In my [REDACTED] year of #iteachmath. The way I teach ≠ the way I was taught. Wondering if #mtbos should now be #mbbos. May also find me talking about photography, the outdoors, traveling, sports, SF, & hanging with my kids. Not necessarily in that order.

Big news for me, #iteachmath friends. After 25 years in the classroom, I've started a job as a math coach for Innovamat, a pretty new curriculum in the US market. 😯 1 week in & I've already had the pleasure of visiting 5 classrooms at 2 schools, & interacting with ~40 additional Ts in PD sessions.

Shopping at Best Buy should be an automatic deal-breaker for being elected President. "As someone who lives near a Best Buy, I'm at Best Buy often," Newsom told reporters during a news conference. Gavin Newsom Proposes a California Digital Software Tax - share.google/SvZsvFYrhgoZ...

The Democrats and Republicans are playing a game of basketball, except the Democrats only get to put 4 players on the court, they only get 1 point for field goals, and in the off-season the refs go on luxury vacations with--and paidfor by--the Republicans. (Is this talking like normal people?)

I'm confused why chat gpt can't just replicate Canvas in a few hours, including making sure everyone's stuff is still there. Just ask it to do this for us and not make any mistakes, right? (I'm not confused)

This is the first time in quite some time that I have no idea who I'm going to vote for in an election that is a month away, and this CA governor debate isn't helping me so far. 🤷‍♂️

Is this what Obama means by telling Dems to talk more like normal people? Leave erudite talk of academic concepts like kindness, empathy, and fairness to the dusty halls of elite college seminar rooms?

Fox News hosts are now openly advocating for little kids to be mocked on the school playground if they are overweight - essentially saying it should be public policy. "It is a part of the MAHA movement, this is part of the, a central part of the MAHA movement." www.mediamatters.org/fox-news/dis...

Teachers, imagine a (very hypothetical) tool that gives students and teachers quick, accurate, equitable, and high quality feedback to a wide-range of question and answer types. As much as grading sucks, do you think we would we lose something by not going through the slow, human grading process?

Oh, this is all my fault. I forgot to begin my question with the brilliant prompt making the rounds. With that fixed, I get this lovely tidbit. "The Continental United States: Geographically, this includes Alaska because it is on the North American continent, but excludes Hawaii." 😂😂😂

I wonder if there's some universe where a Broken Calculator puzzle posed by a math teacher inspired the EML function.

Since @eluberoff.bsky.social asked last week (sort of), two Desmos calculator features I think would lead to some good play: 1. The ability to create a custom calculator by inserting or removing keys (eg broken calc puzzles) 2. The ability to create/save new construction "tools" in the toolbar

Imagine a grocery store with no prices on anything. You can stand in a separate line to get an estimate of how much your food for the week will cost, and you are told that it will greatly depend on your membership level. Instead of paying on your way out, you get a bill in the mail a month later.

A grocery store with this business model would never make it, yet this pretty much describes the norm in healthcare. My story happens to currently be about Kaiser, but in my experience this is typical for any healthcare in the US. It's bananas that this is legal, never mind acceptable.

Surprisingly, this bill is for twice as much as you were quoted when you were in the store. There are no details, and you have to go back to to the store to see how much each individual item costs. Even then, though, you are just given the SKU for each item, not an understandable description.

Sadly, this didn't seem to hurt Hertz's bottom line. It probably helps them that every single car rental agency is a complete mess.

The below image is fake. This is frustrating bc we have to be skeptical of everything, to think hard about moon phases & corresponding "Earth phases", to look closely & recognize half of Africa is missing. So when we do see an amazing image of space (there are lots!), we can't just enjoy it.

I'm job hunting for positions outside the classroom, casting a wide net, & I'd estimate at least half the jobs that come across my LinkedIn feed have AI components in the job description and/or organization.

If anyone hears of a position to try and crack the problem of how best to teach people to avoid falling into this type of trap (never mind the plethora of other ethical and moral considerations), ***that*** is an AI related job I'd be interested in.

An AI generated tl;dr summary omits the father/son tension central to the piece &, ironically, just below a section on hallucinations, spits out "[Some doctors] are beginning to 'prescribe' AI tools or prompts to help patients stay informed." No semblance of this statement appears in the article.

Saw the play The Monsters at Berkeley Rep last night, which has been aptly described as "hits hard and hugs harder." Ngozi Anyanwu (also the playwright) & Sullivan Jones were incredible in physically and mentally demanding roles, and I left wanting to just go home and cuddle with my 7-year old boy.

I'd love some data to do some testing on a project I'm working on. Reach out if you have questions.

Pretty sure I remember in the not so distant past Republicans calling for resignations over dropping the F bomb, and that wasn't even in the context of dropping real bombs and openly threatening war crimes.

Today's Supreme Court ruling conflating medical (mal)practice as free speech is one of the worst decisions of my lifetime, a lifetime that includes Bush v Gore.

Setting aside my rant about teeth & eyes apparently not being part of our bodies: just got a dental bill for a routine cleaning for the kids, and they charged for a tooth extraction when the 10yo's very loose tooth fell out while the hygienist was flossing. Health care in this country is bananas.
