Torching Fed credibility in the midst of an inflationary spiral—for obvious political reasons—does not strike me as particularly wise. We see this over and over again. Attempts to appease Trump do not work but have terrible consequences. Might our elites one day learn their lesson??

CNBC@cnbc.com

The Federal Reserve is expected to leave interest rates unchanged at its upcoming October meeting — even as higher energy costs complicate the inflation outlook and put additional pressure on household budgets. Read more: cnb.cx/4iH3RR1

This is absolutely wild. In Israel, you vote for a party. The party then assigns a representative to a seat. But that representative—who did not personally run, who has no voter-constituents to whom he is answerable—is then a member of the congress and can do w/e he wants (inc. changing parties).

It's hard to mock conspiracy theorists when half of the conspiracies are true. Even QAnon turned out to be directionally correct! Our elites are so craven and operate with such impunity that absolutely nothing they say or do can be trusted.

Bolsonaro appears to have successfully subverted Brazilian democracy

Rafa Sales Ross@rafiews.com

We are watching a coup d’état attempt unfold in real time in Brazil. I’m consumed by desperation.

Tin foil thoughts: MAGA has rigged the vote in Texas. If they hadn't, they would have brought their California action there rather than in California.

But they would never lie to us!

Google was really trying to hide its water use figures, to the degree that it got the council to try to keep its water use figures secret. The community finally got the actual numbers and found out Google was using 29 percent of the water in the community. www.wired.com/story/what-t...

The resident BlueSky Republican troll is today asserting that MAGA operatives are LYING about how bad the polling is to TRICK US into being overconfident ... and that it's worked! So much fucking cope.

The resident BlueSky Republican troll is now arguing that Trump isn't wrong to claim that the US has "acquired" Greenland because the new agreement prohibits China or Russia from exploiting Greenland's minerals. Words, what do they mean?

❗️Reuters reports that if Democrats win both chambers of Congress in the November 3 midterms, they could move to approve new aid for Ukraine. Such legislation would likely have the two-thirds majorities needed to override a Trump veto. #Ukraine

A very hopeful meditation on an ambiguous and uncertain political moment. I want to believe.

Robert Reich@rbreich.bsky.social

Multiple polls show Trump’s approval at record lows, but I think what’s happening runs deeper than this. Something very dramatic is occurring. https://robertreich.substack.com/p/exposed

Another evil layer to this ad from Josh Turek: When he turns to say "stop the nonsense from both extremes," he opens with a clip of Rep. Becca Balint, the first openly gay woman to represent Vermont in congress and one of the few openly gay members of congress.

Erin Reed@erininthemorning.com

Josh Turek of Iowa, Democrat, comes out with one of the worst anti-trans ads yet. Not only is it an anti-sports ad, it proposes a ban on federal funding for gender affirming care. That would hit all medicaid and medicare patients, and any ACA federally-subsidized plans as well. Horrific.

This is a really interesting imagining of what might happen after the AI bubble bursts. Written for laypeople, with a delightfully snide tone.

This paragraph is maximally lol: recognizing both the shoddy quality of AI output as well as the ludicrousness of the "rogue AI" narrative.

The difference between Saturday at 3pm and Sunday at 3pm: indescribable. Sunday is a dark horse candidate for worst day of the week.

Bell Labs was capitalism. Bell Labs was a monopoly. The thing that is different now isn't the economic superstructure. It's us. It's society. We have embraced sociopathy as the highest social good. We have raised monsters. Look around. This is the dystopia we've all fearfully imagined.

Kevin J. Kircher@kevinjkircher.com

Bell Labs. The $1 trillion that tech monopolies have spent on AI so far could've funded ONE THOUSAND YEARS of research of the style, scale, and quality that Bell Labs once knew. An absolutely staggering opportunity cost in innovation, creativity, discovery. What might have been.

Somebody needs to revisit some literature on what leadership means. the notion that you should stay quiet in the face of moral injustice (for political expediency) and then expect folks to follow you into battle afterwards is bananas

Jake Grumbach@jakemgrumbach.bsky.social

A helpfully clear exchange here Hasan: "So your argument is that [Minnesota ICE protesters] should stay at home because immigration is a salient issue for Donald Trump. Opposing ICE is only going to help Trump. Wait until we win the election in 2028." Yglesias: "Yes that is what I would have said"

New @centeronbudget.bsky.social fiscal policy paper. The U.S. has 2 deficits: 1. A fiscal deficit 2. An investment deficit—our failure to adopt policies making folks better off. Fiscal policy should reduce both—not reduce one deficit by growing other. More revenue can do just that.

Adherents of Satan's perverted "Christian" cult supporting the Antichrist? Shocking. Just as liberals have become too feckless/timid/self-doubting to defend liberalism, so too with Christians and Christianity—they should be calling out these apostates as the demonic force they are.

I just assume the point Nicholas makes below is already clear to everyone. The regime operates out of the executive and the Supreme Court. It may want but does not need Congress (as will soon be made even clearer). "Wasting" the coup on 2026/27 never made any sense. 2028/29: absolutely.

Nicholas Grossman@nicholasgrossman.bsky.social

This will be easier to see after the midterms, but the big threat to counter is a techno-fascist coup attempt in 2028. They’ll still have the White House in 2027, and won’t pull out all the stops over losing one or even both houses of Congress, which they mostly ignore anyway. But 2028 — watch out

NEARLY 10% This is straight-up vote tampering. They can't stuff the ballot boxes but they can remove the votes they don't want.

In Mecklenburg and Forsyth counties, both Democratic strongholds, the rejection rate for mail-in ballot is as high as 7-8%, following a ruling by U.S. District Court Judge Thomas Schroeder upholding a Republican-backed rule requiring the envelope to be sealed. www.democracydocket.com/news-alerts/...

What's most amazing to me about people who insist we must play dumb about Trump's obeisance to Putin ("he just admires dictators!"): It requires us to ignore all we know about how Putin operates. And it requires us to completely memory hole Helsinki. Trump is clearly compromised. Come the fuck on.
