Back on Twitter, I started to post about some somewhat obscure films I love. At first it was just to pass the time until I started doing it every Sunday and realized it should've been a thread. So I'm just gonna continue that here but fix that one mistake.

Is there a more moronic art criticism than "you have to put yourself in the POV of an audience member when it came out"? How naive/presumptuous do you have to be to believe that you know enough about any period to think that you can accurately do that? Think about how many films, books, songs...

social events, fashion trends and even people get filtered and forgotten in the flow of time. And now think how those elements had subtly shaped the moods of the people at the time. So how the fuck are you supposed to roleplay as them when you don't even know the day to day reality they lived by.

Took 3 friends and my little brother to see The Devils yesterday; They were initially surprised at how funny it was as they were expecting a horror film (though I let them know beforehand that it wasn't) and by the end, they were discombobulated by the sheer hysteria of the last act.

The Devils (1971) If you google "The Rape of Christ", this film is the first result. That should let you know what you're in for.

That's cool and all but where's maddening?

The decline of American society can be traced back to the exact moment that Television not only started being respected but was thought to have usurped cinema. Even the MCU is TV on a large scale.

Shout out to the Criterion Channel for updating their app with a new layout and unlike every other app getting a face-lift, this one actually made it easier to navigate and faster. Though admittedly this is because the old one wasn't exactly the best but hey, a win is a win.

Beat Sin & Punishment 2. Yeah this is the best action game I've ever played and a new 10 for me. Even without beating the final boss on Hard (and honestly I might never be able to do it cause fucking christ it's demented) this is still a masterpiece in my eyes.

Also took me way too long to realize that if S&P1 is Evangelion inspired, then 2 is just Eureka Seven with the female lead being a humanoid monster and the whole sky surfing aspect.

Got all the way through to the final boss in Sin & Punishment 2 on Hard and yeah I have throw in the towel. This shit is fucking impossible. Will have to restart on Medium now to actually finish the game. And yet it's so mindblowingly good that I'm barely irked by this.

Well, the early buzz coming out of Venice Film Festival and now TIFF indicates that Lee Chang Dong's new film, Possible Love, is another home run from him. Hopefully this isn't just festival hype getting to critics heads but considering Lee's output I'd imagine it isn't. The master is back baybee.

Thinking about Pauline Kael's quote on experimental cinema ("a creature of publicity and mutual congratulations on artistry") and how it basically fits the circle jerk that is the arcade gaming community.

Well, time to see if this game is actually any good or if it's another "Yeah bro, this game was too cool for America, so I had to import it" game.

Okay I have to hand it to Elevator Action for this. Watching two enemies argue amongst themselves over who gets to control the elevator is some Looney Tunes shit.

It's much easier to laugh at or feel superior to a caricature than feel with a character. For isn't the essence, the defining quality of a caricature, that it tells us how to react? It's a character with the responses built in. (1962)

For as much as the missions in Xeno X can lead to memorable moments, I can't say they do a good job of integrating the open world. Too often they just tell you which zone to go to without specific direction & so you just rely on that tracking ball. In this regard, BOTW is/was a major step up.

Having seen how every Skell controls so differently in their vehicule form, it's crazy that its Xenoblade 1 that now has a racing mini-game but not X.

God damn it Ikuhara, make another show and I'll come out of anime retirement.

He's studied Great Filmmaking and the manner and style of Great filmmakers; and he's tried to boil it down to its essence without making films that make dudes spend a lot of time thinking about their feelings. There is no love in his films, it is only useful as a plot device.

So I'm like 15 hours into Xenoblade X DE and one of the many things that's struck me is how unnatural the platforming is (in a good way). The geometry doesn't feel handcrafted for you to jump against the side of the larger hills, making it an ambiguous obstacle where you get to test the limits of...

what the platforming will allow. Makes an interesting comparison with BOTW's climbing which is more nakedly mechanical and though I am ashamed to admit it, it did make me think of Electric Underground's video on SMART vs DUMB design.

My mind has been so coked-up on De Palma films recently that I've come to the conclusion that the Hunter X Hunter episode that's entirely in slow-mo is the most De Palma thing not made by De Palma.
