Hasan has Matthew Sullivan dead to rights here. LBJ told confidants that civil rights would cost Dems the south for 20-30 years. (It's 60 & counting, because GOP catered to racists.) Sullivan claims it isn't the same. But he says that because history has spoken & he has no smarmy counter-argument.

Mehdi Hasan@mehdirhasan.bsky.social

“The Matthew Yglesias of 1963 would have been telling [JFK and LBJ] don’t touch this civil rights bill. It’s unpopular.” I thought this was one of the more fascinating exchanges with @mattyglesias.bsky.social, on how far politicians defer to public opinion. Full interview: zeteo.com/p/matt-ygles...

In the 1930's, Matthew Sullivan would have argued that Nazism was popular, & Germany's economy was rebounding. In 1860, he would have insisted that opposing slavery would destroy the union. Sullivan would have opposed Women's Suffrage-- just like he opposes gay rights & immigration.

People who push "Popularism" on the grounds that they're being pragmatic & that you can't force change on large blocs who oppose it ALWAYS end up standing in the schoolhouse door. No major change has been universally popular. They never see themselves as being bigot. They just "have questions".

TRANSLATION: Matthew Sullivan would be much happier if he could point to elections in Brazil & Serbia as proof that progressives are out of step with a worldwide consensus that 'we' need to move right. Sullivan is never happy when any election is resolved to the left of his worldview.

Two of the characters in THE BIG BANG THEORY (the most popular show on TV for a decade) were waitresses at the Cheesecake Factory. The others ate there weekly. Funny how all the people claiming jokes ragging on it are elitist don't know this. (PS for David Brooks: it also has no salad bar.)

The COLUMBUS DISGRACE (as locals forced to endure it call it) might be America's worst newspaper. Think the MANCHESTER UNION-LEADER under William Loeb, or Colonel McCormick's CHICAGO TRIBUNE ("Dewey Defeats Truman"). Naturally they endorsed Ramaswamy. If they've flipped, it shows how toxic he is.

Why is it that everyone who knows the facts about Theranos & Elizabeth Madoff Holmes doesn't feel there's more to the story than people think? Is a puzzlement... Lopatto also offers the most logical theory I've read about why Holmes chooses lovers who are sharks.

Another person who is a legitimate Subject Matter Expert about Theranos & Elizabeth Madoff Holmes (whistleblower Tyler Shultz) watches "You Can See Everything" & is exasperated by its presentation of a liar & crook as quirky & complex.

statnews.comI was a Theranos whistleblower. In ‘You Can See Everything,’ Elizabeth Holmes is still lyingA more accurate name would be “You Can See Everything That We Chose To Point The Camera At,”Theranos whistleblower Tyler Shultz writes.

Two friends were told the same thing. One was re-diagnosed with MS years later, one died of a mystery ailment. Both were constantly told "We know best. What you believe (or are feeling) isn't important." I know these are tough cases. Given that, maybe doctors should be less cocksure.

variety.comChristina Applegate Reveals She Was Misdiagnosed With MS: ‘I’m Back at Square One’ and It’s a ‘Mindf—’Christina Applegate returned to her podcast, "MeSsy," on Tuesday with some shocking news: She was misdiagnosed with MS.

A big reason hucksters like RFK get traction is that US medicine insists it is never wrong. In many cases (not all) that's incorrect. I found out, after 6 years of feeling bad, my heart surgery hadn't been done well. Family members have been misprescribed. It's difficult to get issues redressed.

After something bad happens, even new doctors feel the slate should always be wiped clean-- that any future skepticism or reluctance to agree to future treatment is outrageous & inappropriate. That patients pay the bills-- that we receive the consequences-- rarely gets factored in.

The odds are these two stories are not linked-- Occam's Razor would say the most likely explanation is coincidence. Also, there's the "post hoc, ergo propter hoc" fallacy. What one may reasonably assume is that this sort of thing can now be done easily, & that the next instance might be deliberate.

theguardian.comNot cool: who hacked France’s supermarket fridges?Whether it was youngsters proving their skills or state sabotage, Europe’s most hacked country was left with a mountain of waste after food began cooking in freezers

I'd like to sere a presidential hopeful announce that, if elected, Stephen Miller and Tom Homan will be denaturalized & deported, due to their status as domestic terrorists. Since "Little Marco" and Elon Terre'Blanche entered the country illegally, they'll merely be deported.

The latest insight from Jim Matalin-- husband of longtime GOP apparatchik Mary. As @nathansnewman.bsky.social notes, the acid test of what he calls a 'centrist' (I'd call them DINOs or revanchists) is whether they'd prefer to have the right win an upcoming election instead of someone left.

🤔 James Carville: “I’d rather Republicans keep the house by 5 than Dems win by 5… Because then they’re hostage to DSA, and Hakeem can’t move.” 😬Bill Kristol: “Good point.” So afraid of DSA folks who want M4ALL, etc. they’d rather Republicans hold power. Unreal. True colors.

