My heart is heavy. Walter Koenig, our Ensign Pavel Chekov, passed away early today. Walter and I met on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 1960s, and we stayed friends for nearly six decades. When Brad and I married in 2008, Walter stood beside us as our best man.

Shitposting aside, it cannot be overstated how much red tape Republicans added to the process of getting Medicaid and SNAP. Millions of people who literally qualify for these programs are being kicked off them, despite qualifying, because of all the red tape Grassley voted to add to them.

Unfortunately Republicans hv been even harder @ work raising costs+ making life harder for Americans They hv already increased gas prices and imposed tariffs and cut Medicaid and SNAP Grassley helped each step along the way

JUST POSTED: Today at The NYT we are publishing a major investigation into how President Trump used his executive powers to expose millions of Americans to greater cancer risks. A six month-long investigation built on more than 10,000 pages of FOIA records. Read it www.nytimes.com/2026/10/24/c...

nytimes.comHow Trump Gave the Worst Polluters a Free Pass (Gift Article)The president temporarily waived clean-air rules for industrial facilities that spew cancer-causing gases. Then his appointees worked to gut the regulations altogether.

I really recommend all people who care about hunger in American follow Katie. She's the first person I go to when I have questions and want to make sure I'm understanding things right.

About 2 million kids have lost SNAP since deep cuts were enacted last year. The ripple effects: Kids losing SNAP also lose automatic enrollment for free meals at school. And as more kids lose SNAP, their schools may be forced to drop Community Eligibility.

Surprising that the president who tried to end American democracy and stay in power even though he lost is queuing up additional ways to try to end democracy in America

Great graph here 😏

Brendan Duke@brendanvduke.bsky.social

Instead, policymakers enacted temporary tax cuts under Bush, made them permanent under Obama, enacted temporary tax cuts under Trump 1, and then made them permanent/enacted new temporary tax cuts under Trump 2. If we hadn’t cut taxes, debt would be lower and stable.

These are in my opinion the most important graphs in Brendan's new (phenomenal) paper (that you should read). The United States is a very rich nation. But those riches don't redound to our poorest citizens. We must address that.

Brendan Duke@brendanvduke.bsky.social

The U.S. is the world’s richest large country. We rank high on GDP per person, and typical U.S. HH has the 2nd highest income in world But people w/ low incomes don’t share in that prosperity—their incomes are as low or lower than people in countries less wealthy than us.

I also think this is a very powerful graph. Most people don't know it, but the US is a *very* low-tax country. We tax below average and we spend below average, among rich nations. Fixing our fiscal situation entirely through taxes would still leave us *very* low tax. bsky.app/profile/bren...

Brendan Duke@brendanvduke.bsky.social

A big reason why people w/ low incomes don’t share in our prosperity is that we underinvest in economic security programs like unemployment insurance, paid leave, housing, and other benefits. We spend FAR LESS on these programs than our peers do.

The central thesisvof Brendan's new paper: The United States has unsustainable primary deficits, but it also has an investment deficit. You shouldn't address the former by worsening the latter. The best approach is to raise additional revenue to take care of both. Read it here:

cbpp.orgFederal Policymakers Should Raise Revenue to Address Fiscal and Investment Deficits to Responsibly Steward the Nation’s EconomyOur nation faces twin deficits that threaten the short- and long-term economic well-being of the nation and its people: a federal budget deficit and a federal investment deficit.

We used to have a federal survey that measured hunger in America, but the Trump administration stopped conducting the survey right after the bill that cut food assistance was passed.

Bobby Kogan@bbkogan.bsky.social

We are seeing a hunger disaster unrolling before our eyes. Since Republicans passed the Big Beautiful Bill, 2 million kids have lost food assistance. These are by far the deepest SNAP cuts in history, and each month, we find out it’s even worse than we thought. The worst is yet to come.

In the wake of unprecedented cuts in last year's Republican reconciliation law, SNAP participation & spending have been falling — and the decline is much deeper than the Congressional Budget Office initially projected. www.cbpp.org/blog/congres...

The same people who insist on policing public bathrooms in order to protect girls from sexual predators are now calling a child rape victim, whose mother lost custody due to that abuse, a liar. loathsome

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Trump: "Ramaswamy put up a very powerful Ad about a mother saying that her daughter, Acton, is a liar, and much worse. The Press is trying to get him to 'take down the Ad.' Frankly, anybody whose mother spoke about daughter that way would normally lead to the daughter being precluded from serving"

The 'Big Beautiful Bill' transformed student loans in ways that raise costs and eliminate protections for student loan borrowers. Read my latest on this: www.americanprogress.org/article/the-...

americanprogress.orgThe Devil Is in the Details: Trump Student Loan Changes Raise Costs and Weaken Safety Net for BorrowersThe Trump administration’s wide-ranging new policies will raise costs for student loan borrowers, restrict access to graduate education, and increase racial and gender wealth gaps.

