Day 26 of Octobeni! People seemed to really love my black Kobeni design, so I drew her as a gyaru I do think this design ended up straying too far from Kobeni's original design, so I'll keep her as an OC goin forward. Maybe her name can be Kendra or Bernie #SantanaelArt #Octobeni #ChainsawMan

They pay me to put chickens, foxes and bags of grain on the same boat. I don't question it, it's good money

We were watching the castlevania anime last night (its a rewatch for me and ivy) and after Alucard gets introduced we spent like a full ten minutes discussing the various ways Grant Danasty could also be introduced in the same scene by saying “And I’m Grant Danasty, the best of them all”

I wish I wasn’t going crazy hearing people talk about how Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse feels like the classic games or the IGAvanias or like Blasphemous and Hollow Knight. Power progression feels uneven, most secrets and exploration rewards you with EXP caches, and most routes are secretly one-way

Bosses are where they took the effort to make unique designs and patterns, and for that, I commend them. However I wish I didn't know how many bosses were in the game via the Tarot system, which gave me a clear sense of how much game I had left.

In short, this is a Castlevania game with: -very little interesting secrets -poor enemy variety -a cumbersome map to explore -loose combat with few distinct builds and I just can't call that a particularly fun time, nor can I call it a Castlevania game. I hope CV can make some new games I'd prefer

The enemy roster also stays entirely within series staples, which is disappointing. 34 enemies would be a good number for some games, but not CV. Eight of them are skeletons, and they very quickly are replaced with recolors that don't offer anything other than higher stats, and fight the same.

Which is then compounded with the low region variety, so no matter where you are, you're fighting skeletons and armors, with no contextual enemies or surprises tucked away in the corner. No flying books or evil telescopes or Wizard of Oz monsters in the library, so it all just blends together

I don't have an inherent issue with games that choose to treat their regions as levels that you go through linearly, but I would rather they be concise and not overstay their welcome. Unfortunately Belmont's Curse makes its areas too large and twisty for their own good, and going back is exhausting

Which is even worse when compounded with what is genuinely my least favorite fast travel system. Limited in its application, considered a secret to the player, requires a side quest to open up fully, and even then decides to remain unorganized. I was hoping it would sort itself out, but it never did

If they wanted a variety of weapons, they should have given them more effects and have even more of them. If they wanted to focus on the whip, they should have given it a more robust moveset you can upgrade. They chose to give me an OP whip for free and expect me to care about finding the rest.

and the map is strangely cut off from itself. Two major regions are only accessible via portal, and what little connectivity the areas have is limited to maybe two points. It's as if they didn't know how to fit the areas together in a way that felt like a castle.

I don't see it as a send-up to the genre or a love letter to the series, I see it as coloring within the lines but with garish color combinations. They talked about making it look like Castlevania and feel like Castlevania, but it doesn't, and I know the series has changed identities in the past

however, whatever identities it did have were very strong and distinct. You either have methodical platforming with committal attacks against an assortment of enemies, or a feeling of adventure as you set out and see the castle for all of its secrets. What I got instead was loose combat and stat ups

If I wanted a grapple game, I'd play Rusted Moss If I wanted a mobility gauntlet, I'd play Hollow Knight If I wanted freeform combat, I'd play Vernal Edge If I wanted parries, I'd play Nine Sols If I wanted Castlevania, I'd play the various collections As it stands, it's not excelling in any field

Parrying and contact damage is a strange dilemma to have. In my experience, Minoria's first boss wanted me to deal with both, so I'd stand too close and parry only to be hurt after her string by an "attack" with no cue. I would have preferred the latter over the former personally in BC.

I also can’t compare it to the Soulslike Metroidvanias when grappling and attacking are as free as they are. When I die, I don’t have any currency to risk to retrieve, and the only random drops you get are flasks and chicken. After a point I was just mashing my face against enemies until they died

Mobility is also a strange thing, since for the majority of the game you are using grapple points to traverse across carefully considered obstacle courses, with your extra options coming in around the 70% mark or so. It feels less like player expression and more adhering to the path set out for you.
