“The end of acute infection is not necessarily the end of the disease”. I very much appreciate this comment in Nature highlighting the role of infectious disease in the development or exacerbation of chronic disease. Vaccines can prevent chronic diseases, which is often overlooked.

A large study of 315,612 people found Long COVID was linked to a higher risk of heart, kidney and lung problems across all ages. Risk was especially high in younger adults, particularly young women for heart and kidney problems, and young men for pulmonary outcomes. Published: 20 August 2026
