#ActuallyAutistic folk, you know that moment when you see someone smirk at your distress from a trigger and you know they're your enemy. I wish I'd been taught this as a child. It could have saved me a lot of trouble in later life.

HR departments work to protect their company and managers from litigation when there is an Equality Act breach. Once they find out an employee is neurodivergent they weaponise this against them. Ethics don't come into it. #autism #actuallyautistic #neurodiversity

They lie that reasonable adjustments are in place but they're not. They claim things that are universally available for everyone are an accommodation for a neurodivergent individual. They cherry pick from Occupational Health reports or even challenge the health assessor.

They insist on a diagnosis to consider any support at all (Needs-led isn't going to work). They ignore all about the employee's neurodivergence which is good for the company. Worst, riding off the back of ableism, they frame EVERYTHING around the employee being neurodivergent as the problem.

Taking things people say at face value then finding out they didn't mean what they said makes autistic people untrusting of others and doubting every move they make. We're disadvantaged in the workplace when this happens. An accommodation is to say what you mean.

The deafening silence following the #Fonagy report by some who were very vocal against diagnoses. Their lack of calling out the media for its gross misrepresentation. They didn't know the strength of feeling. Too scared to speak out now.... or smug victory? #autism #ADHD #neurodiversity

Just as society gets more and more demanding, powers decide not to identify folk who fare worse off. Autistic and ADHDers, Early support is promised without diagnosis. Whether that will be enough for neurodivergent people across the lifespan remains to be seen.

It's a huge gamble but when it fails it'll be neurodivergent people and their families who will have to pick up the pieces. I'm so worried for folk who need support but will just be expected to just get on with it like everyone else because there'll be no funding for early support.

If those policy makers had an autistic or ADHD child, I wonder if they'd be absolutely certain their needs would be met for life without a diagnosis. I think not. I bet they'd be first in the queue for a diagnostic assessment.

Marginalised people who are protected by the Equality Act can face resentment from colleagues at work. They think we have an unfair advantage and 'play the disability/race card'. The reality is that under-employment, discrimination and harassment are far greater than is ever reported.

Exactly this. The Needs-led model doesn't give vulnerable people legal protection. Employers and schools will have even more of an excuse for not making reasonable adjustments. Accommodations will be seen as optional where funding is short. It's extremely naive to think Needs-led is a solution.

Mental Health Review report. I can't imagine how it feels for autistic & ADHDers & their families on the waiting list right now or seeking an assessment. The gov't is removing legal protection for masses at all ages. We need to be vocal when the Needs-led approach doesn't work. #neurodiversity

Mental Health Review Report: "Increasing participation in relationships, education, work, family and community life should be a central outcome and measure of success." Agree, but by which criteria? Success for one may be harmful to another. Risk of neuro-normativity national standards here.

Watching Celebrity Traitors I'm clueless about their intentions and motives. I have to ask my partner to explain it and watch Uncloaked. Makes me realise how vulnerable we are in competitive environments and why we get eaten alive in the workplace. #autism #actuallyautistic

Support for autism and ADHD isn't just about practical things and self- awareness. A diagnosis helps (or should help) friends, family, colleagues, teachers understand reasons for behaviour so *they* can adjust their expectations and own behaviour. This improves relationships.

'Neurodivergent' is a useful umbrella term to describe ppl who's processing doesn't fit the neuromajority. But using it atm resources are being provided misses nuances in support needs. Those who want labels dropped use it so they don't have to say autism/ADHD. Hijacking the neurodiversity movement🙄

You are up to date.
