The Arrival of a Train at La Ciotat, 1896. Almost got hit by that goddamned train, ran out of the theater and I've never been back since.

First film you saw at the cinema. The real first one, not the pretend one you tell people! Mine: The Empire Strikes Back, 1980, Wigan. We were near the front and I can still remember how massive the AT-ATs looked, looming over us out of the snow :) Film, year, where, and whatever stuck with you.

There's already an incessant narrative about this Brewers/Rays World Series being a meeting of "underdogs" despite having their leagues' best records this year and sustained regular season success over the last decade. A good reminder that a lockout isn't about parity - it's just wage suppression.

Rays/Brewers World Series followed by a lockout talking about how small market teams can’t compete will drive me so crazy I’m making myself crazy thinking about it now

I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by madness (Buck Showalter not using Zach Britton in the 2016 AL Wild Card Game)

I understand that there's an off day coming but using cade smith for two innings yesterday in a 9-3 game and two innings (maybe) today in a 9-4 game is hazardous levels of wuss

When Soto signed a 15 year contract, I assumed it would be the *next* 15 years. Having him time travel to past seasons is pretty clever though. Add him to the ‘05 roster and an outfield with him, Carlos Beltran, and Cliff Floyd is pretty damn good.

this got me thinking, and, y'know, thanks google

I’m rooting for the outcome that makes the most pathetic field storming in college football history look even more pathetic.

BREAKING: The MAC has reversed its position and is fighting the Big Ten's extra 1 second for Michigan. "The established replay protocol requires that the game clock displayed on the program feed be used in determining whether time remained."

“Electability” is kind of a loaded phrase but to the degree that it’s something the party should consider strategically, someone who gets outspent like this and still prevails is undoubtedly the stronger candidate.

Joe Sonka 😐@joesonka.lpm.org

That Abdul El-Sayed was able to win this race despite being outspent 9:1 is mind-blowing

You suddenly get a narrator describing your life and there’s no way to turn it off - everyone can hear it. While shopping, at work, at home, with friends - the voice narrating your every move goes on. Who do you hope is the voice of this narrator?

First time I’ve seen McGarvey on one of these “lists of disappointing Democrats”. Let’s not make it a habit!

Jonathan Cohn @jonathancohn.bsky.social

The House voted on Tuesday 270 to 155 yesterday for a bill to hobble the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, exempt most bank mergers from regulatory review, and undermine consumer protections. 56 House Dems joined Republicans.

1) There is no explanation of who "they" are. Who is supposed to benefit from covering this up? 2) The "3 months" thing comes from a misreading of a section of the KY constitution about vacancies. According to that, any vacancy within the last year of a term is filled by appointment.

hammancheez but spooky@hammancheez.bsky.social

You stay in politics long enough you live to become Terri Schiavo

(On point 2, worth noting that the KY General Assembly has passed *two* different laws since 2019 trying to restrict the Gov. Beshear's ability to make an appointment for this seat. The latter, which forces a special election in this scenario, is light on details about how that is supposed to work.)

I've thought a lot about these sorts of things and I think where I've landed is that I don't really want to have an identity. I would rather people not identify me altogether. You never saw me.

Katelyn Burns@katelynburns.com

I'd be interested in some thoughts from Americans on here on an idea: Over the last 5 years, have you found yourself identifying more with your home state than the US as a whole over time?

A team from an island nation with a population smaller than Louisville came out of a group with Spain and Uruguay unscathed and just took Messi and the defending World Cup champions Argentina to the brink. What an incredible run by Cabo Verde.

That disallowed Iran goal is an example of one of my soccer pet peeves: the offside rule should be that you need to be on the other side of the last outfield player, not second-to-last defender overall. It bails out the goalkeepers when they are out of position.

Sounds like a Louisville City man. Let’s sign him up.

🇧🇷🚨 Sources: Neymar has walked away from negotiations with FC Cincinnati, frustrated by lack of progress. - Cincinnati made no official offer - Chris Albright & Jeff Berding went to Brazil in April to visit Neymar & father - Neymar felt club wasn’t serious in pursuit www.nytimes.com/athletic/739...

Losing to Trump should be much more embarrassing to these guys. They should feel a deep enough shame that they've retreated to a life out of the public eye. Any time they try to tell us how to run our party, they should be confronted with all of the ways they failed when they had their chance.

Jaime Harrison@jaimeharrison.bsky.social

I say this with no ill will or animosity: if you hate the Democratic Party, then please don’t run for our nomination. Don’t use our resources. Don’t rely on our volunteers. Don’t use our infrastructure. Don’t ask Democrats to invest their time, money, and energy in your campaign.

On top of this much more specific coincidence: • every match yesterday ended as a shut-out win for one side • the winning goal was scored before the first hydration break in each match • there was not a single goal scored in the second half

Morocco 🇲🇦 goal in the second minute and won 1-0 Paraguay 🇵🇾 goal in the second minute and won 1-0

It’s not cool to be on Bluesky. It’s definitely not cool to still be on Twitter. Facebook hasn’t been cool for years and is now mostly slop. Reddit’s whole thing is that it’s not cool. You aren’t using a social media platform to be cool - it’s just a sign of the sort of company you prefer to keep.

Snow Burrow@bostonjerry.bsky.social

I hate to be the bearer of bad news here, but I think we all know that it's not actually cool to be on Bluesky. They don't call it the Twitter retirement home for nothing.

Louisville’s whole “if you can enunciate the name of the city, you’re not really from here” schtick is surprisingly well-known given the size of the city.

Jason Kirk@jasonkirk.fyi

What is the least culturally powerful city where people do the "you're not a real [local]" thing, because New York is very very far from the only one
