In Honduras, maize prices are up 67% in a year due to El Niño failed crops. The FAO-WFP early-action appeal for El Niño was $167M short of its $202M goal at launch. Grains are super expensive for low and middle income countries! www.4hunger.org/p/the-grain-...

Food banks run on diesel trucks. Diesel hit a record $6.53 a gallon on September 21. Greater Boston Food Bank's chief operating officer put it: "If I am spending more on fuel, I can't buy as much food." Every extra dollar for fuel is a dollar not spent on food, 4hunger.org

This El Niño just broke the ocean temperature record. Heat alone could kill 451,000 people by February, before counting a single death from hunger. The UN has a plan to protect 8.8 million people before their harvests fail. Only one government has funded it, with about $3 million.

El Niño is causing floods, droughts, fires and smoke around the world. Governments are not mobilizing humanitarian aid to help people follow with the hunger and devastation that accompanies these.

“If the temperature of the Pacific were the variable that decided the death toll, 2027 would be catastrophic beyond any precedent. It has no connection to the Pacific at all, it will be whether governments help the people that 150 years of El Niño records say will suffer from hunger.”

The human numbers are already on the record, before a seed is in the ground. Famine Early Warning Systems Network expects delayed and below-average rains to cut planting and crops. The African Development Bank has put the cost of this El Niño to affected African economies at up to $20 billion.

Nineteen African Countries Have Already Lost a Harvest to This El Niño; Europe Devastated By Climate www.4hunger.org/p/nineteen-a... 49 million people around the world will be forced into acute hunger by this El Niño, there is still time to save crops in Africa, Asia and the Americas if we act now.

4hunger.orgNineteen African Countries Have Already Lost a Harvest to This El Niño; Europe Devastated By ClimateIn June, the UN asked for $202 million to protect these harvests before they fail. Less than 20% of that money has been found, and no government has announced a contribution earmarked to the appeal.

Half of the population of the Earth lives in Asia and grows their own food. Whether tens of millions of people experience food shortages from the Super El Niño depends on the harvest of crops that haven’t been planted yet an on whether countries impose export bans.

Record soybean crop arriving late is the mechanism by which the safrinha maize is lost, rather than a separate risk, is the sharpest move in the piece. There is a deadline on anticipatory action: it is fixed by the planting window, not by the drought index. What happens to crops next is the key!

El Niño Has Landed: The Rain That Has Already Failed in Sudan open.substack.com/pub/markrobe... 4Hunger.org told you that El Niño was being predicted in advance. First in a series following the sun seeing the damage El Niño is doing 7 months out from its maximum. Today Sudan, next week the Americas!

open.substack.comEl Niño Has Landed: The Rain That Has Already Failed in SudanLast week this publication showed that the hunger of 2027 is being forecast in public, on a schedule, by governments that anyone can read for free. Those forecasts have started becoming reality.

open.substack.com/pub/markrobe... Two-degrees is will be a reality, sooner than was predicted a couple years ago! This year we had two famines and four countries near famine, 1.4 million people in the most severe stage of hunger where people starve to death!will be much worse in a two-degree world.

open.substack.comHunger At The 2°C Dinner Table2°C redraws the map of hunger when it arrives 20 years earlier than the IPCC said it would, and why starvation toll is still a policy choice.

Sanders: The irony is that the proper criticism of communism is that the Soviet Union was an authoritarian society.  And then you’ve got the most authoritarian president in the history of this country. So I suppose when he says, “I’d be a great communist,” yeah, I think there’s some truth to that

“A drought you can see coming for months. A heat wave you can see coming only for days. By the time you can feel it, the pollen is already dead, the milk has already stopped, and the forecast of food production for the season has already dropped precipitously.”

Wheat that stops growing at 27 degrees; dairy cows simply stop making milk due to the heat; cornfields are cooked in a heat dome; One climate driver arrives without a forecast, in hours, not seasons, single most devastating climate variable standing between the world and its next hunger crisis.

A season of record heat, drought, and marine warming is straining the people who grow and catch the nation's food and adversely impacting the nation’s food supply, just as the federal government is removing America’s food safety net.

In the most recent global accounting, more than 266 million people across 47 countries were in crisis or beyond, nearly a quarter of every population that analysts were able to measure. The number of people at the very edge, at emergency-levels of hunger, has nearly tripled since 2016.