I worked in California during '00-01, when rolling blackouts were common. *EVERYONE* was expected to suffer. They'd shut down the grid during lunch hours-- so restaurants had to close. But closing data centers? Even just restricting the flow a bit? That's unconstitutional. Or communism.

Tommy is the most authentic "Man of the People" I have seen since "Samuel J. Wurzelbacher, Unlicensed Home Improvement Guy." Good to see El-Sayed avoid kowtowing to him the way John McCain & Barack Obama did.

Abdul El-Sayed@abdulelsayed.bsky.social

This is Tommy. Tommy had a question about my allegiances. Listen to the end to hear about his.

Here's a shock: He's a right-wing operative. Marisa Kabas (as is often the case) has the scoop. It's not shocking news. As was the case with the equally bogus "Joe the Plumber", these guys always make it clear, in the course of their attacks, that they're not dealing in good faith.

thehandbasket.co'Tommy' from viral El-Sayed video is former Sen. Hawley staffer with Christian nationalist tiesThomas Teepell is the son of a former long-time Bobby Jindal staffer who's close to Sean Feucht.

FINALLY, we have a review of the Elizabeth Holmes-Madoff doc written by someone who knows the case and the subject. John Carreyrou, the two-time Pulitzer winner who blew the whistle on Theranos, sees this project as another con attempt by the subjects, which the filmmakers convey, but don't enable.

nytimes.comThe Reporter Who Exposed Elizabeth Holmes on Nathan Fielder’s DocumentaryMs. Holmes handed the makers of “You Can See Everything” — and the rest of the world — a microscope with which to observe and dissect her lies.

This conduct is the ne plus ultra of Emperor Trump (and his MAGA minions) hurling verbal abuse on them, locking them out & calling the pigs to remove them. Never any tangible resistance to the behavior-- even though the media could easily escalate It's hard to feel any sympathy for them.

When Dem elites support an independent candidate over Team D's nominee , they're saying one of two things: 1) We believe Team D's brand is so toxic that no nominee can win, or 2) we don't care about the process (or the voters who chose the nominee). Neither encourages voters to support Team D.

Saying "This election is crucial-- we must play these kinds of games" is how Team D has marginalized itself in most states. "Let's not worry about building the party-- let's just try to win this election" is what Team D does in every cycle. How well has that short-term thinking worked?

Alani Bankhead has no chance to win ($22K in the bank at last filing). She has some similarities to Tulsi Scattered. But how do you expect to build a party if you give candidates the Rod Steiger speech ("Sorry kid-- it ain't your night") every time you think and Indy might win?

"R" Kurt Alme polls at 42%. Bodnar 27% & Bankhead 18%. The belief that Bodnar picks up ALL of Bankhead's votes, at which point 62% of the undecideds (13%) break for Bodnar is a pipe dream. If you want to rebuild a party-- as opposed to win ONE race, tanking for Bodnar-- isn't the way you do it.

Expressing moral outrage at someone's heinous behavior sounds phony if you make it clear (as Chuck Schumer & most of Team D do) that you're playing to the crowd or the media. You can't call someone a monster if you imply that you can "move forward" if they say they're sorry & try to make amends.

Ossoff is acting like Trump/MAGA/GOP and what they’ve done to the country is Actually Bad. Charismatic and well spoken, which sure helps. But no “my friends across the aisle,” no acting like the imaginary “Baileys” are the only ones who matter, no “don’t talk values, only kitchen table.” That’s it.

You can see the difference when Schumer attacks BDS or IDF war crimes. Or Any Klobuchar rejects regulating the police. Or Cory Booker denounces tech regulation. Nothing matters as much to Hakeem Jeffries as eliminating limits on corporations. You can't disguise that with presentation techniques.

When Jon Ossoff condemns Trump or Mike Collins, he leaves the impression that he doesn't care if saying it is "good politics" or not. He's doing it because he believes it is right. Good consultants learn you can't fake sincerity. If it isn't what you really think, it always sounds phony.

This is a terrible sign; it shows how corrupt & rotted-out the US economy has become. But remember that David Ellison has destroyed CBS-- the only unanswered question is "How badly will he ruin the prime-time lineup?" The same thing will happen to these properties.

FactPost@factpostnews.bsky.social

Paramount has closed its $81 billion merger with Warner Bros. Discovery. Billionaire David Ellison now controls: —CNN —CBS —HBO —Paramount —Warner Bros —Discovery —Skydance —Showtime —DC Studios —Nickelodeon —Cartoon Network —Food Network —MTV —Comedy Central —HGTV —TBS —TLC

It's not just that David is an imbecile-- that he accomplished nothing other than being born to the right father. He's loaded down with debt. The economy is going south & the AI bubble will burst. He'll end up selling all these properties. He'll have to. Capable people could rebuild them.

