Made my mandatory pilgrimage to the Lucas Museum today and it was glorious. Grateful for not being yelled at by museum staff/ fellow attendees for sticking my face within 2 millimeters from every other masterpiece in this majestic collection.

FASTER, PUSSYCAT! KILL! KILL!: Movie frame drawing 10. Catharsis and genuine laughs in an unlikely place. I’d find out later that Tura and Haji were part Filipino and I knew that freaky rage was familiar on a deeper level.

BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA: Movie frame drawing 8. Turning that old trope of white savior on its head way before I knew I needed it. My friends and I will continue quoting this movie until we’re as ancient as David Lo Pan.

CHUNGKING EXPRESS: Movie frame drawing 7. I’d discovered this movie around the same time as the French New Wave in the mid 90’s and I’m sure I was as insufferable about it as it sounds.

DO THE RIGHT THING: Movie frame drawing 6. Spike driving head-first into the eternal pain of being American, remaining painfully relevant/ prescient in 1989-now-[until I’m dead?].

FEMALE PRISONER 701: SCORPION: Movie frame drawing 5. Meiko Kaji: the immortal cinematic ice queen of vengeance. I’m grateful to bear witness to her singing “Flower of Carnage” during a recent screening of Lady Snowblood.

MEAN STREETS: Movie frame drawing 4. Marty setting the modern template for the square trying his best to guide his charismatic maniac BFF through the fire of dumb youth.

MYSTERY TRAIN: Movie frame drawing 3. The first story of this triptych remains a bittersweet time capsule of my wandering romance from lifetimes ago. I eventually visited Sun Studios in 2019 and whispered “Carl Perkins” into Elvis’ microphone.

A BETTER TOMORROW 2: Movie frame drawing 2. I’d stumbled upon John Woo in the early-90’s when I was absolutely starved for cool Asian representation outside of Bruce Lee. Along with Tony Leung, these dudes did some heavy lifting for my undeveloped brain.

PARIS, TEXAS: Been drawing over frames of my favorite movies to give away as prints/cards at my CALA table in December. Like all of my favorite works, this movie has evolved for me as I get older. Will be drawing more of my movie faves in the next few days.

Attended a Jun Fan seminar taught by living legend, Guro Dan Inosanto. I couldn’t help but be a slack-jawed fanboy watching & listening to Inosanto, especially during his Bruce Lee anecdotes. Although it felt like my first time on planet earth using human limbs, it was an amazing experience.

"Our collective hatred of Trump is only surpassed by the amount of hatred Trump has for himself. It simply isn’t possible for an actualized human being to be such a needy bitch. Not possible for somebody who has a single iota of belief in themselves to rely so heavily on the approval of others."

I was going over some of the trends/eras of illustration with my students today and Corporate Memphis created the most conversation. It was compared to a business man in a happy face mask, Arial & pop music. Good in contexts like brightening up a train station, bad in masking the cruelness of tech.

I’d almost forgotten how good it feels to have a physical copy of my comics (compiled from random rambles posted in the past 5 years). Will have them at my CALA table this December. Shout out to Incendiary for the title inspiration.

Absolutely adore this tiny 1” Shining painting by the great @amandavisell , just in time for Halloween season (Kim Deal pick placed for size reference).

I wasn’t gonna acknowledge this cursed day, but 25 years seems to demand reflection. So here are some Polaroids I took on September 15, 2001, when Gibson & I wandered around Manhattan for camaraderie and sanity. Don’t think I’ve ever shared these.

I’m currently putting together a compilation of (mostly) autobio comics I made from 2020-26. It’s called “The Product Is You” and I look forward giving these comics directly to you in person if you’re attending CALA in December, instead of throwing them into the abysmal algorithm of these dumb apps.

So sad to hear about Andy Williams’ sudden passing as a longtime Every Time I Die fan. I was woefully ignorant of his amazing wrestling career and it’s been so bittersweet to see how much he flourished and was loved by both music and wrestling fans.

Seeing the iconic Breeders for the umpteenth time. Kim Deal has my heart for life. (Cranky side note: *No thanks* to the greedy fuckheads charging *$30* to park near the venue in *this* economy. Congrats on discouraging me from attending another show there indefinitely, you scumbags)

Appreciation post for NY hardcore legends Incendiary, who’ve provided years of desperately-needed catharsis in these insane times. Side note: Currently making new noise with my friends, good vibrations keeping these creaky bones moving with meaning.

This essay by @jillmapes.bsky.social is really crushing and also beautifully written. I also have hope that this period of cultural decline isn't forever and people will remember the value of art and criticism that's not also advertising!

I can’t express my reaction any better than Ana’s words. I felt a similar deep DEEP disgust when I had the misfortune of seeing that repugnant AI Ghibli ICE post. Every scum-sucking fuck involved in this shit are making me pray for a Hell.

Ana Marie Cox@anamariecox.com

I cannot imagine a more disgusting appropriation of Spider-Man on both moral and aesthetic grounds. This is fascist AI-slop, the thirstiest cultural ambulance-chasing they could commit, and I hate them even more for it.
