Suddenly an immigration lawyer. Not quite ready to give up on this place.

Oh look another data point that shows Trump won’t lift a finger for anyone not named Trump. Anyway! Back to the midterms where he’s not on the ballot.

1. Lose election 2. Assume Trump will steal election for him 3. Trump is flailing around and failing to steal his own election 4. Oh shit oh fuck

I have zero expectations of Florida but this has been very funny to watch

brent 🌹🗽@therealbrent.bsky.social

Republicans will almost certainly pass Democrats at some point in Florida but everyone said that would be today and nope. I still expect like a ~5% loss for Nixon and Jolly but it’s fun to dream a little and follow this.

Arguably anyone who accepts the pardon can’t plead the 5th in an investigation of the covered offenses. So you subpoena them, and if they don’t respond or lie, you prosecute for that. And if they do answer that becomes part of the case against everyone else.

The early voing blog is updated! Message: Don't sleep on Clark mail. I did, so I missed the late-night dump that allowed Dems to win the day. Raw ballot lead is now: D+13,000 Electorate is D+3.8 One week of in-person early voting in the books. thenevadaindependent.com/article/the-...

At this rate they should file a motion for Reed O’Connor to preemptively declare Paxton the winner just to see if he does it.

Breaking news: The Justice Department has moved to preemptively block certification of the results of Alaska’s Senate race if Republican incumbent Sen. Dan S. Sullivan loses his tight race against Democrat Mary Peltola next month.

I doubt most circuits will agree with the 5th that there’s no constitutional due process right to a bond hearing. If SCOTUS says no statutory right, there will be a mad dash to transfer detainees to Texas and Louisiana — and an equally mad dash by habeas lawyers to file in time to stop it.

Really looking forward to the inevitable Alito dissent on this one

They don't even successfully state a cause of action! They point to how National Voter Registration Act generally describes a *purpose* "to protect the integrity of the electoral process" but that's it, they don't quote any specific provision of the law implicated because there absolutely isn't one.

If any staffers wants to brainstorm amendments to the INA there’s a whole bunch of us on here you can talk to

Boo!-per Lund@cooperlund.online

Dems being in positive territory on the economy, foreign policy, and fucking immigration is crazy. There’s two more years of this! Staffers need to get to work on plans for policy on all of these issues that are ready to go in January 2029 because there’s a tremendous opportunity looming.

The only world where JD doesn’t run is one where Trump has a 4% approval rating and the GOP is looking at a nationwide wipeout. So sure, go for it.

Mark Chadbourn@chadbourn.bsky.social

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is being encouraged to consider a 2028 presidential run, CNN reports. “His advisers believe his combative, macho image could appeal to MAGA voters, particularly if JD Vance decides not to run.”

The Laken Riley Act is a terrible law, but it’s not clear to me that she would be fine but for the Act. ICE has already taken the position that they can detain people in her situation, without even bothering to cite it.

Radley Balko@radleybalko.bsky.social

Ex-boss filed a $12 theft charge against an ex-employee because she got a restraining order in response to his creepy behavior. Charge was never prosecuted, but it gave ICE an excuse to arrest and detain her. Congratulations to the 58 Democrats who voted for the Laken Riley Act. You own this.

lol what

Quite the news: Don Bolduc, the ultraconservative Republican nominee in New Hampshire Senate in 2022, has endorsed Democrat Chris Pappas. Bolduc's candidacy likely pressured then-Governor Chris Sununu to not run in 2022. Pappas now faces John Sununu. www.unionleader.com/news/politic...

Yeah we all watched twitter warp her mind in real time and it was several years after those books came out

Vibecession Forever@ghazelleberner.bsky.social

My hot take is I don't think the revisionism of HP helps anyone. Will is correct here. The fact is, the politics of the books are simply completely different from how she participates in politics now. She was radicalized and changed by social media. It happened to her, and it can happen to you too.

My recollection of her pre-trans obsession politics was that it was heavily influenced by her being a struggling single-mother before writing the books. To the extent that there’s a politics to those books it’s New Labour liberalism and a vague sort of anti-fascism. Any more is overthinking it.

Supposing, as the conspiracy argues, Ilhan Omar had been 18 years or older on the date her father became naturalized, then as an adult she could have filled out and submitted her own application for naturalization It’s not as though she’d never have been a U.S. citizen but-for the birthdate thing

Sam Vimes' Boot Salesman reposted

Not that anyone should expect better from Trump & his Goons who are taking cues from lunatics like Jack Posobiec, but their contention that Ilhan Omar would have been motivated and able to intentionally revise her age hardly makes any sense

Nobody understands US immigration law, so the conspiracy theory presupposes an extraordinary amount of legal knowledge Yet this scheme would be silly, because as the USCIS manual says, kids over 18 who don’t get automatic derivative naturalization should just apply for regular naturalization:

Sam Vimes' Boot Salesman reposted

Guys, we are well past the point where we need to preface tweets about Ilhan Omar with "If she really did something, show us the evidence." We all know she did not do something and there is no evidence.

This reads like a harebrained scheme to denaturalize her. Which will not work for a number of reasons, but someone has to please their boss.

I have been seeing a lot of people not trusting the polls in the Midwest, which is totally fair given recent history. But if all you knew were Trump's national net approval, there would be absolutely nothing weird about any of the polling in any race right now. wertwhile.substack.com/p/on-polling...

I’ve written this up here. In addition to there not being a Covid-scale drop in tourism recently, you might also be wondering why visits from Mexico seem to double around 2004-05. The answer is not a sudden shift in Mexican preferences but rather our old friend, There Was A Change In The Measure.

I keep seeing this Semafor graph that seems to show the Trump administration’s effect on international visits is comparable to the pandemic. My first thought was “that can’t be true” and indeed it is not. This is monthly data. We only have to Jun/Aug 2026. The lines are over-fitted to the months.

I have to keep saying this but it’s not just that the admin is only accepting white South Africans, but that the white South Africans plainly do not qualify as refugees under the law

Dave Levitan@davelevitan.bsky.social

Plenty going on of course but the admin deciding to accept essentially NO refugees except for thousands of white South Africans is among the most batshit racist things the US government has done in a century

New graphics from AdImpact vividly illustrate something we've emphasized repeatedly: The GOP's massive spending advantage is *not* translating into a comparable *advertising* advantage. In #TXSen, e.g., the GOP has spent 66% of all ad money but aired just 54% of all ads adimpact.com/blogs/republ...

The thing about having your immigration policy run by an actual psychopath is that you might not anticipate complications such as: immigrants having friends and families and people who care about them

this illustrates the gap—Rs are badly outspending Ds everywhere but GA, I believe, but their ad advantages are modest at best because they pay awful rates for so much of it while every Dem except for (probably) Nixon, even post-primary AES, has the money to pay for enough TV to avoid getting lost

I think he will *probably* pardon them but on the other hand, counting on Donald Trump to repay a favor has a historically rocky track record

David Roberts@volts.wtf

This is an extremely infuriating aspect of everything going on: all these guys feel free to act in lawless ways, in expectation of pardons. And Trump will in fact pardon them! It's not clear what can really be done about it.

Client order immediately released from ICE detention this morning because the government failed to respond to our habeas petition after requesting and receiving an extension to do so. I’ve heard of it happening but first time I’ve seen it in the wild.