If you have student loans, your monthly bill might be about to spike—all thanks to Trump's Big Beautiful Bill.

Bookmark this for every time they say “we have no problem with legal immigration, we’re just trying to stop illegal immigration.”

The biggest difficulty for Trump and Republicans here is that the first three steps for improving people’s living conditions all involve undoing what they’ve done. 1) Undo the health care and food assistance cuts 2) End the tariffs 3) Go back in time and never start the Iran war

I really think the campaign trial is the best chance we have to explain to voters that the worst hasn't begun yet.

Last year, Trump and 98% of elected GOP enacted the biggest Medicaid cuts in history, bigger even than Reagan's Medicaid cuts. By 2034, 7.5 million people will lose their Medicaid because of the cuts. Clinics are already closing and hospitals are already cutting services, citing OBBBA as a reason.

The reason I have two different sets of numbers here is that CBO has an interaction line, and you can't break out how much of it is Medicaid/CHIP versus other things. But we know in actuality it's mostly Medicaid/CHIP, so the cut is much closer to 16% than 18%.

Genuinely I love Halloween. Pretty amazing we have a holiday dedicated to making kids happy that we've never met and will never see again (except maybe next Halloween). A true communal holiday for everyone to share in, rich or poor, not just one dedicated to giving stuff to family.

Growing up, I was five houses away from one of "those" houses. Kids came to our block from as far as 10 miles away. And they were always just as welcome, because Halloween is about making kids happy where the whole country gets into it. Something really beautiful about that.

You know,,,, it’s starting to sound like the president, who ran on and won because of a very real anger at people struggling to afford a comfortable life, then decided to pull every lever he possibly could to make the situation worse

Zachary Pleat@zpleat.bsky.social

then add in the costs of tariffs and the higher fuel prices from the war...

Still can't believe that Trump and Republicans enacted a law that made the poor poorer while making the rich richer. Taken as a whole, the Big Beautiful Bill was the biggest transfer of wealth from the poor to the rich in a single law in all of US history.

Perverting the power of the state into a tool for targeted political attacks is an assault on democracy itself. Shattering our institutions harms every Conservative American and every Liberal American.

BREAKING WSJ: The Trump admin's investigation into Rep. Ilhan Omar is aimed at building a case to strip her of her U.S. citizenship and ultimately deport her, according to U.S. officials and other people familiar with the probe.

Americans’ inflation-adjusted pay is back down to where it was when Trump took office. Legislatively, he kicked millions off their health insurance & took food assistance away from millions, including over a million kids. But the only thing he’s truly focused on is building a ballroom for himself.

Ben Casselman@bencasselman.bsky.social

Average hourly earnings, adjusted for inflation, are now essentially back to where they were when Trump returned to office. Meaning that, on average, Americans have experienced almost zero real wage growth during Trump's second term.

Impoverished children have no recourse if their food assistance gets stolen because the richest man on earth used his power and influence to kill a bill that would have helped them.

Katie Bergh@katiebergh.bsky.social

Criminals have been exploiting outdated EBT card technology to steal SNAP benefits from unsuspecting low-income families. Since December 2024, the victims of this theft have had no recourse & federal action to prevent it has largely stalled — for a deeply infuriating reason:

Really cool graph from @ernietedeschi.bsky.social on the bad site. Gen Z is the wealthiest generation in history controlling for age. Millennials are now finally wealthier than previous generations were at the same age. We are a very rich country. The problem always is bad distribution of wealth.

This is blatantly unconstitutional and an Antideficiency Act violation. Congress set the ADA penalty in 1906: 2 years in jail and/or a $5,000 fine. It would’ve taken the typical person 31,250 hours of work to pay the fine then, meaning it’s the equivalent of a $1.2 million fine today.

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Trump: My Administration will, immediately, begin sending 'Checks' of nearly $100 to over 20 MILLION wonderful Seniors to help pay for their Medicare Part B premium ... This money will come from the Medicare Improvement Fund, a pointless 'Slush Fund' that has only been used by Dumocrats ... "

No one has ever been prosecuted under the ADA in history, but the statute of limitations is five years. Unless Trump pardons everyone, I expect to see people prosecuted for the growing number of ADA violations after Trump leaves office.

#JobsDay numbers came in well below expectations (+29k jobs). Revisions reversed the narrative of a strong end-of-summer hiring boom (-60k fewer than reported). Trump's economy fails to deliver jobs for Americans as job growth slows, unemployment increases (4.2%), and inflation outpaces wages
