i am inviting anyone from a legacy media organization to explain to me why the house judiciary dems report on trump’s epstein’s ties and multiple allegations of rape isn’t worthy of extensively reporting on. i’m serious. i want to understand.

I'm prepping a lesson on the dangers of misspelling by teaching my students about COVFEFE - can you believe that was nine years ago? Dayenu. It should have been enough.

BREAKING: SCOTUS rejects Trump admin's request to allow it to end gender-affirming medical care in prisons — a significant, if tentative, rejection of one of the admin's most extreme anti-trans arguments. Only Thomas and Alito noted they would have granted the stay. More to come: www.lawdork.com

We’ll keep you posted on our efforts this week, especially the stories we hear from Palestinians on the ground. Protect the Harvest.

And, speedily and in our day, to secure human rights, safety, equality & freedom for both Palestinians and Israelis. Thankfully, our corner of today's harvest was peaceful and successful. But violence unfortunately is never far away.

To ensure that international solidarity goes beyond the harvest, to become a sustained commitment to protecting Palestinian communities from settler violence, forced displacement, and the ongoing threats to their right to remain on their land.

Our goals for the trip are to help protect the olive harvest — and to shed a light on the reality of the occupation.

The coalition is bringing people together from around the world to help Palestinian farmers harvest olives in the face of state-sanctioned settler terrorism.

Some days, I'm so grateful that my generalist job lets me pursue my academic sidequests. Today, I look at my schedule and see a couple of weeks of just Shakespeare ahead. I'm feeling so deeply thankful to be living the dream I worked so freaking hard for.

One of my favourite metrics: how many postcards do you have from students who went on exchange or saw a play at Shakespeare's Globe and needed to tell you that all of their English major dreams were coming true?

What if the metric wasn't the volume of materials you had to create when you were barely being paid, but the volume of materials you shared with graduate students and precariously-employed colleagues when you had job security, so that they didn't have to start from scratch?

The bar is in hell, but what if the metric was how many students you taught how to use the university library? What if the metric was how many of your students learned that they were entitled to a public library card?

What if the metric was how many students kept in touch with each other after a course, because they finally found a group of people on the same wavelength, or because they wanted to keep that conversation going?

What if the metric was doing everything you fucking could before you retired to ensure that there is a person to replace you and that they are given the same pay, job security, benefits, PDA, access to sabbaticals, and teaching assistance that you had?

What if the new metric is what you are doing to maintain the existence and integrity of your job, your program, your faculty? What if it's how much you stand up for the precariously-employed? What if it's how much award money you put in the way of students who didn't know it was available?

What is the metric was honest conversations with your students about the financial realities of grad school and beyond? What if the metric was building up our students' social skills when technology is destroying them?

In this deeply fascist hellscape, we can't rely on the title of "permanent" to mean anything but "until the people behind the money say stop." That said, I'm going to hold on to this job and our purpose for dear life.

As academia continues to crumble, program by program, department by department, resource by resource, we need to trash the idea that publishing research is the best measure of one's academic or personal value.

I am a prof all the time, but I am THEIR prof only some of the time. They pay for my classes as part of their tuition, but that's not the ONLY thing that their tuition is paying for, so it would be a mistake to treat it as such.

Last: this is a reminder that there's a difference between Best Practices (ideal) and Best Practices (reality). Once you have job security, stop driving yourself mad to reach that ideal. Create a new reality with boundaries.

View full thread

If my students don't feel comfortable coming to class early, asking questions in front of the class, or visiting my office hours, that's really not on me. Their tuition pays for a range of supports. My support is available during class and office hours.

It doesn't mean that I'll *never* respond to emails, it means that I want students to adjust their expectations. If they were sending Teams messages to their high school teachers, they need to know that that resource is not available to them at university.

View full thread

So, with that in mind, I'm no longer doing the "drop me an email" thing. Sure, it was best practices to be able to give infinite feedback to my entire classlist before they submitted their assignments, but that was going way above and beyond the necessity.

The necessity is this: my students see me for 3.0 credit hours a semester. I am there to answer questions in class. If they get there early, they can ask me early. If that doesn't work for them, they can ask me during my 2 hours of officially-mandated office hours a week.

Now, I frame everything around "you pay for a whole range of resources." Classes. Library. Academic Learning Centre. Mental Health services. Their tuition payments are holistic and it's *their* job to get their money's worth.

Six years ago, I was precariously employed, COVID was ravaging everyone's mental health, so "if this doesn't work for you, email me" was my common refrain. It came from a really good place. It is not sustainable.