What's sad: Ellison's discarded assets won't have the synergy & clout they used to. Most will be stripped and sold to hacks. Even well-meaning buyers won't be old enough to remember what these dinosaurs were once like. We'll be left with what the current-day Yahoo or The Atlantic have become.

Although, after the Ellisons' debt load blows up-- forcing them to sell many assets at bargain prices (possibly at inopportune times) -- their media empire will be only half-vast...

The thing that will decide our future is the amount of pressure we apply to our leaders after the 2026 & 2028 elections. Team D loves to say "Chill out-- we've got this. We'll fix things if you shut up & let us play eleventy-dimensional chess. Wasn't true when Clinton said it. Or Obama. Or Biden.

If reform doesn't proceed at DOGE speed-- if the Neo-Times & Amazon Post aren't constantly railing about leftist overreach-- the things that need to be done won't get done. If Matt Yglesias, Jon Shite & pundit Nate Silver aren't constantly fulminating, it's a sign we're going too slow.

People should read media coverage of the New Deal. Spoiler Alert: it wasn't generous or admiring. 1930's media wasn't nearly as polarized as the current one. The VRWC will come out solidly opposed on all fronts. Team D must be willing to run roughshod over opposition-- not try to work with it.

Or Obama. Or Biden.

The attitude people take toward leaders must be "You've fucked up our mandates too many times before. You ALL have track records-- and they are, without exception, terrible. "We cannot assume you know better. Or that you mean well. Or that you can be trusted. The stakes are too high this time."

Team D will want to go slowly. To ask their elite backers for advice, & pick strategies that offend them least. They'll want to give David Brooks &Jimmy Matalin line-item vetoes-- & constantly see how it plays in the media & in polls. (Especially CBS & CNN.) If that happens, we're cooked.

Buried in this whinging is a tangible point: Governors can have huge impacts on state-- and ultimately-- national policy. The writer doesn't think it's the DNC's job (or DGA's) to make that case to them. Stupid voters should just grasp it. Would that be best use of their money? He doesn't say.

politico.comDemocrats Are Underfunding the Races That Could Remake the MapDemocratic donors are pouring money into Senate races as Republicans build an advantage in gubernatorial contests that could shape the party’s future.

The pitch is severely undercut by making David Jolly the poster boy. Another 'R' turned 'D' who claims he's changed positions on all the things he used to espouse. Maybe he has-- but how much of your money would you spend trying to make someone who changed parties governor?

Astonishing incompetence-- both by Trump's political operation & the media. Navistar didn't just fire 1,341 workers. They filed a WARN notice with the State of Ohio in JULY. Federal law requires employers to give 90-day notice of mass layoffs . Who holds a rally right as the cuts take effect?

apnews.comA gut punch in Ohio: Nearly 1,400 laid off at truck factory just days before Trump rallyPresident Donald Trump is trying to rally voters in the Dayton, Ohio, area on Saturday. But days ago, 1,400 workers were laid off from a truck factory there.

Here's the story from three months ago. The notice arrived July 28. I can't believe the media has presenting the layoffs as a sudden decision that blindsided these poor MAGAs. Everyone involved knew. A proper story filed now would address how many people will be rehired after Roshel takes over.

daytondailynews.comInternational Motors files WARN notice on layoffs of 1,341 Springfield workersInternational Motors LLC announced the layoff of 1,341 employees at two Springfield plants following the sale of its assets to Canadian manufacturer Roshel, with closures expected by October and union...

One possibility, I suppose, is that Trump, Peter Navarro & Scott Bessent imagine they can spin this to their benefit. Roshel (which bought the plants) is a CANADIAN company. They can blame Bill Clinton. That'd make sense: he's the guy who pushed NAFTA. Doubt people want to hear it now.

I guess Mansonite Leslie is now the second most loathsome "Van Houten" in the USA. Matthew-- the Tompkins County DA who made it his life's work not to punish the 50-odd Cornell fratboys for rape (or conspiracy)-- is up for election in 2028. It needs to be everyone's mission to see him defeated.

abcnews.comTompkins County DA's office declined to review additional material on 'gang rape' case from Cornell PD, docs showThe Tompkins County DA's office declined to additional review material gathered by Cornell University police, documents reviewed by ABC News show.

There might be (not up on NY State law) a way to remove Matthew. Santa Clara County voters did it to judge Aaron Persky (who gave Brock Turner a sentence Ken Paxton would applaud) in 2018. If so, Tompkins County should pursue it. MAGA never halts their quest for punishment. D's shouldn't, either

It's hard not to notice (with ASU & Cornell both in the headlines right now) how colleges routinely let fraternities systematically molest pledges & coeds, athletics programs abuse players & academia degrade asst profs. Yet the people running these shows (all making $$$$) never face consequences.
