Even more striking, despite not swimming, they divide and grow normally, which seems to contradict the role of flagellum motility in cytokinesis. We propose a model based on flagellum length and attachment to explain this unexpected finding. Let us know what you think, feedback is welcome!

Strikingly, flagella are too short! They incorporate tubulin too slowly and fail to elongate beyond 7 µm. Furthermore they acquire the FLAM8 maturation marker too quickly and lose the locking protein CEP164C much faster!

Great science at our symposium “Grand challenges on vector-borne diseases” @pasteur.fr last week, showing the richness, diversity and creativity of the field, with original strategies to control vector populations and transmission. Many thanks to all speakers for exceptional presentations!

Also a big thank you to Mallory Perrin-Wolf and her team for fantastic support, to Laurence Isnard Emma Lepretre for the exhibit with tsetse fly and mosquito models and to Geneviève Milon for having brought back to life Edouard Chatton’s magnificent drawings.

So, we thought that KIN2A was the major IFT carrier and yet its knockout gave little phenotype in T. brucei and L. mexicana, KIN2B being able to take over! While looking minor in abundance, KIN2B turned out to be essential for flagellum construction and KO could not be obtained in trypanosomes!

Aline tried multiple combination of IFT and kinesins but while single tagging worked, double tagging failed multiple times, possibly because of steric hindrance. Fortunately, the combination KIN2B/IFT140 worked out and gave the solution: only a handful of KIN2B shift IFT proteins to the tip

Moara Lemos went to Munich to initiate some in vitro work in the team of Zeynep Ökten, Augustine Cleetus developed this further and revealed the peculiarities of each trypanosome kinesin, which can walk on mammalian microtubules

Thanks to the heroic effort of Aline Alves, we finally revealed that KIN2A and KIN2B show different localisation and different trafficking profiles. But neither of them as sufficient to explain the actual frequency of IFT trafficking while their addition looked too abundant!

Slava Yurchenko and Kika Pašuthová produced a detailed phylogenomic analysis to find out that KIN2A and KIN2B were specific to Euglenozoa (both parasitic and free-living organisms) and that KAP was missing in all of them

I came here in 1975. I'm a Nobel Prize-winning scientist born in Germany during WWII, came here in 1975 thinking there was no way fascism could take hold in this country. I was wrong. I don't not want to be book-ended by two fascist regimes. We will stand up and set things right.

Choice words from Dr. Szostak here. And while I am no Nobel Prize-winning scientist, I identify with the same quandary as an immigrant, moving here in 2009 and (proudly) becoming a citizen in 2023. I, too, don't recognize that country anymore 😢🇺🇸🧳🛫. newsletter.ofthebrave.org/p/im-a-nobel...
