a national day of action. With jobs, courses and the future of higher education under threat, we’re coming together to fight back. Campaign packs will be arriving in early November to help you get ready.

Last Thursday, the students in my History of Colonialism and Decolonization course #uniroma3 visited the National Central Library of #Rome, including my favorite reading room, which houses the collection of the former Italian Institute for Africa and the Orient (IsIAO).

More than the easy criticism against Princeton, and despite the dire academic landscape we live in, I find this deeply inspiring. Tene rem: the rest will follow.

Credit to the US for making the point the conference was trying to make about US foreign interference in European democracies for them, and bringing more attention to the conference and its themes than they could have possibly hoped for. www.politico.com/news/2026/10...

So much talent wasted from the great applicants who don't get them. So much effort and resources required to evaluate these. So much dread and imposter syndrome for many of those who consider applying Something needs to give.

I should be prepping for Welcome Week next week, but instead I am reading some of my #TBR pile, at the top of which was this: www.cambridge.org/core/journal... Beautifully written, & captures the essence of why I love being an historian. #skystorians #amreading

Reminder. There's an early modern pub night for PhDs & ECRs (& others interested at any stage of their careers) held in London every month. To be added to the mailing list, send me a DM. It's an informal welcoming event. We meet at different historic pubs across central London. #earlymodern

Flashback to when I witnessed an 'eminent' Oxbridge Prof give a totally wild lecture in which they presented slides arguing that 'global history' was more popular than 'taylor swift' despite having done google searches without having put these terms in quote marks... IFYKYK.
