war mongers and war criminals endorsing each other again? how shocking. and at the root of it all, arrogance

it's happening again: the writing deadline for the study-book is getting closer and i do everything to procrastinate. mostly reading novels :) it's time to get the click counter out to help me stay focused #academicsky

i try to remember Thoreau's quote often: "as if you could kill time without injuring eternity" trying to kill time, whilst time is killing us anyway, on to writing...

ok, new strategy: allow the distraction, but limit its time for me the current distraction is watching cat, cleaning, or cat cleaning videos on YouTube. i allow the distraction, but set a timer to 10 minutes and come back to my writing

they say we are oppressed and then start oppressing us. the same thing happening again and again in Türkiye, in Cyprus, in Azerbaijan, and now in Europe too. i wish politicians would leave us alone already #handsoffwomenschoices

Explainer | Why are schoolchildren protesting a hijab ban in Azerbaijan? ⭕ The protests against the hijab ban in schools appear to be some of the largest public demonstrations in years.

it's the end of the hazelnut harvest season in Türkiye and the stink bugs are invading the village again. hopefully, they will be gone by next year, because farmers report yield losses of up to 40% time for us to go back to the city

reading 1984 in this day and age was a mistake. even ten years ago, it would have hit differently... more like dystopian fiction rather than a roadmap. thankfully, i came across an article pointing out that the use of past tense in the appendix could be a sign that the Party eventually died #booksky

Two hours in Vienna. One train stopover. Instead of sitting on the platform, we borrowed shared bikes and pedalled the length of Argentinierstraße: Vienna’s first Dutch-style fietsstraat; where cars are guests and bikes set the pace. Sometimes you don't need a whole day to discover a city by bike.

first September in a long long time that i have no lectures scheduled (they'll start in the new year). it feels weird. might organize a few free bootcamps just to get over it :) #academicsky

if all goes well, i might become the owner of this beauty by Monday #baaTheWanneBeBuilder there are so many things to do/fix with the help of this at the House of Wrong Angles

i keep going to the pool, but: need to conquer my fear of water to learn to swim; need to learn to swim to conquer my fear of water. infinite loop or is there hope, i wonder :)

maybe there is hope after all. i feel like i made some real progress yesterday. we'll see if it was real, next time

turns out the progress was real. i guess i can swim now. yay! the only problem is that i cannot come up for air :) for now, i have to walk/bounce away from the edge of the pool and swim the length i can hold my breath for towards the edge. learning to breath will be the task for next year

a few pages in and i think as a non-native speaker there is no chance for me to understand Finnegan's wake #booksky

grading the last papers from this semester i notice that i can't make the ends of a zero meet and suddenly remember that my teacher in first or second grade made me write pages and pages of 0's and o's to change that. apparently it didn't work #academicsky

came home after a few weeks in the wilderness to find that the fuse blew who knows when and everything in the freezer and fridge rotted and oozed out onto the floor. the smell was horrible!! we cleaned the fridge, but i don't think it will ever smell neutral again. so, we need to get a new fridge

the road noise is irritating me more than usual lately. maybe the truck traffic has increased or something. glad that the weather is good enough to escape to the village for a while

it was plastering day at the House of Wrong Angles. almost finished one room, but the plaster dried out mid-work. tomorrow's another day... hope my wrists hold up :)

did i say almost finished? hah! who would've thought plastering was this difficult. layers upon layers. and then one packet turned out to have black pigments in them that were revealed only when applied on the wall. no idea how that's even possible... wrists are fine though, so that's nice

currently reading George Orwell's "Keep the Aspidistra Flying". not sure how it is going to end, but enjoying quotes like these #booksky

finished reading Middlemarch. most characters were believable, some were relatable, and a few over-the-top dramatic. the storylines were nicely connected, but very drawn out. it felt like the author too was tired and wrote an abrupt ending. i for one, was certainly ready for it to end

but, it is full of quotable sentences for all kinds of situations/fields. which would explain its popularity. here is one for academics #academicsky

last lectures of the semester done ✅ it is again the students' turn to be stressed. hope they fare well at the finals
