He can just be the loyal friend to Stolas that he was always meant to be. People have said before that Stolas can use Vassago to reconnect with Via, but he won't have to. Vassago will gladly do it as a friend, no ulterior motives necessary. Because Via is his friend's happiness.

Mind you, I don't think any of this bars the possibility of Stolago or Stolizgo. I just think this is the cleanest way a change of dynamic/relationship for Stolas and Vassago would happen.

He'll see that Stolas is working toward all the things he never had before on his own now. He'll see that Stolas has someone he really loves and who loves him. And Vassago will realize that was all he really wanted for Stolas to begin with. That's why he'll be okay with not being chosen.

Maybe he just wants so badly for Stolas to be happy and free that his affection comes out like romantic love. This is someone he thinks he can save and very clearly wants to save. And maybe he doesn't realize himself yet that these feelings aren't what he's thought they were since he was a teenager

He hasn't realized yet that Stolas doesn't need to be saved. Helped, yes, but not rescued. He doesn't need to be found, he needs self acceptance. He's not alone anymore, he's building his friendships. Vassago will inevitably see that Stolas doesn't need him to solve all his problems for him anymore

So I've seen the discussion on Vassago as a finder of lost things, treasure, and having strongly to do with friendships (paraphrasing) Here's Stolas, a friend he values highly and who appears to be lost in the life designed for him. Someone he sees suffering and suppressing his real self.

On the one hand, I wish I had prime so I could watch the new eps when most everyone else is... On the other, I am a spiteful shit and crave the downfall of Bezos specifically. It's a difficult place to be in. But at least the hellaverse teams can still get my money when I buy official merch.
