That saying it's a revision dramatically changes the results shows that the models are not doing what they appear to be doing. The solution, seems to me, is models that do less. Like a grammar checker, a math checker, a citation checker, a plagiarism checker. Not a model that loves Shakespeare.

Yeah, no. Not at all. Not even close.

@frankfukuyama.bsky.social says people developing AI are increasingly less like engineers and more like scientists studying something they don't fully understand: “A lot of contemporary computer scientists working on AI are more like biologists who've suddenly encountered this new species.”

Stop trying to make LLMs a mystery. LLMs are computer programs. Comparing them to working with living organisms is betraying your ignorance of living organisms.

It is a depressing sign of the times that Marjorie Taylor Greene has come out more forcefully against the Trump administration trying to strip Ilhan Omar of her citizenship than the Democratic Party or any major newspaper.

If Bayern defense keeps playing the way they have these last 2 games and they indeed may be in the market for some new CBs in January.

Never mind, looks like VAR took the second goal away. Barca fans can breathe - but that defense looking a little suspect at the moment, no?

Oh, geez, Galatasaray are 2 up on Barcelona already. What in the world is going on? Galatasaray is a good team but they are 1/3 of the value of the Barca squad.

A few months ago, I heard something similar about the NIH (even high level institute staff were uncertain as to who is making the funding decisions). Who is making federal funding decisions????

"NSF doesn't appear to have much agency now" (surprised they answered this). Still funding good science despite fewer awards. Need community to continue to propose good ideas.

Trying to follow Bosnia v Sweden on Fotmob so caught the glimpse of what is going on in the Poland v Romania game - that red card against Romania might be the worst call I have ever seen.

Just catching up on the after the Bosnia-Sweden game. Huge props to Sweden who came to win, came knowing it would be tough, but still showed huge class by not only stopping the game to say goodbye to Dzeko but also gifting him with a Sweden national jersey signed by all their players.

In the most Bosnian way possible, Sarajevo is saying goodbye to Dzeko by its cevabcinice selling the "11" of cevapi as opposed to the classic 5 or 10.

I'm having a lot of very mixed emotions about the whole thing. Dzeko belongs to my generation of Bosnian kids who grew up in the war. War children. It is what it is. Everyone else left on the team are too young to carry those burdens.

I need more physician scientists to absorb this message. Do not put your data into any LLM system.

The obvious conclusion (to me): if you have proprietary research & you upload it into the Plagiarism Nexus, it's not YOUR proprietary research anymore. Behave accordingly.

And I am not trying to pick on phys scientists I just think that due to the varying institutional expectations, the pull on their time is great and they can easily succumb to the promises of LLMs

I can't watch the Bosnia v Poland game on TV but I am following it on Fotmob and all I can say is that we really miss Dedic.

Game over, 0-0. Looks like we're still relying on our defense to bail us out and hope that someone pulls a rabbit out of the hat offensively. So frustrating because Sergej was an offensive player his whole career so you would think there would be more creativity on the offensive side of the ball

We have a reasonable assortment of offensive weapons but it doesn't escape me that the equalizer against Italy came from a Dedic cross into the box. Trying to replace Dedic with a centerback was a bad idea. Just play Malic for goodness sake, at least he knows the position.

Got an email that a client just got two NOAs today (two different ICs). Going to turn off my computer and end the day on a high note.

But if you’re in the field you’re in the ‘most effecient way to teach fractions business’, not the ‘fix all of society’ business. You gotta focus on the problem that’s actually tractable and within the scope of what you can a-dress.

At this point I will pay people to stop writing/saying "precision medicine" as if it means anything. This term is a product of MBA-fication of biomedicine and it needs to be shunned from our vocabulary.

This is not to hate on all MBAs, I am sure there has been some general usefulness that has come of out MBAs for the economy, but honestly, if someone banned MBAs from working in medicine, I wouldn't be mad. 🤷‍♀️

A big week for the lab! Two new papers on how cells repair DNA double-strand breaks: one on getting NHEJ started in chromatin, one on processing the ends before ligation. Years of work by a fantastic team.

Looks like Dedic is out for the international matches too. Good for him (so he can recover properly), bad for the national team. His most likely replacement is Malic, who I like but is likely still too green. Not sure this bodes very well for Bosnia's matches.

The "massive weekly grocery haul" is a symptom of car-dependent sprawl, not a universal rule of life. Healthy cities don't force you to drive to a warehouse store. Good design makes grabbing fresh food a quick, passive part of your daily walk or bike commute. These straw men arguments bore me.

Try buying a family's week's worth of groceries and then taking the bus home.

Just realized I can't watch #lufc vs #nufc on Peacock. How in the world did USA swindle European football associations into signing up exclusive games to them? No one in the US has that network!

Ugh, this topic is so near and dear to my heart. Yes to homework. Yes to textbooks. Yes to notebooks and handwriting and blue books for exams. No to early grade tech, no to youtube videos and websites as knowledge sources, no to freewheeling curriculums.

At one point last year, we got accused by his honors math teacher of doing his homework for him at home. I mean, imagine! Thankfully his MAP scores arrived 2 weeks later and after that, she had nothing but great things to say about him. 🙄

And given that we have an older son who codes as a traditionally smart kid, watching up close and personal how differently the two are treated by their teachers is a daily reminder of how much bias remains in education.

My youngest has ADHD and an unusual personality/interests - so he never codes as "smart" to either kids or teachers. Every year we go through the same thing where his honors teachers don't think he belongs in honors classes.

And inevitably, their opinion runs straight into his annual MAP scores (and his previous CogAt scores). And by the end of the year, they gush about what a great student he is and "how far he has come." Nah, he didn't change, they just realized that being smart and presenting smart are not the same

But I will push back against anti-standardized testing messages. I don't think standardized tests are be all and end all. But bias in K-12 is so pervasive that sometimes you need the test to identify kids who are smart but don't present as such.
