would Urs Schreiber quantum monadology / topological quantum compilation count? under some diagrammatic rewriting models, the diagram itself is the simulation of a kind... or perhaps some open-ended world model learner that uses ZX Diagrams for its world? arxiv.org/abs/2201.132...

arxiv.orgDifferentiating and Integrating ZX Diagrams with Applications to Quantum Machine LearningZX-calculus has proved to be a useful tool for quantum technology with a wide range of successful applications. Most of these applications are of an algebraic nature. However, other tasks that involve...

"many exceptional math students without mentors ... could be reached with modest investments" Nice to see this coming out of Stanford, building on the Education Program for Gifted Youth (EPGY) that Pat Suppes initiated at Stanford in the early 1990s

Next up: Ian Calaway on early mentors for exceptional students. This excellent conference is live streaming! 1/N www.nber.org/conferences/...

Neural networks, seen as processes, have 3 distinct properties. They are: * parametric * bidirectional * defined functorially by differentiation Using the category Poly to model them blends these distinctions. I'm still trying to decide whether that's a good or a bad thing.

Off to a terrific start: attended some terrific talks, managed to give my own (!), and saw many very interesting topics on display at the poster session. All augurs extremely well for the week to come!

I'm very excited for this workshop, starting on Monday: www.newton.ac.uk/event/ssdw04/. There look to be lots of great talks and poster titles, and many familiar names and faces in attendance, so it should be a great week. I will try (🤞🏻) to post about it as it happens.

Just out "Robustness and complexity of directed and weighted metabolic hypergraphs" (arxiv.org/abs/2310.03623). We propose a new hypergraph-based representation of metabolic networks that captures HOI among metabolites and reactions, preserving all essential information.

arxiv.orgRobustness and complexity of directed and weighted metabolic hypergraphsMetabolic networks are probably among the most challenging and important biological networks. Their study provides insight into how biological pathways work and how robust a specific organism is...

New paper about participatory disinformation around the 2020 US election, improvisation, and online influencers. Teaser: maybe you’ve read the recent articles about the multi-dimensional harassment my colleagues and I have been receiving… here’s some of the research inspiring that harassment.

New work on influencers and "participatory disinformation" in the 2020 U.S. Election. Disinformation is not just elite-driven--it's a hybrid model of elites and non-elites. From @katestarbird.bsky.social @noupside.bsky.social Matt DeButts https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/20563051231177943

PaLM 2 uses “Compute-optimal scaling”, that's how. Google had previously disclosed that “this new technique makes PaLM 2 smaller than PaLM, but more efficient with overall better performance, including faster inference, fewer parameters to serve, and a lower serving cost.”

surreal Dali-esque scene of intertwined braided parametric oscillators with chaotic patterns against a backdrop of ignored differential overlap, surrounded by giant clock gears warping and melting, a twisted play of lines and shapes, bold colors
